Contents are holding firmly though damp-stained throughout toward upper edges, most severe to the first twenty-five maps plus prelims, the second half(which includes Greece, World, Middle East/India, and the Americas) less severely affected, most maps are stained on mostly outer edge of map. The map paper is not brittle and there are no tears, cuts, chipping or markings on maps other than stains. Some general light dust-soiling and finger-marking. I did a lot of searching until I could find a copy in such pristine condition. Although there are some normal antique wear"use" marks. Such as minor dog-earring and yellowing, the pages are in the best condition I have yet to see with this work of art. None of the pages are torn or have holes. Some have very minor pencil marks in the white margins, which could be easily erased. The back inside cover has a pencil sketch of a home design, dated"1866. This only adds to the item. Beautiful Hand Colored 1887 Catholic Atlas This lovely book is a collectible you would be proud to have in your library. It is"Atlas Pour Servir a L'Enseignement et a L'etude de L'historie Universelle de L'Eglise Catholique" by A. H. Dufour. My 8th grade French is a bit rusty. But this appears to be a wonderful atlas concerning the history of the Catholic Church. It is written in French, and contains 24 double page maps that are hand colored. Most maps are large, a few pages contain smaller maps. Each page measures over 11.5" by 17" The date is 1887. The maps in this Atlas are quite fascinating. Not only do they show different countries and continents. They also show history. One map depicts how Europe looked in 771, one shows the paths of the crusades, another shows the route of Kublai Khan. The maps towards the end of the book at straight forward maps of Africa and the Americas. This book is in good condition for its age. The pages are a yellowed parchment color. They came out more white on my camera for some reason. The paper is not white. The maps are all complete with no water damage or rips, but there are some age spots and places where the hand coloring of the borders and rivers has seeped through to the back of the page a little. The spine is loose and split along the top of the front cover. The corners of the covers are worn. The first few pages have some chips out of the paper at the top, but it doesn't come anywhere near the map outline. These unique maps are suitable for framing. This book is sold in aged, as-is condition! I have described this to the best of my ability but please feel free to ask questions, I am not an expert on books. Embraced in Sixty-three Quarto Maps. Forming a series of One Hundred Maps and Plans Together With Valuable Statistical Tables. This atlas was published by Augustus Mitchell. Out of Philadelphia, in 1871. The atlas is bound in the original 1/2 leather over blind embossed cloth boards with gilt titling to the front board. There is rubbing to the board extremities. Wearing through the cloth in a few places, as expected for an atlas of this age. Binding and hinges are still tight and solid. There is a previous owner's pencil inscription on the title page, dated 1924; and another brief pencil inscription on the front free endpaper, dated 1940. 1862- PARTIAL- Antique Johnson's Family Atlas Johnson& Ward Hand Colored 38 Hand Colored Maps Still Present- Majority Are 2-Page This listing is for a PARTIAL Johnson's Family Atlas. The folio style maps were all professionally removed. Most of the maps still remain(please see the complete list below) This is a hard to find 1862 edition and all of the maps are the 1862 edition as you can tell by looking at the boarder. The maps are in good condition and free from foxing. There are some minor tears only on a couple of maps and would not effect framing. These are large 1-sided folio maps and they are all hand colored. They would have been assembled into the book 1 by 1 and they were removed the same way. Antique 1926 Universal Map Co. Series 10 Colored Insert US & World Maps
It's amazing how the world changes in 89 years! This is a sample group of 10 colored insert maps. Produced by the Universal Map Company in 1926. The maps vary in size- from 8" x 11" to 9 1/2" x 13 1/2" All are in remarkably good condition, considering their age. They are only slightly browned, and a couple of them have some very minimal foxing. The final large US map is in the worst condition. It was folded to fit between the covers, and there is a water-stain at the base of the fold. There is also a small tear at the bottom of the page. The booklet. Which is 9 1/2" x 11 1/2" does have some tears on both the front and back, but it has served its purpose well in protecting the maps. The booklet is undated. But I have some"Instructive Geography Cards" bearing the same maps from the same company with ... morea copyright date of 1926 on them. The cover of the book states that there are 11 maps. But there are actually 10: North America South America Africa Asia New York Australasia(sic) The World(showing principal trade routes) Europe The World(Hemispheres) The United States(folded) If you have any questions.
