Important 1827 maps of the Aleutian Islands. Alaska, from the Vandermaelen atlas Here is a pair of original 1827 maps by Philippe Vandermaelen. They are from his"Atlas Universel de Geographie" Folio(folded once as issued) Brussells, 1827. This was the world's first large atlas on a uniform scale. The Atlas Universel was one of the most remarkable atlases ever made. With over 400 maps on a uniform scale, and completed in only three years. There are tracks of Captain Joseph Billings(Route du Capitaine Bilings en 1790" Captain Sarychev, and Captain James Cook. Size overall of each map(including margins) is about 21 inches X 27 ½ inches. The actual"printed area" is about 19 high by 24 inches wide. There is slight foxing. Here and there, to the paper. There are a few tiny holes at the fold where the map was stitched ... moreinto the atlas. The maps have good overall even tonality. These two maps show the region that includes most of the Aleutian Islands out to Attu. Buldir Island. Unalaska, Umnak, Akun in the Fox Islands, Unimak, Adak Island, Atka Island, Amchitka Island, Kiska Island, Agattu Island, Shemya, etc. These two rare maps framed, side by side, will look spectacular! HUGE 1896 Coast Survey map of Alaska Bering Sea Aleutian Islands Gulf antique
A huge original coast survey map of Alaska from 1896. About 50 x 29 inches. Map is overall very nice. Clean. Folded. It appears to be made from two large pieces of map paper put together. You can see a clean seam near the left side. The lower border edge has some light wrinkling from a water line; but is still nice. See all in photos. If flattened and framed. It could be a nice dramatic piece.
