They are printed on paper that is not acid free and in most cases have not been stored in the best way. So the maps you are buying will be in a condition that reflects both of these facts. The map you get may be worn or lightly torn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders of the maps may also have small tears. On occasion maps may smell musty from the way they have been stored in the past. OWhen the map is kept in an open area the musty smell will fade away in time. The North West and Michigan Territories' The image below shows an enlarged cross section from the centre of the map to show the level of printed detail: The map was originally engraved in 1833(this date is printed on the map) and it depicts the area shown as at that date. Although this edition was published in 1844. The map names"Michigan Territory" as it existed prior to 1837 when it was admitted to the Union as the state of Michigan. West of Lake Michigan, what is now the US state of Wisconsin is named as"Huron or North West Territory" This area became a territorial possession of the United States in 1783 after the American Revolutionary War. However, the British remained in control until after the War of 1812, which finally established an American presence in the area. An influx of miners into the area led to tension with American Indian tribes. This resulted in the Winnebago War of 1827 and the Black Hawk War of 1832 which led to the forced removal of American Indians from most parts of the state. Following these conflicts, Wisconsin Territory was organized in 1836. Continued white settlement led to statehood in 1848. Indian settlements, villages and tribes existing in 1833 are marked on the map as tipi(teepee) symbols, along with some mines and mineral deposits. The Indian boundary concluded in the second and third Treaties of Prairie du Chien of 1829, in which Native American Tribes ceded land in present day Wisconsin and Illinois, is marked on the map as the"Indian Boundary of 1829" Also marked on the map in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan is the"Indian Boundary" resulting from the 1821 Treaty of Chicago and the 1819 Treaty of Saginaw. With decorative piano-key border, printed more than 159 years ago. The coverage area extends from Lake Erie to Iowa. North to Michillimackinac in Michigan's upper peninsula. Wisconsin had been admitted to the Union just five years before this map was published, and the area norrth of Prairie du Sac and Lake Winnebago was still unsettled. The map locates a couple of mills and a trading post along the Wisconsin River, with the notation that lands along both sides of the river were"attached to Portage County. There are two short railroad lines running west from Chicago. And a railroad crosses southern Michigan, through Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo. the map locates forts, Indian villages, ... moreancient mounds, iron mines, and a network of wagon trails and wilderness roads. Original, steel-engraved map of the Parts of Wisconsin and Michigan, North America Sheet V, by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge(SDUK) published as part of the Family Atlas in 1875, in London, by Edward Stanford. This is an updated version of the original 1833 map, reflecting population growth and administrative changes, but using the same plates, which were purchased by Stanford the decade before. The SDUK began its map publishing project under the leadership of Captain Francis Beaufort R.N. in 1829, and published the maps in parts, haltingly, over the next 15 years, completing the series in 1844, finally permitting the publication of a whole atlas. Many of the maps were actually drawn by Beaufort, who at the time was the Hydrographer to the Royal Navy, and all were closely supervised by him. J. C. The second largest of the five Great Lakes, and the only one that lies entirely within the United States. This pair of maps, centered on Lake Michigan, cover the surrounding region including the states of Michigan and Wisconsin. The first map, issued in 1833, covers the Huron or Northwest Territory(modern day Wisconsin) and the Michigan Territory(modern day Michigan) along with parts of northern Illinois. The map depicts territories and counties in outline color. Lake Michigan is presented to be is slightly malformed ... moreand distended on the vertical axis. The map names several Indian tribes, including the Ottawas and the Chippeways. The Bad Axe River is also identified. It was near the mouth of the Bad Axe River that the Bad Axe Massacre or the Battle of Bad Axe was fought at the end of the Black Hawk War in 1832, a year before this map was issued. The Black Hawk War was a battle fought between the United States state militia and the Native American tribes Sauk and Fox. The leader of the Native American tribes was a Sauk warrior Black Hawk, who hoped to resettle on the land that was ceded to the United States in a disputed 1804 treaty. The Bad Axe Massacre took place as an aftermath to the Battle of Wisconsin. In this historic last stand, a mere 60 Sauk warriors held off over 700 U.S. regulars and militia under the command of Henry Dodge while the Indian women and children crossed the river to safety. At dawn the Sauk chief Neapope, concealed in a tree, verbally offered to negotiate surrender. The U.S. soldiers, lacking an interpreter, ignored his plea. Description: This is a scarce and important map issued by the S.D.U.K. in 1833 depicting Lake Michigan. The second largest of the five Great Lakes, and the only one that lies entirely within the United States. Centered on Lake Michigan, it covers the