Presented here for your consideration is a early 19c Chinese carved and pierced table screen stand of HongMu wood. This stand was produced in China during the first half of the 19c or around c1820 to c1830s or so and is designed to hold a jade. Hardstone, embroidery, cinnabar or porcelain plaque amoungst other materials that would be framed to slide into the slots in both side standards or holders. This is one of the earlier ones I have had in a long time and is carved very nicely of lotus flower and scrolling vines in raised openworked reserves with ruyi symbols carried through to even all(4) brackets which many of these early stands are missing as they are easily broken or lost. The raised standards are finished in a chilong or baby dragon head at the very tops and the stand sits on heavy looking thick shaped feet and the reverse side is ... moredone in the same manner but without the relief carving as is in the front. Condition overall is very good with some expected surface wear and some edge bruising where at one time someone has touched up a few areas and to one side there are both brackets that have been apparently broken and re-glued but is not bad at all but the central sections are in good order. Sizes: Total Width 17" from outside foot to foot) x inner width between the upright standards where the framed plaque would go is 13-5/8" Wide plus the grove which is 1/4" x 1/4" Deep x Overall Height is 12" and just the upright standards are 6" in Height. VERY FINE 18C/19C CHINESE HONGMU PLATE CHARGER STAND W EARLY CARVED RUYI DESIGNS
For auction is presented a very fine 18c/19c Chinese carved hongmu plate or charger stand with some of the finest workmanship and details found on one of these early stands. This stand was produced in China in the later part of the 18c to the early 19c and has been very well cared for as it has only minor age wear. This is a good size stand being 13-1/2" high to the top of the rear support and has a wide and high front with a slight inward curve which will hold and display a plate. Charger or tray up to 14" diameter and possibly a bit larger. There are 4 individual pieces that comprise this awesome stand and each one has a carving treatment that compliments the other and the color is a rich looking reddish brown with a beautiful 200 year old surface patina that glows from years of care and polishing. It is the front area that is ... moreso impressive and this early style of raised relief carving is in such high demand as this was the style that would have held the finest designs in Chinese export porcelain during that era having short and long scrolls, pierced openings, shaped edges, raised ruyi designs and two ogee style feet. The rear standard is less elaborate but still shows the classic scrolls and ruyi designs and shaped edges as in the front panel and even the support bracket connecting the rear standard to the bottom brace shows classic design elements that continue to make this stand one of the finest you will encounter. Condition is excellent having only very minor wear and a couple of small edge dents as seen in the image of the top side edge of the bottom brace which are really insignificant for a stand that is over 200 years old and other than that it is in superb condition. This stand was produced in China sometime around the last quarter of the 19c or about the c1880s most likely for export to the West. This particular stand at first look appears like a basic key style footed type. But when you look closer this is a superbly executed display stand produced from quality rosewood stock with wonderful graining and a deep reddish brown tone. The top has a raised interior circular panel which is nicely carved and pierced with a central lotus flower surrounded with scrolling vines and the outside edge has a delicate greek key pattern design with a low profile collar that sits upon a continuous single leaf border then you have the skirt or apron which has superb openwork panels ... morecontaining single key fret designs, ruyi heads and extremely delicate scrolls and stringing that even overlap one another. These panels are then separated by 5 alternating feet with all designs surrounded by raised edges. This was extremely dirty and dusty from being stored away in a open box so I only gently cleaned the surfaces with warm water ... moreand a natural bristle brush then polished the finish with a soft cotton cloth with no waxes or enhancers used as I did purposely take the images in a more direct light source so that all potential bidders could see the color and tight grain with very smooth surfaces that are known with Zitan wood. The edges of all leaves have natural curling realistic appearances along with insect holes in the larger leaves, stems and thin delicate grass like leaves in which I could go on and on but I will let the photos speak for the stand, but again what you are seeing is simply what this stand would have looked like the day it was ready for market other than of course slight changes from age and handling. Condition is excellent and I can find no problems what so ever and with many sellers thinking they have Zitan objects there is really only a small percentage of stands made of this species so this is a rare opportunity