Sterling Silver and Hawkes ABP Cut Glass Double Tantalus Beautiful sterling frame and Hawkes cut glass tantalus. American brilliant period(ABP) cut glass ovoid shapped decanters and a sterling silver frame that is uniquely designed to stopper and lock the bottles into the caddy. Remove the lock. Lower the hasp and lift the handle to free the spirits inside. History: A Tantalus is a locked spirits bottle. You can see the wine or whiskey. But you can't have any. The name comes from a Greek myth about a satyr condemned to be hungry and thirsty for all eternity with food and water juuussst out of reach. FRAME is marked Hawkes Sterling on the underside as shown in photo. MEASURES: 9 x 4-1/2 inches by 10 inches tall. It is also stamped with model number 1625. They have sterling silver bands fitted around the rims of each bottle and are marked Sterling. Each MEASURES@ 7-1/2 inches tall. 4 diameter. There is a Hawkes Trefoil maker's mark acid etched on the bottom of each bottle. As shown in photo. Pieces very much like this one were made by Hawkes and marked and sold by Tiffany& Co. Circa early 20th C. Very Good to Excellent condition. No chips. Cracks, fleabites or repairs found on crystal. The bottoms are cloudy, as seen in photos. CRYSTAL PITCHER Vintage Crystal Wine or Beverage Carafe/Pitcher with silver plated attached lid. The bottom is made from a thick and heavy clear glass crystal. Topped with a silver plated lid, cover and spout. The pitcher itself is what I think is lead crystal. It is very thick and heavy. CONDITION A great and fully functional piece. Top piece is what I consider to be commonly referred to as a Grecian design. With sterling silver overlay. Underside of spout has engraved leaf work within the sterling silver overlay. There is a nice motif or swirl design on handle and then dotted design on the flip up lid. There are NO markings to indicate maker. Description Stunning pinched glass decanter with matching hand blown pinched stopper. The collar is sterling silver with a Birmingham hallmark dated 1920. Made by S Blanckensee& Sons Ltd. The hallmark has rubbed. There are a couple of light scratch marks on the underneath. the stopper has a small chip on the underside(not visible when the stopper is in) NB: I have a feeling the stopper is not original as it looks like it has been chipped at the bottom to fit in the decanter and it is not hand blown. London(925) London makers but bares no assay office mark. Date: 1789( o) Maker: Thomas Phipps& Edward Robinson. Makers are dated from 1790- 1805 but registered there mark in 1883 Size: 1 5/8" length x almost 1" width Condition: shows very minimal if any signs of ware. Sterling Silver Overlay Art Nouveau Decanter, Pitcher
This is an antique crystal sterling silver overlay decanter. It is very heavy@ 3 lbs. 6+ oz. It is 6.5" tall and 5" wide. It is decorated with a gorgeous. Extremely detailed silver overlay of flowers and vines. The vines actually go right through some of the flower petals. The stopper is decorated with the same design. The handle and unusual neck are completely covered with silver. There is a large engraved cartouche with: WPC With appreciation of the members of the Outer Division of C" Seems an odd message. There is another. Blank cartouche below the top of the handle. It is marked"STERLING" and 531 along the bottom silver rim. Unfortunately this beauty has some damage. The stopper's glass is chipped and cracked in places. The decanter has a crack on the starburst bottom and several in the neck. These are not ... moreimmediately noticeable. The stopper has to be positioned to sit right in the jug. There is some white sediment in the very bottom. A very attractive cut glass and silver plate mounted wine decanter. The body is decorated with alternating panels of hob nail and floral decoration with a star burst pattern to the base. The mount could be solid silver but. Firstly, it has no marks and secondly, it is in such good condition I am unwilling to file down anywhere to carry out an acid test, so please bid for it as plate. Due to the lack of marks or other indentifying features I cannot give an age. Height 37cm Weight 1.5kg hence the postage cost. The only damage I can find it to one facet corner of the stopper which has a tiny chip which I have tried to show in the photos. Otherwise it appears to be unmarked. The Service is in very fine all original condition, with the Glass portions showing no large chips, cracks or repairs(just a few Cups have tiny chips) and the Decanters only show minor wear to the Silver Plate portions. The Tray shows more wear as seen in the photos. I think the set is fabulous just the way it is with nice character and age but it would look absolutely smashing if you had it replated! There is a dimple in the handle right where you thumb would go- I included two pictures of that. Close-up of the stopper so you can see the tiny micro nick in the side and the bubble(larger) which is inside the stopper- stopper is hand numbered 23. Star cut on the bottom. Description This is a 9 pc set including stopper. Unfortunately the decanter has a rectangular shaped crack in the top that I did not notice until I cleaned it. It is difficult to see while displayed and the crack is sturdy. There is also a small crack in one of the glasses. The stopper and the other 6 classes are in excellent condition. There are no markings on this set. I believe it is from the mid 19th century American. All of the bottoms are polished and are very thick. The decanter alone weighs 30.30 ounces and the glasses are about 3 ounces each. All of the glass is hand moulded or blown. The decanter with stopper measures 9 1/8" tall and each Glass measures just under 2 1/2" high. Only 3 of the glasses are blue.
