ANTIQUE MAP 1855 J.H. COLTON LAKE SUPERIOR UPPER MICHIGAN + N. WISCONSIN
You are bidding on a great original antique map of"Lake Superior and the Northern Part of Michigan. As you can see from the markings on the right. This map was published by J.H. Colton, NY in 1855. The map also includes portions of northern Wisconsin as well as Lake Michigan, including Mackinac Island. The outer dimensions of the page measure approximately 13 7/8" by 17. The back side of the map is entitled"The State of Illinois" and sets forth detailed information about all aspects of that state as of the 1855, including the census data for all of Illinois as of 1850, which was 851,470! I am not a map expert, but it appears to be in nice shape for its age- 159 years old- though it does have some toning, minor soiling, and a few small tears in the outer edge of the paper that do not extend to the map itself. That being ... moresaid. This is still a nicely engraved and hand? colored map, which would look great on the walls of your home or vacation home. At present, the map is encased in, but not affixed to a protective plastic sleeve, though it could easily be removed for framing. I am leaving it in the sleeve for shipping purposes, and thus, will not be rolling it. LARGE ORIGINAL 1857 WISCONSIN MAP FROM COLTON US ATLAS HAND COLORED
Antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements alongside the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed, but most of the atlas remains. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of the page is an impressive 18.5" x 16" The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the time of publication 157 years ago. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around ... morethe edges, otherwise the map is very clean. There are a few light shadows lettering from the advertisement that was on its opposite page at one time, barely visible. The reverse side is blank. See the image for condition details. But frankly, the image really doesn't do it any justice. We are/will be offering many of these maps on eBay. As well as some of the better advertisements. They will all be offered at low opening bids with no reserves. These are all genuine items, not cheesy reproductions or reprints. Please visit our other listings to view them. 1855 Color Township Map of Wisconsin This scarce color township map of Wisconsin by J.H. Colton is dated 1855 and comes from the Colton Atlas. Plate No. 48. Counties are color tinted in pink, blue and yellow with township grids and numbered north-south, east-west axis lines to identify township numbers. It features a black and white inset of the Milwaukee area townships in the lower left. Good detail on lakes and waterways, towns and geographic features. Map measures 15-1/2" x 18-1/2" with a 1-1/4" border and is printed on moderately heavy stock. Not thin paper. The mortice is about 3/4" wide. Condition is very good. The image area of the map is clean and clear with no marks. Tears or other damage. The border is age toned, and there are a few small chips on the edges of the paper. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed, being sold as a single elephant size folio sheet as shown in the main pic. Overall, a beautiful rare map with nice color that would frame up nicely. Size: The map image measures approximately 12 1/2 by 15 1/2 inches(32x39cm) on a 15 1/2 by 18 1/2" 37x44cm) page with a margin all around for framing as seen in the pic. Condition: The map ... moreis in Very Good condition for its age with overall light tonal aging and original hand coloring as issued. There are a few spots as seen.
