Earthenware, 6 inches square. It does not appear to be marked on the reverse. Condition: There is an old chip. Roughly.25 by.125 inches, near the upper right corner. There are a few miniscule chips at the edges. There is some slight overall crazing. Surface dirt and frit on the sides and back. This handsome English art pottery tile by Mintons is colored in greens. Golds, and browns. Part of the series depicting scenes from various plays by William Shakespeare, it is entitled THE TEMPEST I- II. The tile depicts the scene when the shipwrecked Prospero beckons his spirit Ariel. According to Sparknotes in his conversation with Ariel. We learn that Prospero and ... morethe spirit were responsible for the storm of Act I, scene i. Flying about the ship, Ariel acted as the wind, the thunder, and the lightning. When everyone except the crew had abandoned the ship, Ariel made sure, as Prospero had requested, that all were brought safely to shore but dispersed around the island. Ariel reports that the kings son is alone. He also tells Prospero that the mariners and Boatswain have been charmed to sleep in the ship, which has been brought safely to harbor. The rest of the fleet that was with the ship, believing it to have been destroyed by the storm, has headed safely back to Naples. Prospero thanks Ariel for his service, and Ariel takes this moment to remind Prospero of his promise to take one year off of his agreed time of servitude if Ariel performs his services without complaint. I am offering on Buy It Now an antique tile from Mintons China Works. This very rare find from circa 1875 consists of a cobalt and white tile from the Mohr Smith Industrial Series from Stoke on Trent. England. The tile measures 6" X 6" and 1/2" thick. This tile depicts a Tanner and his helper at work a a hide with a brick wall background. He looks like a strong layman working at his trade. The scene is very detailed and there is old English writing saying The Tanner. I have noted that this rare tile is in very good condition with minimal wear as seen in the pictures. This tile is marked on the back and has slight cement residue from use. I am selling several other tiles from this same series in varying condition. Offered for bifd is an English tile made by Minton The tile is in good condition There is no damage to the top glazed portion of the tile There are a few minor flakes along the bottom edge which cannot be seen when it is lying flat. Beautiful Antique Tile - Minton China Works, Old Hancock Manor House, Boston, MA
Beautiful antique tile by the Minton China Works commemorating the Old Hancock House. The house was built in 1737 by Joshua Blanchard for Thomas Hancock. A prominent and patriotic Merchant of Boston, the first Signer of the Declaration of American Independence, and First Governor of Massachusetts, under the State Constitution. The home was located at 30 Beacon Street on Beacon Hill, Boston, Massachusetts. It stood near the southwest corner of what are today the grounds of the Massachusetts State House. In 1863, the Hancock Manor House was, sadly, demolished. This tile was produced around 1895 and is in very good condition with nice rich glaze and a light crazing. There are a few minor chips along edges but it does not detract from the beauty of this wonderful tile. Selling a beautiful Minton's China Works. Stoke on Trent tile of the"Old Hancock House" of Boston, Mass. This is a transfer tile with John Hancock's former home, John Hancock was a former governor of Mass. The house itself was erected in 1737 and demolished in 1863 to make way for a new wing of the State House. The back of the tile is marked Minton China Works with their logo indicating Stoke Upon Trent, Walbrook, London.The blue marking reads"Published By Macullar Parker Company. This tile was one of a pair of tiles produced around 1895. the other being the"Boston State House 1818" exclusively made for and distributed for the Macullar Parker Co as souvenirs for visitors to Boston. Antique Minton Tile - Pugin Design -Sanctus
These tiles were designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin and manufactured in the 2nd quarter of the 19th Century apx. 1825-1850. This is an example of the Gothic Revivalist movement in English Architecture during this period. The tiles are manufactured by the Minton Co. The design includes the word"Sanctus" which is Latin for"Sanctuary" I do not know from which Cathedral these tiles came out of but they most definitely would have been from a very prominent structure in the UK. I purchased them from Liberty's in London more than 20 years ago. These are rare and for the discerning collector of Victorian era architecture and or tile. Thank you for your consideration. Antique 19c (1800's) MINTON & CO-Stoke upon Trent Tile/Trivet-nouveau-deco-artsy
This tile is 6" x 6" and it is 1" thick. It has round pieces of cork adhered to it. I am guessing it was used as a trivet at home point. Please view the photos to determine condition for yourself. It remains sturdy and strong. It is also heavy! Minton& Co c.1828- 1868 commercial production from circa 1835. Tile making managed by partner Michael Daintry Hollins from 1840 onwards whence the brand name. Minton, Hollins, Co. was adopted. Michael Hollins is recorded as working in the factory from at least 1838. 5] Minton Hollins& Co. And Minton& Co brands were used on tiles contemporaneously in the nineteenth century, catalogues, letterheads and advertising wares show Minton& Co in conjunction with Minton Hollins& Co as late as 1912. Floor and buff clay majolica wall tiles post 1868 may bear the legend Minton& ... moreCo which was apparently gradually phased out presumably as the dies wore out, groups of tiles from installations marked with both Minton& Co and Minton Hollins& Co are quite common. When the partnership was dissolved in 1868 when the company split in to Minton Hollins& Co the tile company the remaining china and pottery company apprently continued trading as Herbert Minton& Co until 1873 when it became Mintons Ltd. Campbell started making tiles contrary to the agreement and Hollins sued. The court found in favour of Hollins who received a large sum in settlement from Campbell. Wonderful early Mintons tile with young woman carrying a jug over her shoulder. This brown transferwere tile is in great shape! There are no discoloration problems. The color is vivid throughout the tile, sorry about the glare on a few of the photos, the glazing is in excellent condition) There is extremely minor wear to the very edge of the tile on the upper left side, but you really have to look close to notice it at all, it may have been there in the making. For sale is a Minton tile showing a barn yard scene from the Country Living series that dates from approximately 1885. The tile was designed and engraved by William Wise and has a cream background with brown engraving. The tile is 6" x 6" and is wrapped in an antique wire trivet frame. I believe this is earthenware with a transfer-printed decoration. Unfortunately. I don't know which artist painted this one. This is not in perfect condition. Thick Antique Minton Encaustic Floor Tile Decorative Arts & Crafts salvage
The Minton company did the tile flooring in the US Capital building. Due to its thickness I believe this to be a flooring tile. Its just shy of 1" thick. The tile was salvaged from somewhere. It has tiny bits of mortar on it still and tiny chips including the corners. I showed one of the chips in the photos. I wish I knew where it came from. But hey this gives you a great opportunity to make up any story you want about its origin. The Minton company has been around since about 1798 and got started with encaustic floor tiles around 1845. The tile is 6" square, and weighs almost 3 lbs. The 3 colors must have been fired seperately because the surface colors have texture. Someone put little rubber pads on the corner so it could be used on a table as a decoration or a trivet.
