The Ambete are part of the same group as the Kota and Punu and share with them a cult surrounding ancestral bones. The reliquary figures are particularly interesting. They are usually quite large. Columnar in shape and have a hatch at the back. It is sometimes claimed that bones are kept in this compartment. In all the examples I have seen, the space available is much smaller than the reiquaries used by the Fank, Kota, etc. I am inclined to think, that apart from some fragments, this compartment was chiefly intended to receive Bilongo- magical substances to keep the guardian powerful- rather than human remains. The latter would have been stored in a more secure basket beside the guardian. Interestingly. The hatches of these two contain a large clam shell, fastened in place with a nail and set in a bed of raffia, apparently a fetish object, leaving little room for anything else. The figures are quite large at 29" tall and wear necklaces. The faces are extremely distictive. Lozenge-shaped, with a central brow beneath which are smallish features designed to scare away potential thieves of the precious bones. Rows of teeth give the mouth bite. This is a rare and powerful figure. Seldom offered for sale on eBay.

Depicting herders from India. To me, it has a very Turkish/ Ottoman design. These two rectangular pieces of camel bones have been professionally double-matted in a deep sage green mat over a burgundy mat, and placed in a spectacular new gilded frame. The two painted camel bones are very old- I don't know the date they were made, but it was before the 1850's, according to my research. The style of painting is not modern, but well into the 1800's. The top bone has a painting of what appears to be goat herders in a semi-desert scene. The colors are softly applied, not like the modern reproductions that are so vibrant they look like cartoons. The second panel of camel bone depicts men on horses and a man leading camels laden with carpets, and he is carrying one, as well. This bone is painted in the same manner as the first- soft and realistic, not cartoonish. The camel bones are newly framed in a high-quality, Oriental-inspired gilded frame, perfect for the subject matter. The glass is perfect(there was some sticker residue I cleaned off after the pictures were taken) The reverse has been professionally backed and a wire hanger with an envelope attached(evidently the wall-hanging apparatus) There is a foil sticker reading: Galleria Custom Framing/ 3619 Ingersoll/ Des Moines, Iowa 50312/ 515) 274-3266.
