Beautiful rare antique Merkel hand painted porcelain tile of a young boy in excellent condition in a lovely original gold frame with crown molding detail. Great detail and color. No chips. Crazing, cracks or losses of any kind. Label on back of tile reads KUMSTINSTITUT FUR PORZELLAN MALEREI MERKEL-HEINE WIESBADEN. There is an impressed mark 115 and hand written in pencil 1489. There is also a handwritten label which I am unable to read and have pictured. I believe it may be the artist. Labels at the edge attach the tile to the frame. These labels are for Foster Brothers, 4 Park Square, Boston. The gold cardboard backing is held in place with brass nails. It is secure but some of the nails are missing. One of a man holding a tall pole and other figure sitting with a fishing pole. Each dressed in asian style clothing. These are mid to late 18th. century. The tile depicting a man seated while fishing and facing right measures 4& 7/8" square x 1/2" thick. The tile with figure standing is 5" Square and 1/2" thick. The colors include: green. The tables are very nice and are made of hand forged wrought iron. They have simple. Elegant lines. They each have cabriole legs which are hammered along their sides. There is a decorative accent beneath the table tops of delicate wrought iron"C" curves with small gilted iron connectors in between. The legs are connected with twisted wrought iron on the lower sections. The feet are simple, upturned iron. The table tops are open with a lip that houses the beautiful tile. THE TILES! Each table has hand made. 6"x"6 tiles, hand painted and marked, from Germany(see picture 11) Each tile is a displays a beautiful representation of different European and Asia cities. Two signed vintage hand painted Rugerio tiles. 1930's-1940's. First one is Don Quixote signed RUGERIO on the left corner and signed S on the right corner. The second tile is signed in the midways. The second tile pictured has a place on the upper right corner that appears to be a nick but on close examination it is simply made that way the glaze just ended at that point and is very smooth. Taken from Master Paintings of the Word- Heva Coomans- Munsey's Magazine- 1895) Joseph Coomans was one of the most popular European artist collected by Americans. He was a native of Brussels. Later moved to Paris, and traveled extensively to Italy, where he became interested in the remains of Ancient Pompeii. He had two daughters, both of whom possessed remarkable artistic gifts, and who as his pupils, also became well known painters.
