Be sure to scroll down past the photos for the full description of this auction) Up for auction with NO RESERVE is a very fine and quite unusual Antique English Silver Tantalus with it's 3 Original Cut Glass Decanter Bottles. I can not remember the last time I have a Silver Plate Tantalus and I am sure it is quite a Rare find. Especially complete with all 3 Cut Glass Decanters still intact. The Tantalus is marked on the side with a Large Crown and the words"The Tantalus" and then there is a small plaque on the front that reads Payne& Co. Bath. The Tantalus in of very fine quality throughout with great Rope designs and nice Edwardian form. The Glass Decanters are also of very fine quality with amazing Cut designs throughout and large prism cut ball form stoppers. The Tantalus and Decanters are a great size for display or for modern use with the Tantalus measuring 13-3/4" long by 6-1/4" wide and sitting 11-3/4" tall. The Decanters measure 8-1/2" tall by 3-1/4" wide and will hold approx 600ml or 20 U.S. Fluid Ounces. The Tantalus in very fine all original condition overall, with minor signs of use and age but no bad wear to the base metal and certainly no dents etc. The Decanters are also in good shape for their age with some chips to the corners at the bases from years of going in and out of the Tantalus and one stopper has a large chip which makes it sit lower in the bottle than the others. The Set is in fine condition for another hundred years of use and I am sure the new owner will love it as much as I do. I doubt you will find another Antique Silver Plate Tantalus complete with original Bottles, come up for auction any

This is one of the most unique decanter boxes ever! It includes closed-lid storage for cigars and possible cigarettes or other items on the right box. When decanter box is open. A long pin(picture 4) can be put into the lock to keep the cigars locked away. When the box is closed and the pin is inserted, no one can open the drawers for the cigars, etc. 3 cut-glass decanters included. Two handles for easy carry. But, it is about 25 lbs. Royal Navy Cover to commemorate Special Operations by British Submarines Malayan Theatre 1943-45- HMS Tantalus HMS Tantalus was a submarine of the third group of the T class. She was built as P318 by Vickers Armstrong. Barrow, and launched on 24 February 1943. So far she has been the only ship of the Royal Navy to bear the name Tantalus, after the mythological Tantalus, son of Zeus Tantalus served in the Far East for much of her wartime career. She sank the Malaysian tug Kampung Besar. And the Malaysian Pulo Salanama in April 1944, and went on to sink the Japanese army cargo ships Amagi Maru and Hiyoshi Maru, the Japanese cargo ship Hachijin Maru, the Japanese coaster Palang Maru, the Japanese fishing vessel Taisei Maru No. 12, a Japanese tug and three barges, an unknown Japanese vessel, and a Siamese sailing vessel, whilst claiming to have ... moredamaged a second. Just removed from a local estate is this beautiful golden Oak Three decanter Tantalus Set. Great quality and in nice condition. The labels on the decanters are Sterling Silver see Photos. The bottles are in great condition as well as the stoppers. The box has the original key and the drawer opens by pullig the pin to unlock a fitted drawer for cards and games. The top will not close due to a small piece of metal that locks the top closed is broken off. I have the small piece and am sure it can be relaced easily. Sheffield possibly. It has the feel and weight of Sheffield and there is a mark on the underside of the stand. Mark could be: WM or WKZ and there is a number above it possibly 334-723? For those of you who are versed in this perhaps you can shed some light this piece. Glasses(old fashion) are 2 3/4" high by 2 3/4" wide and are leaded crystal. Glasses have had chips removed from the rims. Bottle is 14" tall with stopper. Total height of piece is 16 1/2" to top of handle. All are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or unusual scratches. The stopper seats well and I believe original. This is a beautiful set and quite ornate. French Leatherbound Faux Books Liquor Decanter Set. Tantalus Vintage Collectibles:Decanter Set:Tantulus:Faux Books(click the picture to see additional larger photos) Both charming and functional. This vintage liquor decanter set is hidden inside what appears to be a stack of four leather bound books. Lift the second book, and you find two glass decanters inside, and 2 shot glasses(3 are missing) The square glass decanters with rounded shoulders have attractive gold detailing around the bodies and