for the collector. For auction is presented this late 19c Chinese carved and pierced plate or porcelain charger display stand made of most likely HongMu wood out of a nice thick stock. This stand was produced in China around the c1880s or there abouts for the export market and is in a generous size to display up to a 12" diameter plate. Tray or charger. The main front display piece is very well carved in a total openwork design style of lotus flowers and stylized scrolls surrounded by a smooth border frame with a ruyi design on the bottom and turned up scrolls for the feet and sides with phoenix heads at each of the top ends. The rear part of the stand is again a nice thick piece of shaped wood but is a different species of hardwood than the front having small cross pieces for support and the top groove for the plate allows it to sit very nicely against ... morethe back support to give a good upright display. Chinese bronze covered urn form censor with Foo Dog finial and dragon form handles. The urn measures 10 inches or 25.4 cm high. And is 7 ¾ inches or 19.5 cm wide from handle to handle. The urn features 3 figural feet of elongated faces which support bulbous form body. around the body of the urn are bas relief cranes flying in the sky with engraved clouds around them. On the side of the urn are 2 dragon form handles. At the bottom of the inside of the urn is an opening for the incense to escape. Up for auction is this fine old Chinese carved panel of five characters. Some atop a bridge and all beneath a leafy tree. Lots of fine pierced detail and certainly hand carved and gilt. There is a red painted backdrop and the depth created shows the quality craftsmanship that went into the piece. I was told this was a 19c or older carving though the framing may have been done a little later. It is mounted in a green cloth wooden frame with copper Chinese detail on the hanger. 18C/19C CHINESE ZITAN OR HONGMU WOOD LOTUS STAND 4 JADE CUP OR VASE CARVING
I am very please to offer here this week a splendid old antique Chinese carved and pierced Zitan or HongMu wood stand which would be used for displaying a libation cup or possibly marriage cup or vase in a jade or other precious material with the stand itself depicting a wonderful complete lotus plant. This fine wood stand was produced in China with my guess of manufacture being around the last quarter of the 18c or the first quarter of the 19c and would have had a superbly crafted object along with it. The stand is of a darker brown to black coloring and I don't want to say 100% that it is Zitan but this type of stand is when the better wood was used so I am saying it could be a darker stained Hong Mu. But in any case a high level stand for sure. The stand was worked to resemble a lotus plant in full bloom including both large and smaller ... moreleaves as well as the long thin curly leaves as well as stems, open flower heads, buds and seed pods with the top having another lotus leaf pad for the objects foot with an incised flower in the center. The workmanship and details are as good as they get with nicely upturned edges to the leaves and tiny details to the seed pods. Condition is excellent with very minor rubs to a few edges and I included a close up that shows a tight age split to one stem but almost invisible in the hand otherwise no real problems of any sort as it maintains a great patinized sheen and was not waxed only wiped off with a soft buff. For auction we have here a superb and seldom seen style and shape of a 19c Chinese hardwood display stand finely carved and pierced with the top performed in a openwork style depicting a dragon amoungst scrolls. This stand was produced in China during the second half of the c1800s and appears that it could have been used for a similar shaped censor or an object having four feet and today it can be used for the same type item or a object containing a flat oval foot rim. The stand is worked from one solid piece of dense and dark hardwood with an even darker coloring put on to give it a ebonized look and has taken on a wonderful surface patina and sheen. The top being in a oval shape with the center area performed in a openwork design depicting a dragon twisting around amoungst scrolls with a smooth boarder having four shallow foot indents and ... morethe outside edge done in a continuous raised relief bead design with a short collar underneath having nice patterned shaped piercings on top of the skirt or apron finished in another good openwork effort having four ruyi style knee and bottom foot separated by alternating panels of scrolling with all being chased with raised outlines. The underside is smooth and well finished with the condition overall being excellent with no chips. Cracks, losses or repairs only having some wear to the dark surface finish to the top and a bit on the outside edges otherwise the stand is about as good as you get for this age. FINE 19C CHINESE CARVED QUARTZ LOTUS BUD WATER DROPPER TRANSLUCENT WALLS & STAND
