Royal British Berkshire Regiment Cap Badge for the Chinese Opium War of 1840 to 1843. In 1840 the 49th Royal Berkshire Regiment was sent from India to take part in the"Opium War" with China. Spending two years in China fighting in six major battles at Canton, Amoy, Chusan, Chinhae, Chapoo and the Heights of Chin Keang Foo. On 18 May 1842 the 49th took part in a joint attack with the 18th Regiment on Joss House, Chapu, which was defended by a large number of Tartars. The commander, Colonel Tomlinson was killed. This rare China trade/ opium war letter dated"London March 21 1840" was written by John Cryder to William Wetmore in New York. The 8 x 10 inch letter written on vellum style paper has a"J.Whatman 1840" watermark. The letter was sent from London to New York aboard the ship"Gladiator" In this letter Cryder is talking about the opium war he writes: the China affair is likely to be a lay story unless the Chinese knock under at once and submit to the hard terms John Bull wishes to impose on them. At a young age he moved to Middletown, Connecticut to live with his aunt and uncle, attend school, and work in his uncle's shop. In 1823, Wetmore sailed as the firm's supercargo on the ship Lion, bound for the port of Valparaiso, Chile. He was shipwrecked on the way, but this misfortune soon became an opportunity. Wetmore joined in a partnership with a Valparaiso import merchant named Richard Alsop, who was originally from Middletown. The firm Alsop& Wetmore conducted trade with the United States and England with great success. In 1825, the partners joined Philadelphia native John Cryder, creating the firm Alsop, Wetmore& Cryder. But could also be hung from a chain and worn as either a charm, necklace or fob. and of course it could still be used to scrape out a pipe bowl It is a total of 3 1/4 inches long. The item is in the shape of a knife and has been hand chased on both sides. The knife has been acid tested and tests for solid silver. It has a total weight of approx. 2.9 grams. This extremely rare two page China trade/ Opium Trade stampless folded letter was written by Joseph Archer in Macau. China. The letter is addressed to"William S. Wetmore Canton" and also has two forwarding addresses in manuscript. The 8 x 10 inch two page letter is dated"Macao September 21, 1834" This interesting letter was written at an important historic time in Chinese history when the British sent Lord Napier to China to seek a settlement between the British sea Traders and the Cantonese authorities. The British were trying to expand the opium trade while the Chinese authorities were trying to eradicate it. Three weeks later Lord Napier died of fever at Macaou. In this letter Joseph Archer is concerned that Lord Napier is going to cause major difficulties for Wetmore and Company. Apparently he had ships he was trying ... moreto get to Whampoa but was afraid they would be intercepted by Napier. The letter starts: Your several favors of the 18th reached me this morning- Capt. Stoddard is at the- Brig Blow I have written requesting him to come over here to confer with him respecting the ships going up to Whampoa. I should have you over but wished to wait your reply to mine of the 18th. The letter continues with shipping news giving the names of ships arriving in China from Batvia and Bombay. He also discusses market prices including the"Calcutta Market" The most important part of the letter is where he references Lord Napier and talks about the problem of getting the ships to Whampoa. Various opinions are entertained here as to a speedy settlement of the existing difficulties- Beale gives it as his opinion that the Frigates are ordered down before his lordship leaves it will surely lead to further demands on the part of the Chinese. CIVIL-WAR BOTTLES! PRIVY-DUG! OPIUM VIALS & PONTIL MEDICINE! 6 ANTIQUE BOTTLES!
These six bottles date from the early 1850's to the late 1860's. From left to right in photo#1; The first bottle stands 4 7/8" tall and is 7/8" x 1 1/2" oval. This aqua medicine bottle is embossed along the base on both sides and it reads: J. P. PRESTON- BOSTON. It has a damaged flare-lip with a open-pontil base and shows a lot of iridescence from being in the ground a very long time. The second bottle is a large opium bottle with an applied straight collar top and it stands 5 1/8" tall and is 1 1/8" wide at base. The third is a clear drug vial that has some of the original content inside and it stands 3 7/8" tall. I used a modern cork to prevent from losing the contents. The next item is an early opium vial and it stands 3 5/8" tall and is only 5/8" wide. The fifth one is a very early aqua ... morepontil medicine bottle and it has issues on the flared-lip. It is embossed on the two sides and reads: DR. S.S. FITCH- 707 B.WAY. N. Y. The ancient little bottle is only 3 5/16" tall and 13/16" x 1 3/8" rectangle. The last one is a smaller aqua colored opium bottle and it stands 4 1/2" tall and is 7/8" wide at base. The two pontil bottles have a little damage and manufacturing imperfections on the lip, but the rest are in great privy-dug condition. Thanks!

There are a few areas that feel rough, which I believe was caused in the process of making this bottle. THE SMOKING OF OPIATES DURING THE CIVIL WAR WAS NOT UNUSUAL AND GIVEN TO SOLDIERS TO ALIVIATE THEIR PAIN. THIS WAS DURING A TIME WHEN NOT MUCH THOUGHT WAS GIVEN TO THE HORRIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF MOST MEDICAL POISON GIVEN TO SOLDIERS AS WELL AS CIVILIANS OF THE PERIOD.