on their glass stoppers. The stoppers are molded glass and feature an elaborate inset double star design on their domed tops. The stoppers with their glass plugs are in perfect condition- only one tiny nick at the edge of one plug. The two blown glass shot glasses have gold painted rims. Unfortunately the other three glasses have been lost with time. ... moreFortunately, they are of a common enough size and design that they could likely be replaced, should the new owner elect to. It is unusual to find a set like this with places for five glasses(rather than 4 or 6) The case interior is also in near mint condition. Including the paper board cutout frame which holds the glassware, a brick red papered top interior, a long brass frame hinge at the back, and an elbow hinge on the left side. The brass frame hinge has a patina on the outside, but is still quite shiny inside; we think it originally was covered over with paper or ribbon. A gold stamp floral design decorates the top and bottom inner frames all around the sides. Made in France" is stamped in gold at the front center. The case exterior features four leather and paper covered"books" with extensive gold decorations. And stamped titles: Liguori; Nouveau Commentaire sur Les Livres des Divines Ecritures; Jean Richepin, Miarka; and the fourth we can't quite make out. The caddy measures 13 1/2' long. 4' wide, 11 1/2' high, and stands on hard plastic ball feet. The caddy is a brass finished metal and has a lock on it that is in the closed position. Bottles and glasses have no chips or cracks. The bottles have the labels on them. One starting to peel. Some of the gold paint on the bottles has worn off. The accordian is pretty clean for its age, the gold tone bezels have a few blemishes but overall there is no rust or tarnish. This is a musical accordion-when you remove either bottle, it triggers a music box inside which plays"O SOLE MIO" and it plays flawlessly. I did not clean the inside of the bottles and there are a few old drips of liquor still inside-should clean out with some hot water. Measures 10" high. 11.5" wide and 4" depth. Made in Japan. Standing 13 1/2” tall to the top of the two suitcase handles. This is 13 1/4” wide and about 6 3/4” front-to-back at the curved feet. I don't get these very often and have to say that this is the nicest I've ever had. As shown. The top opens up to access the three extensively cut bottles which are topped by round prism cut stoppers. As shown. Both the top and base of the carrier are decorated with tiny ball gadrooning but the real charmer here is that the feet are decorated with gazelles while the handles are decorated with snails. ... moreThe attention to detail is such that the middle bottle is a tiny bit shorter than the other two to allow this to snap closed at the top. The bottoms of the bottles have a ray or sunburst design and the taller two are about 9 3/8” to the top of the stoppers whereas the middle bottle is about 9 1/8” tall. The bottles weigh between 2 ½ and 2 ¾ pounds each and the whole unit weighs in at about 15 pounds. The top opens and closes securely although I don't have the key to lock it at the top. It has wonderful decoration on both sides and an un-monogrammed shield on each side at the base. The one thing this doesn't have is a maker's mark and I have been similarly frustrated with other pieces of similarly spectacular silver plate.they obviously didn't care who was going to looking at it a hundred or so years hence. Although my best guess is that it is late 1800's to early 1900's English. Please buy it for what you think it is. As one would expect, the jars have minor chips at the base from having been removed and replaced in the holder for over one hundred years. Originally purchased in France. Image#6 is the Bonhams estimate on this set. Assessed by their antiquities dept. It did not sell on their on-line auction so I decided to sell on eBay. This is an Rare Antique French Burl Walnut Wood Tantalus with 4 fine crystal decanters& 13 cordials. The hinged burl walnut case has some very ornate brass. Wood, and MOP design, panels opening to the fitted gilt ormolu bronze holder consisting of four etched fine cut crystal glass decanters with original stoppers and eight matching etched liqueur cordials glasses and five that are not matching, one open spot with a glass missing. All the glassware is in excellent condition. The wooden case very minor issues put for the most part is in excellent condition for its age. The box measures 11" high x 13" wide x 10" deep. There are no chips or cracks to any of the glassware. All questions welcome.

