The craftsmanship really is a work of art. With a coppery bell and a golden-brass base it has a gorgeous patina. The turning apparatus is in fine shape and is brass toned as well. This listing is for a used. Vintage door chime. I think that it was made by Edwards, but it does not have any maker's marks. It is a non-electric door bell. It works mechanically. There originally would have been a twist knob on the back side. It is missing. We tested it with a flathead screwdriver. It makes a Ding-Dong noise with a quick twist and release of the screwdriver. True-vintage. Shabby-chic condition. It has been painted several times over the years and you can see layers of blue. Brown and white paint. The paint has chips, cracks and is flaking. This Electric Bell Buzzer is in Good condition. Clean, with some paint on cover. It has been tested and works perfectly. Made in the USA. Please look at the photos and email with any questions. This was recently removed from a home built in 1947. It gives a very distinct ringer dinger sound- when you hear it, it puts a smile on your face! From the website Doorbells and Knockers Door Chime History- Edwards Edwards and Company Inc. Norwalk Connecticut and Montreal Canada. Founded in 1872 by Robert S. Edwards and David Rousseau. Finding solid info on the history of Edwards chime business has proven elusive. Which is a bit surprising as that company was a significant player in the industry. There is clear evidence that they had a well-developed musical door chime product as early as 1934. Specifically the evidence that I have is a sales sheet ... moredating from March 1935, noted as a replacement page for an earlier version dating from April 1934. The products depicted are two similar models of 2-note longbell chimes, one with a very deluxe cast brass cover. These products are important as they are to my knowledge the earliest production long bell chimes… clearly preceding any made by Rittenhouse and predating even the formation of Nutone. In addition, there is a sales sheet depicting a simple low cost 1- and 2- note bar chimes, dated August 1937, noted as replacing a page dated September 1936. This is significant as it predates patents filed by Rittenhouse for similar products, and probably undermines any claim by Nutone to have“invented” low cost chimes. By my observations. Edwards largely abandoned the fancy chime business in roughly 1960, but carried on in a big way but the security products market. Edwards and Company is known today as Edwards Signaling and Security Systems, maker of commercial security components, now a division of General Electric. Penn Antique Restoration. Vintage Brass/Steel Doorbell Ringer. Charming. Vintage doorbell and ringer salvaged from Western New York. The ringer is made of solid brass, and the bell and rod/spindle are made of steel. Originally. The cover of the bell was copper-plated, however, only traces of copper remain leaving its surface with a nice, distressed finish. The bell cover also has some pitting, which adds another distressed element to it's lovely design. There are a few small dents along the edges of the ringer plate. But otherwise all parts are in great shape with no breaks, cracks, chips, dents, or gouges. We oiled the inside of the bell to facilitate the movement of the gears. An antique circa 1860's mechanical pull chain doorbell marked"Abbe's Patent" The brass bell is approximately 4" in diameter. It's in very good condition showing moderate wear. It's in good working order and rings strongly(a chain or string should be attached to the bottom of the mechanism to make it easier to ring the bell) The attached images give an accurate impression of the cosmetic condition of the doorbell.
