VERY SCARCE* OLD ANTIQUE 1890's WHIPPLE IRON DOOR KNOB PLATE. THUMB LATCH AND HINGES This offering is for an antique door handle back plate. Thumb latch and hinges. The back side of the door plate is marked by the maker"WHIPPLE MFG CO" The door plate measures app. 10 3/4" long by 2½" at the widest point. The hinges are a standard pair measuring app. 3½" square having a total of six mounting hoes on each set. The entire grouping is made of cast iron with an aesthetic pattern and the condition is used and as found as seen in our photo's above and below. The door back plate is complete with the original thumb latch, there is no handle. All of the pieces have remains of a white painted surface and some surface rust that should easily clean. I am listing a lot of various antique hardware items in the next few days that I have been collecting over the years from my various picking expeditions. Antique Hand Forged Iron Gate Latch - Thumb Latch Lever for Primitive Gate, Door
Offered for Auction: Old 19th or very Early 20th Century Primitive Gate or Door Latch Lever with Mounted Housing. The latch was crudely hand crafted probably by a farmer to suit a purpose rather than an aesthetic need. The lever has an elongated thumb pad and longer shaft with 90 degree angled lifting end. I do not know exactly how the lever was mounted. It is balanced when it is in a vertical rather than horizontal position so it might have hung on the side of a post instead of its top. The pivot is a bolt with a hammered end and the shaft is a bit longer than the lever's width so there is a little play from side to side. Condition: Fair given its age and use. The latch pivots freely. There is surface rust and discoloration. Scratches, dings and nicks and the way it was forged is very irregular. The edges of the mounting bracket are ... morerough and they are different lengths. A nice vintage antique cast iron latch door handle with latch. The condition is used with some of original black paint and some area of light rust that could be cleaned. It is 3-1/8 inches long(not including extension on bar) 1-3/8 inches wide and with a 5/8 inch projection at the knob. The latch requires a 2-3/8 inch long x 3/8 x 3/8 inch slot in door for locking bar. There are four counter sunk holes for attaching. No screws are provided. The condition is excellent with no beads. Old reproduction Tulip Full Bloom Suffolk thumb latch with parts door hardware--
A very nice old reproduction Tulip Bud Suffolk thumb latch with parts. The latch could be 19th of 20th century. Made by a very talented blacksmith. The upper cusp is a fully formed tulip bud. The latch is 10 1/4" long. The upper cusp is welded to the handle as opposed to being all one piece. The thumb piece is curved and is 3 1/54" long. The latch bar is 9 1/2" long The latch bar has a raised end-beveled on all 4 sides-a Penn characteristic. The parts are reproduction and are original to the latch. I recently bought a collection of Penn hardware- and there were several of these latches in the collection-So I do have a few others- Ask questions if interested- Watch for my other early iron items.
