Antique English Wedgewood Colbolt Blue 1850s Fireplace Tile Plaque Cherub Scene
Amazing intact Fireplace Mantel/ Tile with a wood frame- black fabric backing. Size is 3 by 14 inches. Most likely this was part of a four or five piece scene that ran a top a fireplace or other border. Estimated 1850's Wedgewood. Note the details on what may be a funeral scene with the Cherubs carrying flower covered urn. The condition on this is excellent- meaning no nicks. Chips or flea bites- absolutely beautiful rare piece. Tile was removed from wood frame- no markings found- most likely this piece is a partial tile from the larger set/ scene.

An extremely rare delft SEA MONSTER TILE, possibly English, circa 1640
Antique pottery in good taste– harmic.little A very rare. Excellent condition delft/ tinglaze/ faience'sea monster' tile painted in inky blue with'ox-head' corners and depicting a marine creature with the head of a man and the tail of a fish; possibly London. Pickleherring Quay or Rotherhithe, circa1640. This beautifully painted tile is in remarkable condition for its age(see the photograph accompanying this description) It measures approximately 5 inches square by 3/8 inches thick. It has no significant chips or cracks and no restoration. There is an all-over surface craquelure which is normal for tiles of this date. Tiles of this type represent a crossroads between the scientific mapping of the seas and old folklore myths which saw the oceans populated by all sorts of fantastical creatures like the'merman' portrayed ... morehere. I'd guess the tile decorator copied the image directly from a book of illustrations of mythical marine creatures. What is particularly interesting about this tile is the presence of just two nail-holes on the front of the tile. In diagonally opposite corners(see photo) These appear to be large and oval/ square in shape, a feature that closely resembles some of the tile fragments excavated from the Pickleherring Quay and Rotherhithe factories in London and which date to the 1620-40 period. Also of interest is the similarity in style of the painting of the merman's head. Which resembles the'angel' heads on seventeenth century English drug jars from London. The corners are slightly unusual variants on the'ox-head' or more accurately, ox-horn' types which were used in Holland and England in the early seventeenth century. ANTIQUE MINTON TILE FROM THE UK Up for auction is an Art Nouveau tile from Minton(Stoke on Trent) made c. 1890-1910. It is a 6 inch square with a brown Greek key border and a lovely green-turquoise center with flowing flowers and vines. It is marked"Mintons. Stoke on Trent. Mintons was the original name of the company which later shortened it to just"Minton. The tile is in excellent condition. It does have some flea bites around the edges.
