Heavy Persian sculpted tile showing a prince on horseback. With falcon. Likely Qajar. Late 19th century? Apparently only princes were allowed to be falconers. Measures about 8 and 5/8 inches by 5 and 1/4 inches. One-half inch thick. More or less. The thickness is not uniform. Glazed on front only. Typical crazing and crudely fashioned reverse. Has one crack. Visible front and back. Does not detract, but is reflected in price. See photos. Colors are stone. Light blue, yellow, light rose. Falcon's position is a bit different from other tiles of this type-he is off to the right of the prince rather than hovering over his head. U.S. bidders only. Please.

nbspA very pretty Polychrome Tile measuring 5 x 5 hand painted by the Makkum Tichelaar Co in Holland and is called a Polychrome Tile. It has the Sparkling Mica in the clay you can see on the back of the tile( had to take it off and then reglue it back on to get the backmark) I am not sure of the age as I don't know how to date the tiles. Dutch Delft Polychrome Tile Dimensions 4 X 4 inches 5/16 of an inch thick For your consideration we present an original Dutch Delft polychrome tile from Holland. It depicts a horse back rider. Probably a soldier. Nicely glazed surface. The background is off white with a bluish tint(compare photos; the tile shows whiter against the blue background) The clay is coarse and porous with a lot of mica(sparkling inclusions) A little bit of crazing. There are very few tiny glaze blisters and a few tiny glaze depressions(due to the porous nature of the clay) Very few minor flea bites around the edges(probably before firing) and a chipped corner(upper right) On the whole. The tile is in a remarkably good pre-owned condition! There are ... moreno breakages. Or cracks that run through the fired clay. The design is a little blurry. The tile is not stamped. But it bears a striking resemblance to two tiles by Tichelaar Makkum, that are listed separately. It dates prior to 1974. Please study the photos carefully before bidding. Purchased by a collector in 1973. There is a hand written note on the rear of the tile which documents his acquisition in"Isphahan" Iran which is Isfahan, Iran and located south of Tehran. This spelling was a more common spelling for English speaking visitors during the 20th century. This is one of three heavy hand made and hand painted great Middle Eastern/ Islamic tiles that I am listing in addition to a few other cool items from the same area of the world and estates from here in the Charleston area. The tile is probably late 19th century to early 20th century and is absolutely gorgeous! The colors are vibrant and the hand painted tile is detailed and expressive. Iranian or Persian / Islamic raised tile of Man riding White horse with Bird
This tile is a unique and rare find! I have done some research. And believe this to be from the late 1800's. However, I am no antique expert on Persian tile, so this is just my own opinion on the date. The tile depicts a man riding a horse with a bird. I believe the bird to be a falcon. If so, this tile would have been on a royal persons home as part of a motif since the falcons were used to signify royalty. If the bird is not a falcon, it would be a parrot. The tile is raised, not flat. The only damage I can see is from age cracks, which are pictured. As you can see from the photos, the back is in really great shape. This appears to have been on a wall at some point. So there is slight damage on the sides where it was attached, but that does not come to the front of tile. I believe the sticker was put on there so that it could be sold ... morein the US before the trade restrictions with Iran made such sales impossible. With the grout lines it is approx. 8 3/4 across. The frame is approx. 12 1/2 inches across. The tile has crazing on it. Most likely design. It is approximately 5 1/8" square and found in good used condition. This tile features a horse with rider musician. There are fleur di lis in each corner. The back is covered with older felt so the trivet will not scratch the surface ith rests on. There are losses to areas of the felt. California Art Knight on Horse tile - framed 5 3/4"
Up for sale is this great vintage California Art tile of a Knight on a horse. It measures right at about 5 3/4" square and has a nice semi-glossy finish on it. I have shown photos of a couple of rough spots on the tile. I have not removed it from the frame. As there is a paper backing as shown. I am presuming that it may have been set at some point, since the back has what seems to be the adhesive material that would be used to attach a tile to a wall, etc. The entire piece, including the frame, measures just under 9 1/2" square. I am not certain of the wood type used to frame this great piece. Item is sold as-is. So please see photos and ask any questions prior to bidding. This is a large glazed ceramic tile probably from Persia. There are raised images. Bright colors and in very good condition. The person who gave this to me was German and I thought this was a German tile but I couldn't find any German tiles that looked like the one I am selling. The horse on this tile seems tame. Almost standing still. There appears to be some color'wash' near the rider's foot and horse's tail- see photos Size: 14.75" x 9.75" Weight: 6.5 lbs. This piece does not have a signed paper from Dora Jones. The paper taped to the back was put on by the family member. The piece is signed Cis LA 1928. Cecil Jones would have been working at American Encaustic Tiling Co. at this time. The tile measures 12" high. 9" wide and about 1" deep(at an angle) It weighs 5 pounds 2 ounces. It is in very good condition. It has some marks and areas where the tile color is showing through the glaze. There is a gloss to the glaze and some very white areas in the photos are glare. He designed tiles and architectural faience for various English firms. In 1913. He came to the United States and worked for theAmerican Encaustic Tiling Co. in Zanesville, Ohio and then at the company’s Los Angeles plant until 1930. For two years he worked at Claycraft Pottery with the Robertsons. In 1933. His daughter, Dora, married George B. Robertson. Also in 1933 Jones worked for the Van Briggle Pottery and helped organize the Broadmoor Art Pottery in Colorado. In 1935 Jones founded La Mirada Pottery located at 3221 San Fernando Road in Los Angeles which had been the location of the Robertson Pottery. La Mirada was purchased in 1939 by Thomas Hamilton and renamed American Ceramic Products. Jones remained there as plant superintendent until 1945 when he retired. After his retirement he worked in his own studio to develop various luster glazes. He died in 1949. Jones was a member of the New York Society of Craftsmen.
