This is an extremely rare large antique solid brass crucifix. The item is beautifully hand crafted and has splendid detail. It depicts the twelve apostles on all four points of the cross. What makes these icons extremely rare is that normally the figure of Judas is normally replaced by either St. Matthias or St. Paul. This item depicts Judas holding the dagger. Up for auction is a very handsome FIRST EDITION of the rare Catholic novel. MARY LEE. Or THE YANKEE IN IRELAND. By Paul Peppergrass. Published by Thos. B. Noonan& Company in Boston in 1859. Peppergrass was the pseudonym of John Boyce. An Irish priest who served in Maine, and later, Worcester, Massachusetts. He was also a gifted novelist, and this work first appeared serially in the Metropolitan Magazine of Baltimore the same year. First editions of this work are quite scarce. RARE ! PAIR LARGE VINTAGE CATHOLIC PRIEST DOLLS AUTHENTIC CLOTHING QUALITY USA
These dolls were discovered in a very wealthy collectors home years ago! The dolls stand about 22 1/2in tall. The outfits were made or manufactured with a labor of love and super detail. So much so that I did not want to undress them to see who the maker of the dolls were! I was afraid I would unsnap or un button something that would not be able to be redone by me! These outfits on these priests were done with strict attention to detail. There are buttons,snaps and full undergarments. The dolls have sleepy eyes and without a doubt were manufacturered by a leading USA maker circa 1954. The face is of softer pliable vinyl as the hands but the body/ legs is hard plastic. As stated I CHOOSE NOT TO TAKE APART THE OUTFIT TO FIND THE USA MAKERS MARK. These came from a non smoking wealthy home and it is apparent that they were never touched or played ... morewith! The only culprit was the sun which discolored the robes as shown in photos. There is one pinhead size hole in the one priests outfit which is hardly worth a mention. The vinyl is in excellent condition. The outfits are just a little dusty. I can assure you that the home was very clean,almost museum like, full of very high end antiques and it was evident that money was never an issue. In short if it were not for the discoloration or the pin hole these would be in super excellent condition. These are the most wild pieces I have seen. The outfits are probably exact intricate copies of the real things. Whether you are a doll collector, devoted catholic as I or collector of the macabre you will never find a pair of large vintage catholic priest dolls as these! Difficult to date precisely. But I would guess 1940s or 50s. The piece is made of black rayon moire and lined in purple rayon acetate. The garment is crossed at both the front and back with purple velvet. The back has a printed image of Jesus wearing a crown of thorns- I believe that this chasuble would have been used for Good Friday service. Black and purple are colors typically used during Lent, but black was also used on All Souls Day and at funerals. The image of Jesus is quite beautiful, edged with metallic gold ... morerickrack and accented with gold and satin roping. It is in very good condition with the exception of some yellowish discoloration to the velvet, mostly to the top and bottom and at seam joints. Otherwise, it is in very good condition and looks great. It measures 55 across the top from the end of one sleeve, over the shoulders, and to the end of the other sleeve. It has a length of 47 and weighs 1 lb and 4 oz.
