Offered for your consideration is a pre-owned Niihau shell Kipona style Lei Necklace with Kahelelani and Momi Shells. It is 42 inches long. In very good condition. No damage. It was purchased at a high end estate sale. The prior owner purchased it from a gallery on the Big Island, some years ago. Since purchasing this I have studied Niihau shell leis a bit, and feel this is one of the nicest examples I have seen. It has the long length, intensely hued shells, and quality craftsmanship. I nformation on shell identification was found on the Niihau Cultural Heritage Foundation web site. I believe the shells in this necklace are as follows. This hawaiian shell lei was brought back from Hawaii about 30 years ago. There is no COA with this, which is why I am pricing so low. The necklace features two strands of very tiny speckled turban kahelelani shells strung in a spiral pattern. From a distance. They appear to be a dusty pink color, but upon closer inspection are brown and white. There are tiny pinholes in the sides of a few shells. Gorgeous vintage Niihau shell lei necklace. Six beautifully matched strands of Niihau shells. This was a treasured piece that belonged to my great aunt. I'd date it o the 1940s or earlier. I know she lived in Hawaii then and had it when she moved to California in the 1950s. The lei necklace measures over 16" long from cowry clasp to bottom of necklace when worn. So. Total length of shell strands is approx. 31" This item was made in Hawaii and is at least 80% Niihau shells. This necklace is actually 100% Niihau shells excluding the cowry clasp. If you know the history of making such amazing leis, it is a painstaking effort. Completely hand made from the collecting of the shells, to sorting them, to drilling the holes in each small shell. According to Linda Paik Moriarty's book Niihau Shell Leis, an average of one out of three ... moreshells breaks during the drilling process for even the most expert of lei makers. Each shell was carefully handpicked by the lei maker. The smaller the shell, the more difficult it is to clean and pierce successfully. In the Lei Kui Pololei style, grains of sand are left in the aperture(opening) of the Ni’ihau shell to prevent the thread from moving out of the aperture.
