They make a superb set mounted in their frame. The ground is cream and design is in purplish brown colour. The scenes on the tiles are of the canal with windmill. Boats and farm or church with small designs in the corners. They are uniquely hand painted in this wonderfully naive style. The condition of all 3 tiles is particularly good for this age. There are a few frits and nibbles to the edge. Some crazing and the tile on the right is slightly brown on the top, this may be the result of old tobacco smoke. Each tile measures 13cm x 13 cm x 7mm(approximately) or 5¼ inches x 5¼ inches. Fine Pombaline Pattern Portuguese tile panel description Fine set of 36 Portuguese tiles made in the second half of the 18 th century. After the 1755 earthquake that destroyed parts of Lisbon. There was a huge demand for tiles. Pattern tiles served the purpose as they could be produced quickly and the pattern tiles could be used on large and small surfaces. These tiles which had an enormous variety of trellis and rosette motifs. Came to known as Pombalines, a reference to the Marquis of pombal who had a great role in reconstructing lisbon. Size of the four tiles with yellow corner filling are about 14.1 x 14.1 cm(about 5.5”square each tile) The border tiles are slightly smaller. 14.0 x 14.0 cm and the tiles with Purple flowers are bigger, 14.2 x 14.2 cm. Overall dimension of this panel is 85 x 85 cm or 33.5 x 33.5 inches. Some of the tiles ... morefrom this set have glaze chips to sides. 17th 18th century hand painted tiles set square biblical antique vintage RARE
I purchased these in San Francisco from a very reputable dealer I've worked with over the years. He told me these were 17 th century but I have no way of proving their age. It's abundantly clear they are very. Very old. The glaze used for painting the images is a really pretty eggplant with widely varying tones depending on how the artist wanted the shading to look. There appears to be Bible references written at the base of each tile. There is a fair amount of chipping at the top of the one marked MAT:27:24 although they each have their'issues' with respect to condition. NO CRACKS and could be set into grout easily. They measure 5 inches square. If there is anything I've missed please ask questions so I can get you the info you're looking for!
