I am not an expert in ... moreantique hardware. But I will try to my best ability to describe this piece. It is embossed on the front with Chicago. It was found with the plate that is pictured. I am not certain that it goes with the lock. But I am assuming. If not, it is a bonus. This lock is extremely heavy. I am assuming it is steel. But again, I am not certain. I think it may be called a Mortise type lock. But again, I am not certain. Size of lock: approx. 4 7/8ths by 3 5/8ths and approx. 3/4ths inches thick. The additional metal lock plate that I am enclosing measures approx. 4 ½ inches long– the width in majority of the piece is approx. 1 1/8 th– the widest section is approx. 2 inches. This additional bonus plate is extremely thin. Condition: good antique condition– again. I am not certain if the additional plate goes with the lock. This item is out of my expertise. So I am not certain exactly how to describe. I just know it is an original true old/ antique lock. It is not a reproduction. I also have listed a set of escutcheons or key door back pieces. That I thought might go with this lock, but I am not certain, and have listed them separately. The final photo shows the fancy escutcheons backplate or keyhole cover set with the lock. But they are listed separately and although found together, I am not certain if they are a set for this lock. It is a very heavy piece. And when packaged will weigh approx. 2 pounds or a bit over. All bronze parts are solid bronze not plated iron. We didn't include a strike plate for the door jamb because we didn't have any ornate strikers that matches up with the lock. However. If you don't mind a plain, bronze/brass strike plate, you could buy one from us for an extra $10- email us after the auction if you are interested. The lock is reversible and could accommodate either a right or left swing door. The lock and escutcheons were made by. Norwalk Lock Co. of Norwalk, CT during the late 1880's and the knobs were made by, Reading Hardware Co. of Reading, PA during the 1890's. All bronze parts have lovely, Aesthetic(Eastlake) style designs. We found the parts fairly clean. With very little patina. Some parts have more patina than others. If you would prefer for us to clean all parts to a uniform finish, we could do so prior to shipping for an additional $15-email us after the auction if you're interested. All parts are in great shape with no breaks. Cracks, chips, dents, gouges, or deep scratches. The details of the plates are sharp, but the knobs have been touched so much over the past century that their central, floral motifs show signs of wear. The lock was opened, inspected, and greased to function more smoothly. We made a key to operate the lock, and we could make more for $8/key-email us after the auction if you are interested. The spindle is stuck in one of the knobs. This isn't a flaw. Because that's where the spindle belongs, but we just wanted to make you aware of it.