Antique Tantalus Decantor Set - cir 1890
This is one of the most exquisite tantalus sets I've ever seen! It has 3 cut crystal decantors. 6 glasses, and even a hidden drawer! All of the decanters have a metal tag; one Bourbon, one Sherry, and one Scotch. The design on these decanters is quite lovely. There are no chips and no cracks on any of the decanters. There is a chip on the bottom of one of the crystal stoppers as shown in the pictures. The glasses tuck neatly inside each other; 3 larger ones and 3 smaller ones and they all fit in the drawer. There is a key to lock this tantelus set. When you press the button in the middle of the first drawer the second drawer pops open; thus the hidden drawer which has all kinds of nice little compartments. Gorgeous Vintage Crystal and Chrome TANTALUS Decanter Set I have a terrible admission. I can't control myself at auctions. This is yet another example. The time has come. Due to circumstances beyond my control, to"de-hord" and dispose of treasures. I bought these knowing that one pump did not work. I figured out why, but never got around to fixing it. The aluminum"bottle top" that screws onto the decanter is split and does not allow the top to seal tightly. I was going to slip a stainless steel hose clamp up under there to keep the top tight and secure and then it will pump. Just never got around to it. It is a beautifully ornately cut crystal glass decanters and a brass metal locking Tantalus. This set contains the Tantalus. Two decanters with brass pump action caps with feeding tubes/straws, two brass reversible liquor hang tags, one lock, two keys. The reversible hang tags read Bourbon. Scotch on one side and Rye, Vodka on the other side. The decanters measure 10 ¾ inches tall to the top of the caps and 3 inches square. The overall measurements of the Tantalus is 13 inches tall to the top of the handle. 8 inches wide and 4 inches deep. The lock measures approx. ¾ inch by 1 inch. Antique Victorian Tantalus Complete Circa 1860 Description: A beautiful French or English tantalus. Circa 1860. It is all mahogany veneered with ebony and further decorated with brass and mother of pearl inlay. It has four decanters and 16 cordials. The interior tray pulls out and is made from mahogany and gilt brass with a grape leaf and grapes theme. I take this to mean the tantalus was meant for sherry or port perhaps? The tantalus is complete but there are some condition issues. One of the cordials was broken and has been glued(UVA glue) and it has a chip at the base. All the other glasses and all the decanters are perfect as is the rest of the interior. The exterior has some brass inlay missing here and there and has had some repairs. Some good, some not so good. This is for a very nice 2 Decanter Tantalus.Could be Oak? but not sure.there is a slight bit of damage to the Decanters with slight chips on the bottle stoppers,the bulbous part of the stoppers which are faceted is fine with no cracks or splits to them,the other damage is around the neck of the decanters I have tried to show this in the photo's, on the top of the tantalus on either side of the handle there are 2 fancy shaped pieces which look like they have been plated over brass,because the brass is showing through,this is not showing on the rest of the silver. The base of the rack has the Mappin Brothers hallmark, dating this item to 1902 or earlier. I have inspected this item set thoroughly. The decanters have no chips. Dings, scratches or repairs. The two plain decanters do have water marks. Each bottle and stopper are marked"1" and"2" and must be matched up as the"1" stopper does not fit into the"2" decanter. Antique Wooden and Brass Tantalus with Three Decanters and Stoppers
This is an item called a tantalus. It is a wooden frame or holder for 3 liquor or wine bottles. The owner would place his liquor in the bottles. Lock the lid, and tantalize the servants, who could not open the bottles! To further deter theft, one stopper is shorter than the others and the bottles will only fit into certain slots. The tantalus is 14 ½” 37 cm) wide, 5” 13 cm) deep, and 12 ½” 32 cm) high. There are 3 cut glass decanters with glass stoppers. There is a lock in the lid. But the key is missing. There are two latches on the lid, but one is missing, so I would not carry it by the handle. There is a metal plaque on the front, but with no engraving. There are no marks or maker name on the item. There is one metal tag on a chain that says“Whiskey” which is probably silver-plated. It was purchased in England in the early 1960s. ... moreAnd it was old then. Eastlake Oak Stick and Ball Tantalus/Rack with Two Decanters
This late Victorian Era oak Tantalus is 11 1/2" high. The felt covered base measures 6" x 10 3/4" The decanters are 6 1/2" tall and 3 1/2" square. I find no damage on the two pressed glass decanters. The fabulous cork stoppers have brass hounds for handles. I would call this old treasure a"Poor Man's Tantalus" It isn't all fancy with decorative brass hinges and trim and made of mahogany or walnut like most. The hinge and locking hook clasp are metal and they are in great condition and firmly attached. The top handle opens upward so you can lift the decanters out safely. The Eastlake designed oak rack is sturdy and in good condition for its' age. There is one nick on the bottom of the handle shown in the last photo. The center rung has a replacement knob on the back. I can see stress lines above ... moreeach of the center knobs. However. The side rails are firm so I am guessing they may have been reglued at some time? Fabulous Inlaid Walnut Tantalus/Decanter Stand.
