This is a fantastic ornate back plate with so many possibilities! Measuring about five inches across this escutcheon of sorts features a woman with a feathered hat. Surrounded by shells and serpents or fish of some sort. The back of this plate is just as spectacular, revealing great details of shells etc. I am not certain of the metal of this piece as it has a bronze or copper color on the front, but more of a brass look to the back. The curl of the fish or serpents' tails make four aligned holes, presumably for installation. I do not know the original purpose of this piece. On the back as shown in the last photo are also four prongs, which are sharp and bent down for safety. These probably aided in the adhering of this finding to furniture once upon a time. The gothic style heavy(approx. 2 3/4 lb. bronze door escutcheon is ready to be used with any fitting lock and doorknob. It has a light patina which we have purposely left as is since some people prefer it this way. It is approx. 14" in height, 3" in width, and stands out from the door approx. 1/2" The lock hole is approx. 4 inches from doorknob base(center to center. There are 4 holes for mounting. Each escutcheon is made of stamped steel, and has a lovely oval form with beaded trim and a crown motif above the knob collar and acanthus leaf motif below the keyhole. Originally. The escutcheons were completely copper plated and finished ... morewith a black lacquer(Japanned" Surprisingly, most of the lacquer and copper remain! They look like, New Old Stock, which means that they were made a long time ago but were never installed. Some have rusts spots, which probably developed naturally due to humidity after years of sitting in a box. The degree of rust varies from plate to plate(see"Group Photo" to compare) The beauty of the plates are only equaled by their impeccable condition! There are no breaks. Cracks, chips, dents, gouges, or deep scratches. The details are sharp and crisp with no signs of wear. Oval beaded plates are extremely common. And we've sold hundreds over the years.
