Antique Pottery Minton TILE THE TANNER Stoke on Trent England RARE MOHR SMITH
I am offering on Buy It Now an antique tile from Mintons China Works. This very rare find from circa 1875 consists of a cobalt and white tile from the Mohr Smith Industrial Series from Stoke on Trent. England. The tile measures 6" X 6" and 1/2" thick. This tile depicts a Tanner and his helper at work a a hide with a brick wall background. He looks like a strong layman working at his trade. The scene is very detailed and there is old English writing saying The Tanner. I have noted that this rare tile is in very good condition with minimal wear as seen in the pictures. This tile is marked on the back and has slight cement residue from use. I am selling several other tiles from this same series in varying condition. Beautiful antique tile by the Minton China Works commemorating the Old Hancock House. The house was built in 1737 by Joshua Blanchard for Thomas Hancock. A prominent and patriotic Merchant of Boston, the first Signer of the Declaration of American Independence, and First Governor of Massachusetts, under the State Constitution. The home was located at 30 Beacon Street on Beacon Hill, Boston, Massachusetts. It stood near the southwest corner of what are today the grounds of the Massachusetts State House. In 1863, the Hancock Manor House was, sadly, demolished. This tile was produced around 1895 and is in very good condition with nice rich glaze and a light crazing. Antique Minton Tile - Pugin Design -Sanctus
These tiles were designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin and manufactured in the 2nd quarter of the 19th Century apx. 1825-1850. This is an example of the Gothic Revivalist movement in English Architecture during this period. The tiles are manufactured by the Minton Co. The design includes the word"Sanctus" which is Latin for"Sanctuary" I do not know from which Cathedral these tiles came out of but they most definitely would have been from a very prominent structure in the UK. This tile is 6" x 6" and it is 1" thick. It has round pieces of cork adhered to it. I am guessing it was used as a trivet at home point. Please view the photos to determine condition for yourself. It remains sturdy and strong. It is also heavy! Minton& Co c.1828- 1868 commercial production from circa 1835. Tile making managed by partner Michael Daintry Hollins from 1840 onwards whence the brand name. Minton, Hollins, Co. was adopted. Michael Hollins is recorded as working in the factory from at least 1838. 5] Minton Hollins& Co. And Minton& Co brands were used on tiles contemporaneously in the nineteenth century, catalogues, letterheads and advertising wares show Minton& Co in conjunction with Minton Hollins& Co as late as 1912. Campbell started making tiles contrary to the agreement and Hollins sued. The court found in favour of Hollins who received a large sum in settlement from Campbell. Wonderful early Mintons tile with young woman carrying a jug over her shoulder. This brown transferwere tile is in great shape! There are no discoloration problems. The color is vivid throughout the tile, sorry about the glare on a few of the photos, the glazing is in excellent condition) There is extremely minor wear to the very edge of the tile on the upper left side, but you really have to look close to notice it at all, it may have been there in the making. I believe this is earthenware with a transfer-printed decoration. Unfortunately. I don't know which artist painted this one. This is not in perfect condition. This lovely blue and white transfer printed tile is marked MINTON HOLLINS& CO TILE WORKS- STOKE ON TRENT-No. 2 RCW The tile is in overall good condition with only a few flea bite chips on the edges. There is some very slight crazing and 2 very thin hairline cracks which are only noticeable after a close examination(see photos) It is 6" x 6" and is 9/16" thick. Antique Pair of Minton ceramic Tiles Aesops Fables Lion and Rat 1872 19th
This is a pair of Minton ceramic tiles that were based on Aesops fables. The tiles are 6 inches by 6 inches. These were designed by either J. Moyr Smith or Thomas Allen in 1872. The tiles are brown and white. One of them is called the Lion and the Rat and the other is The Goat Calf and Sheep in Partnership with the Lion. Both tiles are marked on the back Minton’s China Works. Stoke on Trent and have a hallmark that reads Stoke on Trent Walbrook London. The lion and the rat tile has a small chip in the bottom right corner and smaller chip on the top right corner.

Thick Antique Minton Encaustic Floor Tile Decorative Arts & Crafts salvage
The Minton company did the tile flooring in the US Capital building. Due to its thickness I believe this to be a flooring tile. Its just shy of 1" thick. The tile was salvaged from somewhere. It has tiny bits of mortar on it still and tiny chips including the corners. I showed one of the chips in the photos. I wish I knew where it came from. But hey this gives you a great opportunity to make up any story you want about its origin. The Minton company has been around since about 1798 and got started with encaustic floor tiles around 1845. The tile is 6" square, and weighs almost 3 lbs. The 3 colors must have been fired seperately because the surface colors have texture. Someone put little rubber pads on the corner so it could be used on a table as a decoration or a trivet.

NO RESERVE! These are two beautiful old ceramic tiles. Approximately 6" square. One of them is about 1/2" thick(without the relief) the other one is slightly thinner. Olive green glaze. High reliefs of women's profiles. One of them(on the right in the main picture) was made by Minton Hollins& Co. in England and is accordingly marked. The other one has no manufacturer's marks. But appears to come from the same company(the inverse relief on the back does not leave enough room for the mark) They probably date to the late 19th century. In very good condition. However there are a few flaws. One of them has a tiny chip on the lower right corner, both of them have a couple of small bruises on the high parts of the reliefs. Seven beautiful antique tiles. The back of each reads: ROBERT MINTON TAYLOR FENTON NEAR STOKE UPON TRENT. The size of each tile is 6" x 3" x 1/2" thick. These are in fairly good condition but please see the pictures carefully. Some of the tiles have a white film on the glaze. I'm not sure if this is something that can be cleaned off or not- I wiped them with a damp cloth but didn't try any type of solvent cleaner. Antique Minton Hollins Blue & White Tile Bird Holly Christmas
Up for auction is a lovely antique tile from Minton Hollins. Depicting a bird(a robin, perhaps? on a holly bush. The scene is surrounded by a decorative pattern, also in blue and white. I was told this was made in the late 1800s. The tile measures 6 by 6 inches. It was at one point installed, as evidenced by bits of adhesive on the back and edges of the tile. There are some small chips along the side edges, including a few along the bottom edge. There are scuffs and light scratches on the front, but nothing troublesome. I think most of the scratches are actually crazing. The back reads, Minton Hollins Co"then a word I can't decipher-and"Stoke on Trent. A Minton's Stoke on Trent tile- Oliver Wendell Holmes birthplace in Cambridge Mass. home with the monogram OWH in each of the 4 corners. Marked Rd No. 04814 Copyrighted 1888 by Norcross(the rest is illegible) see pictures. It is in fairly good condition for it's age and from the back you can see it was a used tile that was taken off something. It still has a nice gloss to the front. It does have a lot of crazing and a chip towards the back of the tile that does not show from the front. General edge roughness. It measures 6 1/8" square and is approximately 1/4" thick. Up for auction is a vintage antique MINTON Hollis& Co. Stoke on Trent, floral and fruit decorated yellow and blue transfer tile recently found at auction in the suburban Philadelphia PA area. The tile is 5 7/8 x 6" There are some chips and some factory flaws. There is roughness to all edges. None the less a wonderful vintage antique tile for the wall, a trivet, or any repurposing needs.
