6 Vintage Hand Painted Colored Tiles Chaucers Canterbury Tales Packard & Ord
Up for auction is this set of six(6) 6" square ceramic tiles/ trivets. Each tile is hand painted with a character from Chaucer's'Canterbury Tales' The characters are; The Poor Parson. The Reeve, The Miller, The Monk and The Cook x 2. I have informed that these were painted by a company called Packard& Ord in the early 1950's. It would appear that they may have been used as trivets? as each has a thin cork backing. Some of the backings are in poor condition. They would be great all together in a picture setting or could be used around a fireplace set into plaster? The tiles themselves are in great condition with only one small chip to the edge of'The Reeve' and a few other tiny fleabites. 5 of the 6 have surface crazing and the makers name on the backside is'Pilkington, England' Buyer pays only actual ... moreshipping costs based on weight with no additional charges and no handling fees. Good Luck bidding! The shipping amount quoted of $30.40 is for all US destinations. I will ship worldwide so ask for shipping amount to your country. Please take a few moments to view my other listings for other interesting items. Thanks.

RARE ANTIQUE PACKARD & ORD TILED BOOKENDS - Hand painted Canterbury Tales Design
The bookends are made of 3 ceramic tiles each and have felt lining to the base and back(the core. Under the felt feels solid and is probably ceramic too) They are hand painted with vignettes of characters from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. One bookend features"The Sergeant At Law" and"The Wife Of Bath" and the other; The Reeve" and"The Franklin" the top tiles have drawings of dogs. Three of the tiles are marked with an OR hallmark which stands for Ord and Robb. The fourth tile"The Franklin" and the two triangular tiles on top with drawings of dogs, are unmarked. The bookends are very heavy. Each weighs approx. 2 ½ lb. Dimensions: the tiles are 4"x 4" and the felt back is 4" x 4 ½" I inherited the bookends from a relative of mine who lived in England and was an avid ... morecollector of antiques. I am not sure how old they are as I encountered various opinions. I was under impression that they were made in 1940's when the Packard and Ord Company reopened after the war and assumed the OR hallmark. However. I have seen photos of similar, but slightly different design(the borders of the tiles were different) bookends, with decorations also based on the characters from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, which were attributed to 1950s. I am not an expert in the field and can only relate what I have learned about those bookends since they came into my possession in 1985. Packard and Ord of Marlborough. Wiltshire, England was started in April 1936 by Sylvia Packard(1881-1962) and Rosalind Ord(1907-1998) The two ladies were art teachers at the Royal School of Art for Daughters of Officers at Bath and at first were decorating tiles to order. In 1936 the business has increased to such an extent that they purchased their own kiln. They still used blanks produced by other tile companies(such as Carter or Thynne or H&R Johnson) but they glazed and fired the hand painted tiles at the premises in Marlborough. The tiles were marked with a hallmark PO. After
