It was originally the feudal domain of the Counts of Auvergne. It is now the geographical area that corresponds to the former province. Bourbonnais was a historic province in the centre of France t hat corresponded to the modern departement of Allier. Along with part of the department of Cher. The map has lots of topographical detail and shows numerous place names. Some of the features on the map are towns. Villages, rivers, hills, roads, bridges, estates and forests. The map is on hand laid paper and has a beautiful decorated title cartouche in the upper right corner. The map is greatly enhanced with later added hand coloring. It is blank of the reverse side. It measures approximately 29" x 21" Including the border area. The map has a good 3 1/2" border on the left and the right. The map is in Good condition. There is some age related browning and staining. Particularly along the edges. There are several chips and tears along the edges(these will not show when framed) The top edge is creased and the creases extend slightly into the very top. Middle portion of the map. The map has a crease/fold line down the middle from when it was originally bound. There are some pencil notes along the bottom right border by a previous owner. From Dixon's"A Voyage Round the World; but more Particularly to the North-West Coast of America" London, 1789) In 1785-87[Dixon] sailed with Nathaniel Portlock for the King George's Sound Company, which had been established for trading furs from the northwest ... morecoast of America to China. With the ships King George(under Portlock) and Queen Charlotte(under Dixon) they arrived on the Alaskan coast in July 1786. After wintering in the Sandwich Islands(winter 1786-87) the two captains returned to northern waters, visiting the Cook Inlet, Prince William Sound, the Alaskan mainland and the Queen Charlotte Islands. Dixon disposed of his cargo and returned to England in 1788, the following year publishing his popular Voyage Round the World. The bulk of the book consists of descriptive letters by William Beresford, his supercargo, but it contains valuable charts and appendices by Dixon himself.
