Sioux Chiefs - a folio size re-strike gravure from copper plate by E.S.Curtis
Sioux Chiefs Plate 79 from Portfolio 3 of The North American Indian by Edward S. Curtis. This is a Re-strike Photogravure from the original copper plate. Circa 1980-82. The image size is 15 xx 11.5 inches; the plate marks are 17.25 x 31.5 inches; the frame is 28 x 25 inches. I first acquired originally produced Curtis photogravures in 1974. I learned about the 3 original production papers used from 1900 to 1928. And then a 4th type of introduced by the Lauriat Co. Boston Mass, from 1932- 34. I bought a few groups from Karl Kernberger, who found the unfinished project, both the copper plates and stacks of photogravures. In a Lauriat warehouse. The following is what I have learned about the various papers used with the copper plates: 1900- 1928: The original production. Van Gelder- an ivory white soft matte type. In the first years. Perhaps ... more2-3 types were used. One type used on the portfolio size was thicker. One buyer. Verified this when he saw the set at Princeton University. It was one of the 20-25 sets that J. P. Morgan received for his support. Japan Velum- a light amber hard surfaced paper. The second best. The U. of Utah set has this type; the each portfolio prints are protected with Mylar) Tissue. Or rice paper- a thin translucent type that is almost the same size as the copper plates. These were'tipped' glued) at the corners to Van Gelder. 1932-34 Lauriat Co. to fill gaps in both the volumes and portfolios. A 4th paper was introduced, which has slightly visible vertical& horizontal cross hatching. Some of the latter volumes of the Utah set have some pages of this paper) It is called. Serini. 1974- Karl Kernberger and friends chose 6-8 of their favorite images. Four of each, which were printed on a thin off-white paper and a tone more brown. Than sepia. The prints had a symbol embossed in the lower right corner. It was on the title page of each of the original volumes. 1978- 1981; a San Francisco group(M. Zapplin) bought the plates from Kernberger& friends. And set-up a printing