I am pleased to offer this fine old carving from my private collection after having this for the better of 15 years. This is a 19c Chinese carved quartz water dropper or water drop designed as a lotus bud and stem positioned on a wood stand. This quartz water dropper was produced in China in the mid 19c for the Chinese domestic market as I purchased this from the owner that moved to the USA from Shanghai and it was her mother's piece before. The more one studies this antique carving the more impressive it becomes as the outside work is both carved and pierced replicating a lotus flower bud with attached stem and small cluster of seeds sitting on sections of lotus stalks. The details and workmanship is extremely fine showing the ridges on the bud and the individual seeds in the seed grouping and the stone color selected for this is called'Smokey ... moreQuartz' showing the darker and medium grays starting at the spout and ending in almost clear materials at the very back and if the inside would be clean and free of dirt and dust I believe the walls would be very translucent. The very most impressive thing about the piece overall is the hollowed out inside that would hold the water as the walls are maybe 1/16" thick and was performed in that thickness all over the entire inside which I am not sure how the master carver could have pulled that off in this material but it is a true feat of fine workmanship. Condition remains perfect with no chips. Cracks, losses or repairs and the stand is not original to the piece but is also in good condition with only a small circle on top from a previous item that faded around it otherwise great. 18c/19c CHINESE CARVED BOXWOOD SCHOLAR'S BRUSH STAND OR REST CHILONG & LINGZHI
For your consideration we have here a rare 18c/19c Chinese carved boxwood brush or ring stand or rest decorated with a chilong surrounded with ling-zhi fungus. This fine object was produced in China in the late 18c to the early 19c with the most beautiful patinized surfaces and coloring and was most likely used for the Scholar's table or desk. This is a interestingly carved rest that could have easily been used for a ring rest which the ring would have fit over the baby dragon's head and also for leaning/holding brushes as well. The stand is about 4-1/4" long and one side contains a full chilong(baby dragon) with a great face with horns crawling amongst ling-zhi fungus and has that tactful feel when in hand from 100s of years of being touched and held by human hands that has built a very thick and rich surface patina. Condition ... moreis excellent with no chips. Breaks, losses or repairs only one tiny age split and one tight age crack line on the surface but they give it the character and honest age wear to this amazing object. IMPORTANT 19C CHINESE CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER STAND SIGNED BY QING ARTIST
I am very pleased to offer this fabulous and important 18c/19c Chinese carved cinnabar lacquer display stand in a good large size of Imperial type quality and fully signed by the artist and his shop during the Qing Dynasty. I had one of my very good clients examine the underside with its incised Chinese insciption and her and her family were able to read the old text which says that this cinnabar piece was produced by the'Lu Qui Sheng' artist and gives the location of his shoppe and I am not sure how the stand arrived here in the states but I fell that the stand was produced sometime in the late 1700s to the very early 1800s. The quality of both the cinnabar material and the carving techniques most certainly belong to a very good artist of the period as the lacquer color is a deep dark red and I have seen this color but only a few ... moretimes on also high quality early pieces and this is produced the same way that any of the earlier cinnabar pieces were having a wood body with 300 to 350 individual coats of cinnabar lacquer to attain the depth the carver did and is not a piece of wood that has had the design carved into the wood with a very thin lacquer finish on top that is seen in many lacquer stands but is definitely the real genuine thing. The top of the stand shows the center most area performed with perfect incising of lotus scrolls and flowers with a key fret boarder to the outside edge of the center raised area the carved outside top edge of the stand shows more lotus flowers. Leaves and vines in a continuous pattern with the side edge done in a very fine deep key fret boarder which directly underneath the lip is a lappet design over top the collar which has had a treatment geometric lines in a diamond pattern and single leaves. The top portion of the apron shows again the continuous lappet design which is above the side apron that have wonderful carvings of pairs of full bodied chilongs facing a lotus flower with a type of face inside the flower head all on a perfectly executed geometric ground. These were made during later part of 1800's to early part of 1900's. These fit into bamboo cage and interlock with wooden stick to hold the dish on the side of the bamboo cage. The round one with a flat bottom is is 1 3/8" diameter and 3/4" deep. I hope the photos will show the detail- looks like a lady or person doing something. The Urn Shaped one is 1 3/8" diameter and 1 1/8" deep and also has two characters. The wood portion is 3/4" x 1/2" x 1/2" No chips cracks or repairs and minimal wear. The one on the right is not crazed on the outside(looks like it) What you are seeing is just the design.
