No cracks, beautiful handle and neck, heavy and sturdy. There is one tiny mark on the top. Which is not sharp so it may be a chip or it may have been there since it's creation. It has some light scuff marks on the bottom, but that is to be expected. There is some shadowing on the inside which may be cleaned; little specks of something here and there but nothing major. I have not been able to figure out exactly what this is. Jar. Jug, pitcher? I just know it is quite unusual. In all my prevalent antiquing I have not seen another like this. Perhaps the spout is to prevent ice from going into a cup? It has very thick glass and a spout that looks sawed off but was definitely made to be that way. I t is heavy for its size: 5.75 inches tall. 3 inches wide on bottom. And 5.5 inches wide between spout and handle. There are markings on the bottom of the jug: a"W" with a# 11" underneath it(see photo) The condition is perfect; no cracks. Chips, marks- nothing. Very interesting to look at from all angles. These truly OLD Glass Wine Demijohn Jug s are just getting almost Impossible to find anymore(and more and more Expensive when we DO find them) No wonder.as they've become so collectible most people won't part with them once they have at least ONE. THESE are the old glass demijohn jugs they used to wrap in wicker for wine. We have a supplier who imported many of these old jugs from Italy(with and without the wicker) several years ago. We've picked through them through the years and sold them here in our ebay store. But when we went on our last buying run we discovered that his inventory is almost exhausted. So we bought ALL of the remaining jugs(those with and without wicker) regardless of condition because we know it's doubtful he'll be able to source more in the future. Designers love to use these to make arrangements ... morewith. You can see them in many of the designer magazines that are out AND they turn up regularly on many of the cable design shows. 2-Gallon Owens-Illinois Glass Kerosene Bottle-Dispenser / circa 1936
Nice circa 1936 Owens-Illinois 2-gallon kerosene bottle. Has a very clear maker's mark on the bottom of the bottle. Showing it was manufactured in Alton, Illinois in 1936. 99% clean with just a slight residue left in the interior. 17" high x approximately 8" in diameter. Nice original metal spring-loaded nozzle and cap. Original metal collar and handle. All metal has some minor tarnish patina. No cracks. Chips or breaks, just a few insignificant scratches from use-wear. The bottom of the bottle has that terrific veining synonymous with the Owens-Illinois glass firing process. This bottle measures 13 1/4 in. tall. 6 1/2 in. Across the middle& 5 1/2 in. Across the bottom. This bottle has no chips,cracks or repairs. This could be used as an umbrella stand or to hold dried flowers such as elephant grass. Please be sure to see the other art glass we have listed. FEATURES: Completely hand-blown with molded curved handle. It has a wide mouth opening of 3-1/2" When the piece was blown. The neck and shoulders are made of thicker glass with a deeper brown color. As the walls were blown, the glass was drawn much thinner and has a yellowish hue. It thickens up on the bottom and is a dark brown almost opaque color. There is a pontile mark on the bottom and a turned up molded"tail" on the handle. There are even a few bonus bubbles in the glass in various ... moreplaces. ADD. Early 1900 Antique Square Glass Bottle Milk JAR w Ledge for Cap, Metal Wire Bail
Antique Milk Bottle: One of the most distinctive features of a milk bottle is the type of seal on the bottle. E arly milk bottles used glass or tin lids to seal the bottle. Bottle Design History: A major drawback of milk bottles with glass or metal lids was the difficulty in cleaning the bottle. The lid and the bail that held them on. Metal parts were prone to corrosion and if the lid was not attached to the bail it was often lost. Thatcher advertisements for the cap seat milk bottle from 1893 claimed that customers would keep bail top milk bottles rather than returning them since they had a reusable cap and could easily be converted to domestic use. Another problem was that metal bail caps were prone to damage in freezing weather. When milk bottles were left on the porch in freezing cold. Milk would expand and bend or break the metal lid ... moresince it was attached to the bottle. A paper cap would simply push out o f the mouth of the bottle. This Bottle: This bottle features a cap seat with a ledge or shoulder for the milk cap to seal on. It appears bottle manufacturers designed their milk bottles with cap seats that would also fit tin caps. A paper published in 1907 by C. C. Johnson concerning the nation's milk supply estimated that 60% of milk bottles in use at that time were equipped with a tin cap as well as a paper cap. Where's the name. Or stamp: Sears. Roebuck and Company advertised milk bottles for sale to large dealers and milk depots- they could stamp the date or other information on the cap. Which would allow them to trace back cases of unsatisfactory milk. This was the start of personalized milk caps. Those milk protector jars will have no patent date on the jar since it was the lid that was patented- not the milk jar. And there you have it- a classic quart milk bottle. If you have questions.
