Therefore, it is extremely rare to find one let alone five of them. These Chinese MOP gaming chips were hand carved with unique patterns on both sides. No two are the same. On the front side of the chip. The center is decorated with two or three figures, dressed in traditional chinese gown, talking or socializing near rails of balusters in a garden situated among houses, pagodas, rocks, trees, and bushes. The outer rim is reticulated/ pierced with carved tree branches and leaves and serrated edge. On the back side of the chip, the center is decorated with a blank circle flanked by two birds on a land full of trees, houses, rivers or even mountains. I found it very difficult to photograph these and bring out the lovely lustre of Mother of Pearl and the details of the carving/ engraving. They are beautifully made of Mother of Pearl and beautifully decorated with one flower on one side and two flowers on the other. Each measures approximately: Circular; 3.1 cm. diameter. Oval; 3.7 cm. by 2.3 cm. Lozenge shape; 5.4 cm. by 1.7 cm. They are in quite good condition for their age and only require a delicate clean. A beautiful set of 33 antique hand carved mother of pearl gaming counters from the mid 18th Century through to the mid 19th Century Carved in China from the nacre of oyster shells for the European market. This set consists of: 11 carp counters dating from around 1750 and carved with scales to one side and billing birds to the other 11 shuttle counters dating from around 1800 and depicting pagodas to one side 11 round counters dating from around 1800 and also depicting pagodas to one side All in very good antique condition with minimal wear. These two antique gaming tokens are of Chinese origin and have lovely etched decoration on both sides with cross-hatched backgrounds. They are made from mother of pearl. With serrated edges. One side features an oriental scene in the centre(different on each token) with a flower to either side, surrounded by geometric patterned borders. The other side has a roudel in the centre with a letter inside, which we believe to be a J, again with a flower to either side, surrounded by the same geometric patterned borders. We would estimate them to date from the mid-nineteenth century. The tokens are rectangular.