surrounding region including the states of Michigan and Wisconsin. The map covers the Huron or Northwest Territory(modern day Wisconsin) and the Michigan Territory(modern day Michigan) along with parts of northern Illinois. The map depicts territories and counties in outline color. Lake Michigan is slightly malformed and distended on the vertical axis. The map names several Indian tribes, including the Ottawa ... moreand the Chippeway. The Bad Axe River is also identified. It was near the mouth of the Bad Axe River that the Bad Axe Massacre or the Battle of Bad Axe was fought at the end of the Black Hawk War in 1832, one year before this map was issued. The Black Hawk War was a battle fought between the United States state militia and the Native American tribes Sauk and Fox. The leader of the Native American tribes was a Sauk warrior Black Hawk, who hoped to resettle on the land that was ceded to the United States in a disputed 1804 treaty. The Bad Axe Massacre took place as an aftermath to the Battle of Wisconsin. In this historic last stand, a mere 60 Sauk warriors held off over 700 U.S. regulars and militia under the command of Henry Dodge while the Indian women and children crossed the river to safety. At dawn the Sauk chief Neapope, concealed in a tree, verbally offered to negotiate surrender. The U.S. soldiers, lacking an interpreter, ignored his plea. Fleeing the aftermath of the Battle of Wisconsin Heights the remaining Sauk, mostly women and children, were cornered near the mouth of Bad Axe River and slaughtered. You are bidding on a very nice. Authetic 19th Century antique map, entitled: Map of Michigan, Wisconsin and Part of Iowa. It is dated 1844, and was drawn& engraved by Sherman& Smith, NY, and published by D.F. Robinson, CT. There is a subtitle indicating that it was: To Illustrate Olney's School Geography. This is a nicely engraved and hand( colored map, showing the population of Wisconsin as 30,900; Michigan as 212,000; and Iowa as 43,000. The outer dimesions of the paper are 12 1/4" by 9 5/8; the map is encased loosely in a protective plastic pouch, but you could easily remove it for framing purposes. I believe that the map is nice condtion, considering the fact that it is 170 years old, with some toning and pencil scribble marks on the reverse of the map which are not visible from the front. You are bidding on a great original antique map of"Lake Superior and the Northern Part of Michigan. As you can see from the markings on the right. This map was published by J.H. Colton, NY in 1855. The map also includes portions of northern Wisconsin as well as Lake Michigan, including Mackinac Island. The outer dimensions of the page measure approximately 13 7/8" by 17. The back side of the map is entitled"The State of Illinois" and sets forth detailed information about all aspects of that state as of the 1855, including the census data for all of Illinois as of 1850, which was 851,470! I am not a map expert, but it appears to be in nice shape for its age- 159 years old- though it does have some toning, minor soiling, and a few small tears in the outer edge of the paper that do not extend to the map itself. That being ... moresaid. This is still a nicely engraved and hand? colored map, which would look great on the walls of your home or vacation home. At present, the map is encased in, but not affixed to a protective plastic sleeve, though it could easily be removed for framing. Thick paper. Double continuous seam(tipped in) sheet, about 21.5" x 14" with margins. Actual map in the border of 18.25" x 12.375" Pastel matte finish. This was sourced from a period atlas with an 1896 copyright date. One back page is a one page map of Illinois with Chicago inset. The other back page is Indiana. Railroad routes are marked in black with the operator. Typical margin toning. The WI/IL map has a slight vertical crease about 1/2 up from the bottom. No big deal. Regional Map of the North Central United States. This is a authentic regional map of the North Central States. Protrusions appear beyond the boundary. The map delineates large and small mountain ranges. Mountain peaks, rivers, creeks, lakes, cities, towns and upon close examination what appears to be railroad lines. Carefully removed from an 1878 atlas with mild age toning and a few handling smudges along the edges and made from a wax engraving plate using a map printing process called cerography. They are a fascinating historical artifact of the popular engraving process ... moreemployed by newspapers at the time of the Civil War? During the war, newspaper publishers needed a method where they could get the illustrations produced by newspaper artists in the battlefield to the American public as quickly as possible. To do this. The illustration was divided into sections usually two inches square. Double page prints were divided into as many as 40 sections. The section was traced onto a wood block. Engravers cut into the wood with various tools creating a mirror image of their section of the illustration. The blocks were then screwed together, recreating the original illustration. This would then be inked and stamped onto the newsprint. The lines on the image above are a result of where the blocks of wood were joined together. Will my antique print deteriorate? Before 1870. Newspapers were not made from wood pulp as they are today. Instead, they were printed on a sturdy paper made by pulping linen rags. These rags came from clothing and ship sails. Because this kind of paper contains very little acid, your antique print could easily retain its appearance for many years into the future, if handled properly.