For auction is a fabulous two bottle tantalus/decanter stand dating to the edwardian era C1900/10. The extra large cut glass decanters are superb quality with tiny numbers etched into the corresponding stoppers and decanters so that they only fit the correct bottle. They are in perfect condition with no damage and have star cut bases. Canted corners, cut shoulders and half reeded bodies and measure 10 inches high[26cm] x 4 ins square[10cm] Lovely colour walnut base with inlaid banding and cast brass handles and brass plaque[not engraved] standing on small bun feet. Base measures11.5 ins wide[29cm] x 7 ins deep[18cm] x 4 ins high[10cm] Condition is excellent with no damage or restoration and i doubt it had hardly any use at all. My Dad received this for placing in a Pro-Am golf tournament in the 60's and this was presented to him as his prize winnings. I cleaned it up well enough to show the condition and description and could still use some cleaning up-Normal wear for its age-silver plating is rubbing of the bar exposing the brass and handle of the oak case. Offered for sale. A"Rare& Extremely Unusual" Late Victorian Antique Oak Jewellery Box. Combined Perfume Tantalus. This Deliciously exquisite and most unusual item is simply a delight. And a genuine curio of the Victorian era. It was clear that a fine lady would need to protect her treasures from potential light fingered servants, however it seems there was also a need to ensure her expensive perfumes were not being surreptitiously dabbed on the neck of the housemaid and it must have been derived from the“Butlers Enemy” the drinks“Tantalus” first shown at the great exhibition, that the idea of combining a version of this with a lockable jewellery box must have come, hence allowing both valuables to be displayed whilst at the same time protecting them from use by the staff. It is unclear when the first of these were made and how ... morewidely they were used and for how long they were popular, clearly nowhere near as widespread in use as their counterpart the drinks Tantalus which is borne out by their rarity today. This example is stunning and in really very nice condition, it consists of four cut glass(probably Bohemian) perfume bottles themselves in lovely condition with only a couple of flea bites on one of the stoppers to fault them. The jewellery box opens at the top with lockable hinged double doors which also secure the bottles in the Tantalus; the doors also have superb bevelled glass panels to allow the jewellery below to be viewed. Inside there are three red leather lined compartments two of which have red leather covered tilt-top covers and are silver embossed with the words in old English script“ Hair Pin s” the central compartment is open. There are a few scuffs and minor age and use related marks to the leather but these are only very much what you would expect, indeed require of a used item of this age. Complete French 19thC Inlaid Brass Boulle Tantalus Crystal Decanters & Stems
19thC Antique Inlaid Brass Boulle Scroll All The Way Down For More Pictures Wow what a great piece! This is a serpentine front French 19th Century Liquor Cave or Tantalus and inlaid with brass. I think the wood is rosewood and the cabinet is lacquered with a fine ornate brass inlay and a red inlay. But not sure of what the red material is. This Tantalus was quite fancy when new and it was used and not just for show. Several of the cordials are worn on the bottom while others still retain their sharp edges on the corners of their base. I cleaned the decanters which still had the dried stain of what I assumed was alcohol. Please scroll down and view all the pictures showing the detail of the stemware, the decanters, and the condition of the case which unfortunately is not perfect. The decanters and cordials are of high quality crystal. They ... moreare not signed which is the norm for crystal of this age. Baccarat did not sign. Or etch, their crystal with their logo until the 1930s and while I do not know if this is Baccarat it certainly has their characteristic style, especially the stoppers. The decanters have a fine polished pontil and wonderful clean lines. Each decanter indents in the center and has a wonderful square flat top stopper and a cylindrical neck leading to the decanter opening. The cordials sit on a square foot and have the same lines as the decanters. This incredible Tantalus comes with a caddy allowing for the decanters and glasses to be carried to