A handpainted scene framed ceramic tile. Frame is wooden. Has wooden backing thin strip with wooden tabs for holding the tile in the frame. Glossy tile with the words Made in Japan on the back and a name and date of February 4. 1946 handwritten on it. Hangs diagonally. Measures 6" x 6" The tile is well perserved- colors are bright on landscape picture scene. The wooden frame has a chip in on the corners, otherwise nicely stained an attique finish. Belgium Delft Blue Tile by GILLIOT& CIE S.A. Handpainted in Holland Dimensions 4 1/8 X 4 1/8 inches c. 2/8 of an inch thick For your consideration we offer an original Belgium Delft blue tile. It was manufactured by the factory of George Gilliot in Hemiksen/ Antwerp. Belgium, but decorated by hand in Holland. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE The factory was founded in 1897 by George Gilliot in Hemiksem. As floor and wall tile factory, with John Salt, a ceramic specialist trained at Sèvres, as technical director. At the turn of the 20th century, the firm saw rapid expansion with a working force reaching nine hundred personnel in 1913. The last tiles were produced there in 1978 and the company was closed down by Sphinx Maastricht in 1985( the information is taken from the website of the British Museum in London) The tile ... moreshows a man rolling a barrel down the street. Nicely glazed surface. Fine. Light colored clay with no mica(sparkling inclusions) No crazing. The tile is stamped with the factory's insignia: a capital H within a circle and the writing MADE IN BELGIUM(illegible and hard to see in the photos) There are 5 more impressed circles with a grid pattern within. One stamp is covered. But I believe it would have been the letters FF(for the date of manufacture. Ie. 1966) Another stamp within a circle reads 538 and S4F. It still has a triangular hook for suspension. But not in good condition; I would not trust it for hanging. On the whole. It is in a remarkably good pre-owned condition! I can see no damage to the tile. We have a total of 10 tiles in this design. With no apparent damage. They may need a little cleaning. Many of the tiles have illegible traces of a blue stamp that originally said: Handpainted. Made in Holland Please study the photos carefully before bidding. Because they are part of the description. This is a canal scene featuring water. A man in a boat, bull rushes, a country manor, storage or silo bin, windmill, birds, trees and another building in the distance. Reverse side is marked: DELFT ~ HANDPAINTED ~ MADE IN HOLLAND ~ 5-POINTED CROWN MARK.I can't be certain if this is in blue or green. The other markings are pressed ... morein.one is the letter"G" with a laurel leaf wreath surrounding it and the other is numbers 222432 and a series of raised dots. Someone in the distant past has put glue and what appears to be a piece of cloth with a little metal hanger on the back! I don't believe this has to necessarily stay in its gold-colored twisted frame and believe it would make a beautiful tile on it own as a centerpiece for a tile mural. There is one tiny chip on the front on the bottom edge just left of center and another on the back side just left of the right-hand corner. This one is not visible from the front. However, we also found many, many items that were wrapped in the La Presse(Montreal, Quebec, Canada) from the 60's. Additional items were wrapped in a Dutch newspaper from the 60's also. So it is a bit of a conundrum as to when and/or where these actually originate from. This Marvelous Earthenware/ Ceramic Tea Tile measures about 5 7/8 across the face Numerous marks on the back. FOUR HANDPAINTED POLYCHROME HARLINGEN. HOLLAND DELFT TILES These are four beautiful handpainted Delft tiles that were originally part of a fireplace in an older Cape Cod home. The adhesive used to secure the tiles to the fireplace is still on the backs of the tiles- it is visible in the pictures and we have not attempted to remove the adhesive. On the backs of two of the tiles we are able to see HARLINGEN HOLLAND along with the company logo impressed into the tile. Because of the adhesive we are not able to see the backs of the other two tiles. However. They all came from the same fireplace and appear to be similar in design. The colors are blues, greens, yellows, tans, and browns. Approximate size 5 1/16 x 5 1/16. The tiles are in good condition for their age. As you can see in picture 3 there is a piece of the edge chipped off. There is, ... morealso, some chaulking around the edges of the tiles. Incredable old tile which I purchased from a very reputable dealer. This is an American Encaustic Tile, Zaneville OH, Beautiflly portrays a winged cherub and Maiden floating on clouds. The color is a deep aqua blue. This was put into a custom frame, the tile measures 18" long, framed is 20" x 8" The tile was repaired on the upper left cotner above the ladies head, I have tilted it into the sunlight in the last photo so you could see it. Dark blue, brownish with wine red, yellow& turquoise Flowering and a darkpurple Songbird including all other colors as well. All outlined in black. The background is light. It has been placed in metal frame and a long time ago painted Gold. I am sure this could be easily removed if so desired.I can not tell if the tile isglazed or unglazed.
