I also have some in the same pattern that are more distinct) These tiles have a hole in the center. A screw was inserted through the hole to attach the tiles to the metal stove. They are square. Measuring 2-3/8" square X 9/16" thick. These are old and were removed from the stove so have slight imperfections from their intended use. They will make a beautiful backsplash or trivet. They could also be mounted in a custom frame with knobs attached through the screw holes to make a nice jewelry or hand towel rack. Antiques. Collectables, Paintings, Fine Ceramics and Glass 3 FRAMED 18 TH. CENTURY DUTCH DELFT MANGANESE TILES These three Dutch. Delft, manganese tiles are dated to around 1750. They make a superb set mounted in their frame. The ground is cream and design is in purplish brown colour. The scenes on the tiles are of the canal with windmill. Boats and farm or church with small designs in the corners. They are uniquely hand painted in this wonderfully naive style. The condition of all 3 tiles is particularly good for this age. There are a few frits and nibbles to the edge. Some crazing and the tile on the right is slightly brown on the top, this may be the result of old tobacco smoke. Each tile measures 13cm x 13 cm x 7mm(approximately) or 5¼ inches x 5¼ inches. The wooden frame measures just more than 17½ inches x 7½ inches. ... moreI have added more pictures to show the condition and thickness of the tiles out of the frame. I'm afraid the colour looks varied as I was having problems with my camera. Manganese is a mineral used since Egyptian times to stain glazes and bodies. The colour varies depending on the glaze. Lead glazes give a purplish brown colour. As with these tiles. Manganese mixed with iron in an alkaline glaze creates a rich black tone. Delftware tiles were very popular. Popular decorative motifs included landscapes and flowers. With smaller designs in each corner. In Britain early delftware copied the Dutch manganese palette. MidCentury Hand-Painted Delft Blue Windmill & Harvest Dutch Holland Ceramic Tile
5.25" by 5.25" size square tile of 1/4" thickness. It dates back to middle 20th century. The original hook was removed from the back of the tile. This can be used as a wall decoration. Trivet or in a mosaic. There is a chip on the back the corner of the tile. Which does not affect the front of the tile(as shown in photo#4) The photo is quite enlarged- kind of like viewing the tile under a microscope. It was manufactured by the factory of George Gilliot in Hemiksen/ Antwerp. Belgium, but decorated by hand in Holland. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE The factory was founded in 1897 by George Gilliot in Hemiksem. As floor and wall tile factory, with John Salt, a ceramic specialist trained at Sèvres, as technical director. At the turn of the 20th century, the firm saw rapid expansion with a working force reaching nine hundred personnel in 1913. The last tiles were produced there in 1978 and the company was closed down by Sphinx Maastricht in 1985( the information is taken from the website of the British Museum in London) The tile ... moreshows a man/ peasant carrying a large sac on his back. Nicely glazed surface. Fine. Light colored clay with no mica(sparkling inclusions) No crazing. The tile is stamped with the factory's insignia: a capital H within a circle and the writing MADE IN BELGIUM(hard to see in the photos) There are 5 more impressed circles with a grid pattern within. 1 circle with the numbers 538 and S4F within and one more circle with the letters FF. The letters FF stand for the date of manufacture. Ie. 1966. It originally had a triangular hook for suspension. On the whole. It is in a remarkably good pre-owned condition! I can see no damage to the tile. We have a total of 4 tiles in this design. With no apparent damage. They may need a little cleaning. Three tiles have traces of a blue stamp that originally said: Handpainted. Made in Holland Please study the photos carefully before bidding. Because they are part of the description. This is a rather rare lot of 5 unique and old manganses Delft tiles featuring a nautical(ships) scene on each. Three tiles are framed and two are in very good condition. The remaining three have hairline cracks and crazing. Even so. It is hard to find these old tiles without missing pieces. Each measures 5 1/8” square and are about 1/4" thick. As you can see, all have been previously used and were salvaged. We purchased this lot approx 30 years ago at a antique shop in Europe and they have been in our smoke free home ever since. 20th c. Dutch Delft Blue tile, floral / flower and 2 butterflies, pre 1974

We present an original Delft Blue tile from Holland. The motif is floral. Notice the two insects. Or butterflies to the right and left of the flower. Nicely glazed surface(it needs a little cleaning) The background is off white with a bluish tint(stronger than in the photo) The clay is coarse and porous with a lot of mica(sparkling inclusions) No crazing. A couple of minute flea bites at the edges(prior to firing) and a larger flake at the lower left corner. On the whole. It is in a remarkably good pre-owned condition! There are no breakages. Or cracks that run through the fired clay. The tile is not stamped. But it bears a striking resemblance to two tiles by Tichelaar Makkum, that are ... morelisted separately. It dates prior to 1974. Please study the photos carefully before bidding. Because they are part of the description. It came from a Massachusetts home. It belongs to a large collection of Dutch tiles.
