From Dixon's"A Voyage Round the World; but more Particularly to the North-West Coast of America" London, 1789) In 1785-87[Dixon] sailed with Nathaniel Portlock for the King George's Sound Company, which had been established for trading furs from the northwest ... morecoast of America to China. With the ships King George(under Portlock) and Queen Charlotte(under Dixon) they arrived on the Alaskan coast in July 1786. After wintering in the Sandwich Islands(winter 1786-87) the two captains returned to northern waters, visiting the Cook Inlet, Prince William Sound, the Alaskan mainland and the Queen Charlotte Islands. However the interior was just then being explored in detail. The Klondike and Alaska Gold Rushes were in full swing at the time and the river valleys were well mapped. The Alaska Mountains are labeled but very poorly defined with no suggestion of Denali at the time. In addition there is only a hint of mountains where the Brooks Range is. The map measures 11 by 14 inches and an index in the margin lists the population by white. Mixed, Indian, Mongolian, Eskimo, Thlinket, Athabaskan, Aleut, Tsimpsean, and Hyda.
