MAGNIFICENT MAJOLICA GLAZE GODWIN `FLOWERS WITH SNAIL` 8 INCH TILE
This superb tile was made by William Godwin. Lugwardine, Hereford around 1900. It has a heavily moulded pattern of leaves and flowers with a snail at the bottom. The whole pattern is coloured with strong majolica glazes. The tile is 8 inches square and is very heavy. The back of the tile is shown in picture#2. It is in good condition apart from a little rubbing to a couple of high points in the pattern although this does not affect the appearance on the tile. The rectangular tile has a olive green majolica glaze. With a hint of caramel in the background. The beautiful tile has a unique design and truly a piece of art. It is not marked. Size: 6"w X 3 1/16"d X 3/8"h approx. dimensions Quantity: 1- Tile Condition: VERY GOOD- it is a reclaimed tile so it shows light wear. There is light crazing over the tile. Antique Decorative Arts Providential Tile Works Majolica Trenton NJ Floral Blue
Up for auction is a vintage antique Provincial Tile(PT) Works wedgewood blue Majolica architectural tile recently found at auction in the suburban Philadelphia PA area. It is found in good used condition with the only condition of heavy crazing under the glaze. Very typical of these tiles of this age and one small chip to one corner, number 4. This measures 3" sq by 1/2" thick. There are very minor knicks to the back as well as a build up of the old glue on the back and plasters on the side. A great repurposed trivet or a great wall hanging. The design# is on the back, we cannot make it out but believe is to be F276, but not positive, difficult to make out and too hard to photograph. This 6" square majolica art tile is probably English in origin. It is not signed. This lovely tile bears an Art Nouveau design of organic florals and was probably manufactured circa 1900. The background color of this tile is a soft ivory and the stylized poppies are a deep rose and the foliage is a soft medium green. This tile is in very good condition for its age. There is crackling to the glaze. There is also some chipping to the back of the tile. On the bottom edges, but this chipping does not carry over onto the front and certainly does not detract from the beauty of this tile. American Encaustic Tiling Co - Limited 6 x 6 High Relief Majolica Tile
Between the years of 1879 and 1936. The American Encaustic Tiling Company Limited produced tiles with mosaic, comedic, nature, wildlife and human subject matter. Many of these tiles were manufactured with embossed motifs which today are more commonly referred to as relief, low relief and high relief tiles. This particular example is a 6" X 6" tile which were used most commonly on fireplace mantle facings and kitchen splashes. This 1/2" thick, high relief tile, consists of mauve/burgundy glaze and is fired with a high gloss finish. It has a swirled and ribbed line motif all of which variate in length and thickness and emanate from a center core surrounded by pebble like shapes. It has sharp and crisp detail and the relief gives it substantial depth. On the back is the maker's mark with raised letters designating A.E. Tile ... moreCo. Limited. There is also a small amount of left over mortar. There are two tiny"nibbles" on the face that do not overtly affect the overall display. Purchased by a collector in 1973. There is a hand written note on the rear of the tile which documents his acquisition in"Isphahan" Iran which is Isfahan, Iran and located south of Tehran. This spelling was a more common spelling for English speaking visitors during the 20th century. This is one of three heavy hand made and hand painted great Persian/ Middle Eastern/ Islamic tiles that I am listing in addition to a few other cool items from the same area of the world and estates from here in the Charleston area. The tile is probably late 19th century to early 20th century and is absolutely gorgeous! The colors are vibrant and the hand painted tile is detailed and expressive. This is very consistent with tiles made between 1570 and 1600 at the Middleburg factory in the Netherlandsbut it is also possible that is from the 17th century. **Stunning Antique Majolica Encaustic Tile Co. Cherub Playing Cello!**
Here is a wonderful tile that is a deep amber shade and displaying a beautiful cherub playing a cello. Unmarked on the back. But I believe Majolica Encaustic Tile Co. Measures 8.75" tall and 4.25" across. Condition is pretty good. But as my pictures show all over crazing and some small chip/nicked areas. I am listing another. Very similar; however, playing a harp. Depicting a stately buck standing majestically on a hillside. There are no cracks. Chips or breaks of any kind. Back of the tile is marked: TRADE MARK X MADE IN ENGLAND and in two separate circles an M and 605 Also on the back is what looks like a pretzel as a mark in a triangle. Beneath the triangle is a row of several letters or pairs of letters with a pair of strikethrough lines on each. Two fisherman in a boat fishing. There is a cathedral and ducks in the scene as well. Lovely colors. Set inside an octagon with ornate designs around the edge in a deep blue. Thick pottery, nice large size. Amazing condition for age, very minor nicks around the edges. No breaks, cracks or repairs. I removed an old piece of felt which was glued to the back, it is stamped in black"Made n? I cannot make out what it reads. Makes an outstanding centerpiece to any collection!
