They are printed on paper that is not acid free and in most cases have not been stored in the best way. So the maps you are buying may be in a condition that reflects both of these facts. The map you get may be worn or lightly torn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders of the maps may also have small tears. On occasion maps may smell musty from the way they have been stored in the past. When the map is kept in an open area the musty smell will fade away in time. It is a fairly scarce map in a large elephant folio format that is very detailed for the period rivaling the more common Johnson atlas of the period in terms of detail, size and color. Size: The dimensions of the map area between the neat lines measures 16 by 22 inches(41x56cm) on a page measuring 17 1/2 by 24 1/4" 44x62cm) with a margin all around as seen in the main pic. Condition: The map is in Fair condition with overall tonal ageing. Original hand coloring, blank on the reverse, printed on a heavy page. There is some darkening and dampstaining in the margins, a chipped bottom corner, inch separation at the bottom of the centerfold and a few minor spots as seen in the pics, see the pic for more on condition. This is an 1871 engraved map of Ohio. Indiana, Illinois& Kentucky. It measures 12.5 X 17 inches. Published by T. Edward Zell. Philadelphia. Map was engraved by J. Bartholomew. For history of the famous Bartholomew maps, see last paragraph below. We are unable to find many of these maps in the major dealers sites. The ones we did find had prices of $200- $500 and up and were not in as good a condition as this map. Be my guest. Go look for yourself. Paper shows minor age spots. Normal on most maps this age due to paper content. We have shown in the scans of the map and close ups to get a great idea of the beauty of the gentle hand coloring and detailed engraving. Scale is one inch equals 8 miles. For those who don't know. There were no cars, and hardly any roads, just ruts, and they weren't exact. This was the first detailed map of such routes, including Rail Roads. As you may have seen in the other maps I have available, there were much uncertainty of detail in America, especially in the West. This, and the trouble with supply lines for the military, made a great need for a system of detailed maps that showed such routes, and who better to have these maps made then the US Post Office Department. Basically this is an one of the first road maps for US states. The map is completely unattached from top trim molding. With significant tearing in the top left hand corner, with one"6in by 10in" size piece being completely torn from the rest of the map. Map has been lined with linen, and varnish, which was a common practice those days. The map appears yellowed or toned, and the bottom dowel with finials wants to roll up. The page measures: 11 1/8" x 9 1/4" The actual image measures: 9 5/8" wide& 7 1/2" This map shows the states of Ohio.Indiana, and top part of Kentucky. The map is still fairly clean.