another room or removed from the case for easy access. The bottom rows containing the glasses slides out which is the only way to remove the glass. This set was expertly designed. But I must say that while the caddy seems to handle the weight of the crystal it makes me nervous because the crystal is rather heavy. There are 4 decanters. And 16 cordials. I think they are all original but I have no way of swearing to this. One of the decanters has a different mouth opening than the other 3 but other than that, it is identical. The cabinet has some wear.there is a strip of brass inlaid on the front missing at the top thin piece on right side front sticking out that mostly could be put back in place with a front strip missing on the top pic 7 with layer of the burl missing same pic& loss pic 5& damage to back left corner pic 6. There was no key with it& I can't get it to close flush either me or needs a adjustment. The brass hinge on the back left side is missing a screw. There are 13 beautiful crystal aperitifs that have fitted slots they fit into with three slots that don't have glasses in them. A great looking english tantalus from the 1930s in good condition. There is no key but it is unlocked and functioning well. All the glass decanters are in fantastic shape for the age. Just a few minor nicks on the bottoms of the stoppers and some minor nicks on the bottom edges that are almost not even worth mentioning. The hanging tags are all stamped sterling. There is a chip in the wood stand on the bottom corner edge but it does not effect the tantalus at all. A locking bar caddy with decanters for Scotch. Rye and Whiskey. The bottles hold about 500ml each and the entire set is about 12in by 12in. I am not sure of the materials on this but it looks like mahogany and brass to me. It also contains the original lock and key(or at least, original to me! Antique Tantalus Decantor Set - cir 1890-Free Shipping!
Description This is one of the most exquisite Tantalus sets I've ever seen! It has 3 crystal decanters. 6 glasses, and even a hidden drawer! All of the decanters have a metal tag; one Bourbon, one Sherry, and one Scotch. The design on these decanters is quite lovely. There are no chips and no cracks on any of the decanters. There is a chip on the bottom of one of the crystal stoppers as shown in the pictures. The glasses tuck neatly inside each other; 3 larger ones and 3 smaller ones and they all fit in the drawer. There is a key to lock this Tantalus set. When you press the button in the middle of the first drawer the second drawer pops open; thus the hidden drawer which has all kinds of nice little compartments. Victorian Brass Mounted Oak Tantalus With 3 Square Cut Glass Decanters - Antique
A late 19th Century Victorian oak tantalus with Gothic style brass fittings. The body holds three cut glass decanters which all match and appear to be original. The decanters are accessed by unlocking and opening the flip type doors. Underneath the doors is a compartment with two moveable dividers. The lock is a Bramah type and still functions locking the doors. Although please note the key is a replacement. To the top is a shield plaque which is etched with‘The Widness Athletic Club 1887’ The decanters are of square form with hobnail cutting and chunky lapidary stoppers. The base is covered in green felt. Stock Code: 7925 OC12-7 Height 28 cms(11 inches) Width 37.5 cms(14.75 inches) Weight 6280 grams(before packing) Key is a replacement. Incredible and RARE French Tantalus or Liquor Cabinet
Rare French Tantalus with four matching decanters with original stoppers and 12 Liquor glasses which are possibly Baccarat! Each of the small glasses is acid etched around the rim with an"egg and dart" pattern. They match the four decanters in that they are"ribbed" in a similar manner. All twelve glasses rest in a bronze rack on either side of the case. The four decanters are also held in place by another bronze holder. The case is an incredible mixture of burled walnut and a secondary wood. The outer edges of the box are covered in another inlayed wood that is in a chevron pattern. As you can see from the pictures. When the box is unlocked and opened, it two sides swing out allowing access to all twelve glasses and the four decanters. It is a lockable case and it does have a key believed to be the original! The top of ... morethe box does have a brass inlay that is suited for a monogram or crest. It is truly a unique. RARE, and wonderful item!
