Carved around the edges. the face of the brooch has a large circular area filled with'white' stones and small silver metal balls, all sunk into the surface material. The back of the pin has a closure with a trombone catch, and the word'Depose' on it. This indicates that the piece originated in Europe, possibly France. The brooch is in good antique condition. All of the'stones' are present. There is some loss of the little silver balls. I would date this piece to the late Victorian era or early 20th century. This is a great find on a 20" cultured pearl necklace by Mikimoto. The pearls measure just a little over 1/4" across. They are individually knotted and are a pretty white in color with good luster. The catch is wonderful. It has a 1/8" pearl in the center of the top and the back is marked 750 for 18K gold and has the M within the clam shell logo of Mikimoto. The necklace is 20" long but the guaranteed pamphlet says 18" and is ink stamped AAFES Korea 6304-1004-01 and shows this necklace was purchased in 1993. There is another pamphlet with The Art of Selecting Cultured Pearls and this pamphlet is by Mikimoto. The pearls come in a great looking red kid skin feel lined box marked under the lid. The latch is tin that has a copper wash coating. It has aged to a nice warm coppery color. I cleaned the latch and washed it with water so it is ready to use for many years to come. I put a drop of oil inside so it works well and has a nice strong spring.
