Antiques. Collectables, Paintings, Fine Ceramics and Glass 3 FRAMED 18 TH. CENTURY DUTCH DELFT MANGANESE TILES These three Dutch. Delft, manganese tiles are dated to around 1750. They make a superb set mounted in their frame. The ground is cream and design is in purplish brown colour. The scenes on the tiles are of the canal with windmill. Boats and farm or church with small designs in the corners. They are uniquely hand painted in this wonderfully naive style. The condition of all 3 tiles is particularly good for this age. There are a few frits and nibbles to the edge. Some crazing and the tile on the right is slightly brown on the top, this may be the result of old tobacco smoke. Each tile measures 13cm x 13 cm x 7mm(approximately) or 5¼ inches x 5¼ inches. The wooden frame measures just more than 17½ inches x 7½ inches. ... moreI have added more pictures to show the condition and thickness of the tiles out of the frame. I'm afraid the colour looks varied as I was having problems with my camera. Manganese is a mineral used since Egyptian times to stain glazes and bodies. The colour varies depending on the glaze. Lead glazes give a purplish brown colour. As with these tiles. Manganese mixed with iron in an alkaline glaze creates a rich black tone. Delftware tiles were very popular. Popular decorative motifs included landscapes and flowers. With smaller designs in each corner. In Britain early delftware copied the Dutch manganese palette. Earthenware, 6 inches square. It does not appear to be marked on the reverse. Condition: There is an old chip. Roughly.25 by.125 inches, near the upper right corner. There are a few miniscule chips at the edges. There is some slight overall crazing. Surface dirt and frit on the sides and back. This handsome English art pottery tile by Mintons is colored in greens. Golds, and browns. Part of the series depicting scenes from various plays by William Shakespeare, it is entitled THE TEMPEST I- II. The tile depicts the scene when the shipwrecked Prospero beckons his spirit Ariel. They measure 4 3/8” square. They are a speckled beige and the color in the pictures is pretty close to the actual color. Some of the tiles have minor chipping on the back edges(very little. Solon and Schemmel Tile Co. San Jose California S& S 1920-1936 Albert Solon(1887-1949) immigrated from England to the U.S. in 1912. He studied at(later San Jose State University) He was employed as the pottery director at a tuberculosis sanitorium in Fairfax. Before moving to San Jose and teaching ceramics at the San Jose Normal School. 1] In 1920. He joined with Schemmel to found S&S tiles[ 1] 2] Solon designed the tiles and Schemmel headed the business. Both men lived in Willow Glen during the 1930s and 40s. Their work for Willow Glen sites included Willow Glen Theater(demolished) and the façades of homes on Telfer Avenue. Kotenberg Avenue and Willow Glen Way. 1] Schemmel retired in 1936 and Solon joined up with Paul Larkin. This tile matches the other I have listed as#1 however this has a small chip out of 1 corner and is priced a little cheaper. This auction is for one 8" x 9-3/4" Delft Blue Wall Plaque/Tile. Produced by Joost Thooft& LaBouchere, impressed mark on reverse) De Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles. The artwork is after Dutch artist, Jan Vrolyk. The subject is a pasture scene with three cows grazing near a cow pond in the foreground and a fourth cow grazing in the background with a farmer close by. I checked the Royal Delft site on the internet and found the following information about the letters and numbers on the back: the"393" is an internal company code; the"F" is the painter's initial; and the"AC" denotes the year code of its production, 1907. Condition: at the top of the plaque on the front. There are three areas of damage where edge pieces of the picture are missing. At the top edge on the back of the tile there are two ... morevery tiny chips where the tile may have once been toe nailed into a frame, as I have seen other examples displayed this way. With this pieces, however, there was no frame when we received it. There is overall crazing on both the front and back. Up for your consideration is this lot of rare salvaged Victorian Arts& Crafts1880's fireplace tiles. This auction is for the 3 tiles with a glazed motled surface in shades of dark greens and golds. All are marked on the back with the symbols for the International Tile Company from Brooklyn. New York, 1883-1891. The tiles were found in a wooden box in an out building of a farm house in Morganville, New Jersey. The 3 tiles that measure 2 1/4 by 2 1/4 inches. They are each about 1/2 of an inch thick. Overall. They are in fair condition with some edge chips on a couple and grout on the edges of some and surface wear. The International Tile Company was actually formed in 1883 by sons of Irish and British nobility who brought all of the equipment and tile artisans over. They later sold it to an American coffee company who ran it until it ... moreclosed in about 1891. The building was then used by the Vitrified Tile Company. Vint age" Tile"Haus Luttingen" 3 Tiles in Excellent Condition. Made in Germany. Each tile is 5 7/8" x 5 7/8" Two of the tiles are marked in a diamond shape with R on top X on the left I in the middle Q on the right side and K on the bottom. I do not know who it is made by. I know that in Germany the diamond mark shows the date, year, month and bundle. If this is correct these tiles are from the 1800"s. The other tile is marked with 5 under it 3 on the right side is 85 on the bottom its say's W/Germany. On the top of the tile it has the word Steuler? Each tile is wrapped in a plastic frame, two are not glued in the plastic the third on is. The color is a cream with a brownish red. No chips. No cracks. Very good condition. Posted with

Antique 3 Beautiful Fr. Courting Scenes on Tile w/Brass Frames; Ea 1900's
These are very beautiful hand painted tile copies of Antionne Watteau(1684-1721) romantic courting scenes. The framed tiles are extremely well made. As they have survived the test of time quite wonderfully. These scenes all bear the artists signature on the bottom right hand side(see photo 5) There is a set of 3 plaques 2 oval, and 1 round; each with lovely bow shaped brass frames. They are all completely brass covered in the back, and have an attached ring for hanging. The 3 pieces present in excellent condition with no flaws or defects. There is no paint loss or any other visual marring. These are quite exceptional romantic scenes for which Watteau was most well known for. In total they weigh 2 and a 1/4 pounds. The ovals measure 4 in by 5 and 6/8 in, and the round plaque is 5 and 1/2 in wide. Pieces such as these are made to admire and ... moreenjoy. I am quite certain that collectors and enthusiasts of French courting scenes, as well as the art of Watteau, will covet a set of plaques such as these. Here are three 6" square tiles from J& J G Low Art Tile Works with a copyright date of 1881 on the back. The pattern is of leaves and when held in the light pick up various colors. These come from a colllector and are in excellent condition with no cracks but have some light chipping on the back edges. Not the front. They came from an estate in the Northern Detroit Michigan/ Port Huron area- from a house commissioned in design by the Pewabic Tile Company in the 1900 to 1920's timeframe. The Karlson Art Tile Book(page added) shows the blue and creamware design of a flower- in similar color and artistry- as these Nursery Rhyme Mother Goose Theme tiles. Clay and art is definitely that of EARLY PEWABIC. The estate said the bathroom wall had these tiles mixed with an assortment of plain and floral tiles. Which aligns with the Karlson book on Page 244. Region 3 Edition. SIZE: 3" inches square. CONDITION: Very nice. No cracks or hairlines, ... morejust the commonalities with early installation, they are all very nice!
