Maw & Co. Relief Tile Classic Woman Looking in Mirror Antique Victorian Framed
This nicely designed tile is a little gem. 4" x 8" It is an excellent example of good British relief sculpture. The frame just hugs the edges and the resulting object has nice depth.The classical woman, Greek or Roman, seems to be in a window or doorway. The frame is 1 1/2 inches deep. The gold trim adds to the illusion of depth. The tile can be removed from the frame by peeling some tape and pulling out some pins.

Also known as the American Encaustic Tile Company was founded in 1874 by E. H. Hall and began tile production under the name of Fischer and Lansing in Zanesville Ohio. This sale is for one set of 20 authentic 1940s or 50s vintage ceramic border tiles in vivid blue from the MOSAIC Tile Co. This 20 piece tile set extends 10 feet long. These tiles measure 1-inch wide x 6 inches long by about 1/4 inch thick. I'm starting this sale with 5 sets of 20. The blue glaze is especially sumptuous and there is some crazing. Offered for bifd is an English tile made by Minton The tile is in good condition There is no damage to the top glazed portion of the tile There are a few minor flakes along the bottom edge which cannot be seen when it is lying flat. Up for your consideration is this lot of rare salvaged Victorian 1880's fireplace tiles. They have a textured mottled finish in different shades of green with browns and gold's. All are marked on the back with the symbols for the International Tile Company from Brooklyn. New York, 1883-1891. The tiles were found in a wooden box in an out building of a farm house in Morganville, New Jersey. There are 24 tiles that measure 3 by 3 inches; there are 47 tiles that measure 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 inches; and there are 4 tiles that measure 2 1/4 by 2 1/4 inches. One of which is a rosette. They are each about 1/2 of an inch thick. Overall, they are in good condition with some edge chips on a couple and grout on the edges of some. Up for auction is a pair of antique tiles. The tiles have been reclaimed from an old factory that was built in the early 1900s. The tiles are white and they are from the American Encaustic Tile Company. The back of the tiles read as follows: PATENT GRIP BACK A.E.T. CO. The tiles measure about 2.1 inches by 4.1875 inches The tiles show a little bit of wear on the edges and corners but otherwise are in spectacular shape. For auction is a lot of 20 Subway tiles. That were made by American Encaustic Tile Co. They are vintage but I'm not sure how old they are. They measure 6 inches long, 3 inches wide, and 1/4 of an inch thick. Theyre solid with no cracks, but have some bits taken off the edges, and the backs of them still have some concrete on them. They are clean, however. This is all reclaimed tile. The glaze has some crazing on some. Look over my pictures carefully. Please check out my other unique auctions that I have listed this week. American Encaustic Tiling Co - Limited 6 x 6 High Relief Majolica Tile
Between the years of 1879 and 1936. The American Encaustic Tiling Company Limited produced tiles with mosaic, comedic, nature, wildlife and human subject matter. Many of these tiles were manufactured with embossed motifs which today are more commonly referred to as relief, low relief and high relief tiles. This particular example is a 6" X 6" tile which were used most commonly on fireplace mantle facings and kitchen splashes. This 1/2" thick, high relief tile, consists of mauve/burgundy glaze and is fired with a high gloss finish. It has a swirled and ribbed line motif all of which variate in length and thickness and emanate from a center core surrounded by pebble like shapes. It has sharp and crisp detail and the relief gives it substantial depth. On the back is the maker's mark with raised letters designating A.E. Tile ... moreCo. Limited. There is also a small amount of left over mortar. There are two tiny"nibbles" on the face that do not overtly affect the overall display. This sale is for 4 authentic 1930s vintage ceramic border tiles forming an arrow from the American Encaustic Tile Co. or AETCO. This tile set was left over from the Philadelphia subway system installation of the early 1930s. They measure 4-1/4" x 4-1/4" and are 1/2" thick. I sold several sets like this on ebay many years ago and saved this last set. In best condition of all, until now. Check out the full set of AETCO tiles I've listed that spell out LOGAN from the Logan subway station. These are not modern replicas. I got them many years ago from an old tile store in Philadelphia. Now long-defunkt, that still had thousands of old, unsold, never-installed tiles from the 1920s through the 1950s. These tiles are in virtually perfect, unused condition. This tile is 6" x 6" and it is 1" thick. It has round pieces of cork adhered to it. I am guessing it was used as a trivet at home point. Please view the photos to determine condition for yourself. It remains sturdy and strong. It is also heavy! Minton& Co c.1828- 1868 commercial production from circa 1835. Tile making managed by partner Michael Daintry Hollins from 1840 onwards whence the brand name. Minton, Hollins, Co. was adopted. Michael Hollins is recorded as working in the factory from at least 1838. 5] Minton Hollins& Co. And Minton& Co brands were used on tiles contemporaneously in the nineteenth century, catalogues, letterheads and advertising wares show Minton& Co in conjunction with Minton Hollins& Co as late as 1912. Floor and buff clay majolica wall tiles post 1868 may bear the legend Minton& ... moreCo which was apparently gradually phased out presumably as the dies wore out, groups of tiles from installations marked with both Minton& Co and Minton Hollins& Co are quite common. Michael Hollins became a partner in Minton& Co in 1840 and Colin Campbell in 1849. Whilst Hollins managed the tile business Campbell managed the china business and had little involvement in the tile business. 2] Upon the death of Herbert Minton in 1858 Michael Hollins became the senior partner and Colin Campbell the junior partner. When the partnership was dissolved in 1868 when the company split in to Minton Hollins& Co the tile company the remaining china and pottery company apprently continued trading as Herbert Minton& Co until 1873 when it became Mintons Ltd. Campbell started making tiles contrary to the agreement and Hollins sued. The court found in favour of Hollins who received a large sum in settlement from Campbell. Following the court judgment Minton, Hollins, Co and Mintons Ltd both had the right to use the name Minton& Co for their speciality products. Ohio from 1894 to 1967. Mosaic was the largest tile producer in the world at the height of its history. This tile had the transfer added by another company that had bought up left over inventory when Mosaic went out of business. Nice covered wagon picture. Flint Faience Company Art Deco Arts&Crafts Tile American Encaustic I've collected old tile to use in my tile collages and never knew what this one was until I did a little research.what a fascinating history. This company was founded to keep the kilns going during spark plug production. This particular tile is so unusual. It looks more like something experimental. It appears to be hand painted and weighs almost one pound. It is a square with a side of 4.25" It is missing some paint and you can see the artist pencil sketch under the colored pattern. It very whimsical and care free with more of an Art&Crafts look about it. It does have an indentation on one edge of the back side and this is definitely in the make. I see no chips. Cracks or problems in the structure of the tile. It is a beautiful blue/grey color and the decorations ... moreare a bit unusual. Please see all of the photos. Breathtaking tile of a cherub playing a harp. In the shade or a deep amber. No markings on the back, but believe Majolica type Encaustic Tile Co. Measures almost 8.75" tall and 4.25" across.
