This is an attractive first edition example of the 1855 public survey map of a part of the Washington Territory prepared by James Tilton. Surveyor General of Washington Territory. The first Surveyor General's map of the Washington Territory, this map covers the region from the Pacific Ocean to the western foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Most of the significant survey work is limited to the lands to the east of the Cascade Mountains, with the state of the land survey noted via a series of blocks representing the survey grid. This map covers peninsular Florida from, roughly, Merritt Island and the modern day Chassahowitzka Wildlife Refuge south as far as the Everglades and the Florida Keys. Though there are no labels, the map offers some interesting topographical details regarding the rivers and swamps throughout the region. The state of the Land Survey is also noted via a series of blocks, mostly confined to the upper quadrants and the eastern seaboard, representing the survey grid. Wheat(1085) considered this an important map, a highly polished work, marking the General Land office maps of the previous two years look crude by comparison. One reason for the advance is that to a considerable extent the map is a redrawing of the Ebet-gilpin map of the previous year. It is not, however, a slavish copy, a number of the place names being differently rendered; the upper Colorado River, called'Bunkara' by Ebert and Gilpin, is'Grand or Bungarara River' here; Roan or Book Mountains' become'Book Mountains' and to the many'parks' named by Ebert and Gilpin is added'Old Park, on the headwaters of the White River west of North Park. That was probably a mistake; the name'Old Park' had originally been applied by the mountain men to South Park. A great many new towns have been added, among them'Laporte, which net year became Fort Collins. Description: An attractive and uncommon map of California and parts of Nevada issued by the Surveyor General in 1863. The map covers all of California as well as the western parts of Nevada near Lake Tahoe and Carson City. Remarkably. A list of 438'Private Grants Finally Surveyed' appearing in the lower left quadrant numerically identifies corresponding colored zones on the map proper. These refer to Spanish-Mexican land grants throughout California of which this is most likely to be the earliest map to specifically detail. The present map is intended by the U.S. Government to certify and formally recognize these grants, including lands granted to ... morethe Church around the various missions as well as private grants. Other surveyed lands are highlighted in orange while unsurveyed lands are left uncolored. The massive Tulare Lake is noted, once the largest freshwater lake in North America, practically a sea, which has since been drained for irrigation purposes. Throughout topography is rendered in hachure. The Land Office Survey Department issued this map in 11 editions from 1854 to 1864, this being the 10 and thus one of the most advanced, issues. Compiled by E.F. Beale, Surveyor General, and engraved and lithographed by Jospeh Bien of 24 Vesey Street, New York. Size: Printed area measures inches high by inches wide. Condition: Very good. It covers the region from the Pacific Ocean to Boise and from the Columbia River to the California state boundary. The map was prepared to illustrate the progress of the land survey work in Oregon. Noted via a series of blocks representing the survey grid. An explanation along the top border describes the various markings in the blocks. The map notes several important towns, cities, mountain ranges, including the Cascades and the Blue Mountains, with relief shown by hachures. It also identifies Indian reservations and villages, as well as several trails, including the Applegate Trail, the Proposed Emigrant Trail, Trail to Powder River and Fremont's ... moreTrail, among others. 1866 Public Land Survey Map showing progress in surveying the nation. Under the Land Office direction of Joseph S. Wilson, Theodore Franks, draughtsman, Department of the Interior, approved Oct. 2, 1866, 30" x 58" Map was obviously extracted from a hard bound Interior report. Many folds and some few fold cracks, foxing and some discoloration at some folds. In all, worthy of our best conservation efforts. The public land surveys began in Ohio. Seven different methods were utilized until the range and township method was finally adopted and used throughout the rest of the post Colonial nation. We can thank two old Virginia surveyors named Washington and Jefferson for perfecting the last system. Mineral deposits are indicated by a graphic key, especially in the West. From the inventory of the manufacturer when they closed for business in 1996. Made by the D. Ballauf Manufacturing Company of Washington DC. Normally these survey markers or or bench marks have a long tube or other protrusion to anchor them in concrete. Out of each lot the company used one to test the strength of the joint to the tube. Snapping the brazing joint in the process. This is one of these and thus has no tube on the back. This marker was never sold to the client!
