1842 letter from William and Anna Ferris to their father Benjamin Ferris in Wilmington Delaware. William says that his father is not answering his letters. Benjamin Ferris was a well known watchmaker. Historian and Wilmington Quaker. Another great piece of Delaware history. Benjamin Ferris(August 7. 1780- November 9, 1867) was a watchmaker and historian from Wilmington. Delaware. Ferris was born the sixth of seven children to Ziba Ferris(1743–1794) and Edith Sharpless(1742–1815) in a house on the northeast corner of Third and Shipley Streets in Wilmington. He was a descendant of Samuel Ferris. Who had come from Reading. England. In 1682 to settle at Groton. Massachusetts. And of John Ferris, who was among the first settlers in the city of Wilmington in 1748. Ferris moved to Philadelphia at age 14. Where he learned the watchmaking business. ... moreHe was married to Fanny Canby(1778–1833) in Wilmington's Monthly Meeting Cemetery on May 17, 1804. They returned to live in Wilmington in 1813, where he was appointed city surveyor in 1820. As a member of the Religious Society of Friends. Ferris was a proponent of the views of Elias Hicks. Claiming"obedience to the light within" as sufficient for salvation, and publishing a debate with an evangelical minister which contributed to a schism in 1827. 1] In 1839. Ferris was appointed to a committee of the Yearly Meetings of Friends of New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore, to investigate wrongdoings against the Seneca Indians. An extremely delightful piece of Bayou State currency. 170 plus years of living history in one exciting bank note. Might have graded higher but for tiny edge tear. A fantastic opportunity. From the latter part of the 1700’s through the early 1870’s obsolete currency(often referred to as Broken Bank Notes) came from many sources. I.e. States, Counties, Municipalities, Military, Banks, Corporations, and Private Merchants just to mention a few. Most people don’t realize that before the U.S. Government started regulating the banking industry in 1861, the aforementioned had their own money printed and thus provided collectors with lots of different themes and varieties. There are many choices and collectors can focus on their preferred notes. You can collect notes with a certain vignette(picture or scene) a particular State, city, or bank. Some ... morepeople collect notes with bridges, signatures, cattle, horses, whales, ships, etc, and yes, even Santa Claus! Many obsolete bank notes are absolutely beautiful in artistic design and coloring. Depending on the grade(condition) many of these types notes are fairly inexpensive and readily available. Every paper money collector should have at least one piece of obsolete currency in his/her collection! There are many different references for individual states currency and they can be found online from various publishers and book dealers. For Southern States currency, I highly recommend“Southern States Currency” by Hugh Shull, published by Whitman Publishing Company.

1842 large cent with the "VOTE THE LAND / FREE" counterstamp.
Listed in the main section of the Brunk reference as V-110.the"VOTE THE LAND/ FREE" counterstamp on an 1842 large cent. The phrase"VOTE THE LAND FREE" was stamped on many U.S. coins in the mid 1840s. It was the slogan of the National Reform Association. Which was formed in 1844 by George Henry Evans in New York City to lobby Congress for free homesteads in the West. The NRA hoped to attract recognition by marking the coins. Ellis Smalley was a blacksmith. Political activist and a delegate from Plainfield, NJ to the first NRA convention held in October, 1845. He was elected Secretary of the National Reform Association at the convention. It was the die created by Ellis Smalley that was used to stamp the coins. In 1848. The NRA was absorbed into other political movements like the Free Soil Party and the Abolitionists. The ... moreefforts of the NRA helped lead to the Homestead Act of 1862. By 1878 Ellis Smalley had moved to Council Grove. Kansas where he became a member of the City Council. The 1842-O is much easier to obtain than the first-year 1841-O. The'42-O, however, is still an elusive coin, ranking fourth in overall rarity among the 21 O-mint issues in the No Motto Liberty Eagle series. Only 175-225 coins have survived from an original mintage of 27,400 pieces, the vast majority of which grade VF or EF. In high grades(AU and Mint State) the 1842-O is rarer than such other No Motto Eagles as the 1843-O, 1844-O, 1845-O, 1847-O, 1854-O Small Date and 1854-O Large Date. By 1838. Congress had reduced the weight and fineness of the Eagle to 16.718 grams and.900 gold, respectively. These reductions were deemed sufficient ... moreto discourage the widespread hoarding and exportation that led to the denomination's suspension in 1804, and Mint Director Robert Maskell Patterson received orders to resume coinage in July 1838. E. Challinor Red & White Transfer Plate Corinthia 8 3/4" Staffordshire 1842-67
Up for bids is an antique Staffordshire Plate in Red and White Transferware. The Plate is made by E. Challinor and is in the Corinthia Pattern. The Plate is 8 3/4" in diameter. It has no chips or cracks. It does have crazing which is consistent with it's age. The Plate dates between 1842-1867 which is when the Edward Challinor Company was in operation in Tunstall. Staffordshire, England. There is a tiny blue dot on the surface of the plate which is probably from when it was fired and there is one pinhead size spot where the glaze is missing on one of the scenes around the border but this is hard to see you can just feel it with your fingertip. It is a wonderful display plate with its red and white or pink and white colour and idyllic country setting scenes. I have explained this item to the best of my ability. Antique 19th Century Miniature Bisque Porcelain Creamer Cream Pitcher - c.1842
This is a diminutive cream pitcher or creamer done in white bisque porcelain with a collar depicting wheat stalks. Berries and leaves, all done in relief. The bottom is decorated with a ribbed pattern and the handle has a gentle twist. The bottom has a British Registration porcelain pad indicating the pattern was registered between 1842-1867. Approximate measurements are 2.75" tall by 2.25" wide. It's possible this was part of a Victorian child's tea set. There is one very tiny flea bite on the spout and some manufacturing black specks and roughness on the spout. Despite being up to 150 years old. It is in outstanding condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or repairs and no damage to the elaborate relief design. A beautiful little pitcher. The chamberstick has a removable bobeche or wax drip. For ease of cleaning. The handle is done in an attractive scrolled design, with a widened top to provide a thumbpiece. There is a hole to hold a snuffer, but we unfortunately do not have this piece. The underplate is densely monogrammed with'NBTA' in overlayed letters. This is a very well-made piece of antique English silver, and would make an excellent addition to any silver collection. This piece is in great overall condition. Unfortunately we do not have the snuffer to this piece. There are no splits. No monogram removals, and no repairs. This piece is hallmarked on the underside with the lion passant for sterling ... moresilver.
