Vintage NOS Sargent Brass Exterior Deadbolt Entry Door Lockset Knobs Plates Lock
Penn Antique Restoration. Vintage NOS Sargent Brass Door Set w/Knobs. Plates, Lock. Heavy-duty. Vintage, entry door lockset made by"Sargent" of New Haven, CT during the second half of the previous century. It consists of 2 brass knobs, 2 brass escutcheons, 1 steel mortise lock with a brass faceplate, 1 brass anti-theft collar, 1 brass strike plate for the door jamb, 1 steel split spindle with a setscrew for connecting the knobs, and all 12 installation screws to fasten all parts to the door. All brass parts are solid brass, not plated steel. This is a high-quality, commercial-grade lockset. This set is"New Old Stock" which means that it was made a long time ago but was never used. We found it in it's original box(see 3rd photo) There was no mortise cylinder included with the set. This is the round. Barrel-like piece ... morethat goes into the lock, above the knob on the exterior side, and engages the lock once a key is inserted into it and turned. You could pick one up, brand new, with 2 keys at your local locksmith or hardware store for less than $20. The lock is reversible and could accommodate the swing of either a left or right swing door. The mortise lock is locked by pushing the top button on the faceplate. And unlocked by either pushing the bottom button or using a key. Once locked, the door could only be opened by turning the knob on the interior side of the door, or by using the key on the exterior side of the door. This is a very convenient feature for the person inside of the room. No more locking and unlocking to let someone in. This one is slightly used- it was on an interior door for about a year and the owner couldn't get used to how it worked and didn't need it on an interior door anyways. If you have been looking for one of these I'm sure you found out by now that they are discontinued and no longer being made by Weiser. Not enough demand for decent grade 2 residential locksets anymore. Everybody wants grade 3 cheap cheap cheap junk these days. It is a unique lock that functions as both an entry lockset and as a deadbolt with a full 1" throw into the doorframe. I have a nice reusable cast iron rim lock with catch and doorknobs for your consideration. The doorknobs are red clay black glazed period design. The rim box and catch are cast iron. Included are a cast iron rosette for the opposite of the door. A stamped steel keyhole cover, and a standard 1/4 inch drive rod with set screws. The drive gear disengages the latch nicely although the internal parts upon inspection should be cleaned and lubricated for optimal reuse. There is no key although the deadbolt slide and mechanics are intact for when you either find one that works or have one made. Since we cleaned the set 4 years ago, the parts have developed a very subtle patina, which only adds a degree of warmth to their natural, bronze color. The plates and handle do have scratches and nicks here and there. But considering that they were probably bumped and grabbed hundreds or even thousands of times. They are in great shape. They are free of breaks. Cracks, chips, or gouges. We opened, inspected, and greased the internal parts of the mortise lock to facilitate their movement. If you remove the setscrew and spindle, turn the knob upside down, and shake, the part will fall into the center of the knob(most knobs are hollow) It's usually not very hard to get it back in place once it falls out, however, we'll ship it fastened to the spindle with the setscrew. Once fastened to the spindle, the knob if firm, and doesn't jiggle. About the lock: The lock is reversible and could accommodate the swing of any door. The mortise lock is locked by pushing the bottom button on the faceplate. And unlocked by either pushing the top button or using a key. Once locked, the door could only be opened by turning the knob on the interior side of the door, or by using the key on the exterior side of the door. Each key set is unique. 5 cylinders are GB series keys with 6 digit key numbers, 2 are GA series keys with 5 digit numbers. First- all parts are here and there are working keys. The large brass unit is 7 5/8 by 4 1/2. It consists of 2 brass knobs, 2 brass escutcheons, 1 iron mortise lock with brass faceplate, 1 brass mortise cylinder with a brass anti-theft collar, 1 brass strike plate for the door jamb, 1 steel spindle with a setscrew and 1 securing pin to connect the knobs, and 12 installation screws to fasten the lock and plates to the door and jamb. All brass parts are solid. Brass, not plated steel. Except for the escutcheons which are stamped(pressed) brass, all brass parts are heavy, thick, cast brass. Originally, all parts were copper plated, however, only traces of copper remain. At the point of salvage. It appears to be a brass plate with metal lock, I didn't clean so the original patina is there. Comes with everything in pictures, lock with face plate, escutcheon plate with two key holes- one covered by cover that swings to side, key hole plate, thumb turn for deadbolt, round plate for handle to pass thru, two washers, door handle with both knobs matching, and all original screws for mounting. I do not have the key. It may be hard to see, but all brass parts have lots of detail on them. Cleaned up they should shine.
