Antique Black Forest Book Rack - Extending - Folding - Book Ends
This is a Victorian Black Forest extending book rack from the late 19th century in excellent original condition. The hinges are tight. There is very little wear to the corners. It has acquired a gorgeous patina. Closed. The rack is 10.75" length; open 14.25" It's 5" deep and 4.25" high(the bear on pedestal portion is 3.75" The bears have their original glass eyes with no damage and are very finely carved. There is some wear to the leather handle and a few scuffs but other than that it’s in great shape. Push button latch functions well and the interior is clean. Exterior of case measures 13 1/2” w by 5” deep by 6 1/2” tall Not sure what it was originally used for. Inside has compartment with a silver hook clasp that measures 6 1/2” x 5 1/2” fits 4 x 5 film negatives nicely. perhaps a photographer’s accessory bag? The section next to it has cut-outs in the leather that look like it was intended to secure a sharp instrument. Writing utensil, doctor's supplies or maybe music reeds. The main compartment measures 13” by 5 1/2” There is s small 1/16” hole near the ... moretop on each side that looks like a small rod was once inserted to hold a retractable tray. so perhaps it was a mens travel case. This auction is for an unusual bit of Americana. ... moreA little pamphlet with the intriguing title, The Quack Doctor, originally sold for 15 cents. This is a vaudeville type one act play, published in the mid to late 19th century by"Fitzgerald Publishing Corporation; Successor to Dick& Fitzgerald. On the title page, we are told that this is a'Negro Farce, in One Act and One Scene, played first at the St. Louis Amphitheatre, March 1851(the last digit didn't print but we found that it was 1851 from a different source, which put a date of 1874 on this publication) Presented to C. White, Esq, May 1855. When we began to read the play inside. We were quite shocked at the language and depiction of characters, none of which would ever see the light of day today, but was part of the popular black face minstrel shows at the time. This pamphlet measures approx. 4.75" by 7.25" and is in very good to excellent condition. Though there is a small tear on the front cover on the edge, and a couple of other pages, and some minor wrinkling to some of the pages, not unexpected with something of this age. Up for auction is a Wonderful Antique Seth Thomas Black Adamantine Pillar Mantel Clock. Circa 18800-1900. The clock's dimensions are approximately; H- 11" W- 18" D- 7" The Case: The black Adamantine case is in excellent physical condition. The adamantine case is great condition. There is one small area on the left side with a little bit of adamantine loss. This is not visible and be no means is a distraction from the beauty of this clock. All of the brass ornamentation is original and very clean. The plastic pillars are original and in fine condition. There is a little bit of play with each of the pillars. The Dial/Face: Thezinc pan dial with paper face is original and in excellent physical condtion. The dial/face has a wonderful patina with little to none markings on it. The blue steel hands are original and very clean. ... moreThe Bezel: The brass bezel is clean and closes tightly to the case. The convex crystal/glass is clean and scratch free from what I can see. The glass is original to the clock. The Mechanism: The Seth Thomas 8 day time and strike spring driven mechanism has been cleaned and oiled in working order. The clock chimes the bell on the 1/2 hour and gong on the hour. The hammer was replaced with a new one and has a great sound. The sound resonates for a nice long time. The clock's dimensions are approximately; H- 20" W- 15.5" D- 5.5" The Case: The black case is in good physical condition. There are a few areas here and there that have some chips. Cracks, etc. I believe these areas are small and do not really distract from the beauty of this clock. The mother of pearl is all there and looks great. The Dial/Face: The porcelain dial/face is in excellent physical condition. I can not see and/or feel chips. Breaks, etc. There are some small scratches but again, nothing that I would consider distracting. The hands are original and in fine overall condition. This one was used for parades- has the hookups and is on wheels for easy use on paved roads. Works all the way ready for Santa and Mrs. Claus. Lovely for a photo prop for Santa. A very rare. Antique, 19th Century Shadow Box Framed Mourning Memorial of an African American Woman. The photo appears to be an old cabinet card or photo and the flowers are handmade out of cloth and wool yarn. The frame is pierced wood with gesso and gilding. This beautiful memorial measures approximately 16 3/4" high x 14 3/4" across x about 3 1/2" wide. It is in good condition. The flowers and tulle look a little dingy but for the age, it still looks great! ANTIQUE ORIGINAL BLACK LEATHER 17.5" ROUND SUITCASE, DARTMOUTH & LASELL, 1900-40
This 17.5" antique leather round suitcase was used by its original owner at LaSell College in 1926-1927. A LaSell label can be seen on the top as well as one for Dartmouth College where her father and brother attended. Other than some stitching that has come loose on the bottom. The suitcase is in good condition. The leather handle. Front latch, two side clasps, and back hinges are all secure and working. The beautiful blue print lining is not torn but is stretched and shows some staining from age and use. On the front the original owner’s initials M.N. are printed in gold and a tiny fragment of paper shows her address in Winchester. MA. This antique suitcase not only has weathered well. But it has held on to its history.
