These impressive and dramatic jars have a rooster or cock motif to the enamel decoration; the handles also have a bird theme. These have a striking color palette of black with shades of red, orange, and yellowish-tan with minor white areas. These have gilded metal areas. Each jar stands about 9 inches tall, with a maximum diameter of approximately 8 3/4 inches. Unpacked, the set weighs just under 8 1/2 pounds. These jars would be a fine addition to a collection of vintage Asian decorative arts. Identification These jars are Chinese. They are vintage. But the exact age is not known. They are unmarked. Condition The jars looks very good overall. With light wear. The underside of one lid has a minor, circular flaw, as made(as shown) The metal areas have minor finish wear and some tarnishing. The handles have small areas of minor darkening; there are some tiny holes in the handles that appear to be as made. Glorious cameo glass! A matched pair of vases(7.25"Hx5"W) So difficult to come by, the frosted amber orange ground is ornamented with oak leaves and acorns in satin shades of warm red brown and glowing light to deep greens. The pedestal base- while quite dark. Almost black- is actually the deepest green, the edge softening to the lightest green as it blends into the amber body. The neck is an applied band of the russet red- with a surprising tint of green as it meets the neck! The textured bottom of each base reveals a polished down pontil mark; while the pieces are unsigned, the design resembles pieces by Galle, and what appears to be a"W" mark is polished into the surface of the bottom. Vintage Pair Asian Antique Brass Ceremonial Pitcher Vase Urns Ceremonial Use? Up for auction today is a pair of Antique. Brass, Asian style Ceremonial Pitcher, Vase or Urn pieces. Originally purchased at an estate sale some years ago, we were told then, that they were historic and most likely used for some sort of ceremony, though the exact details escape us. These identical pieces measure 4 3/4" tall to the top of the highest spout. 2" wide across the further legs as well as on the side to the spout, and 4 1/2" wide from end to end on top. Each piece has three solid legs. A round center base, and a large cavity inside that can easily house a candle or liquid. The top has two spouts, one with a curved tube and the other like that of a pitcher. Each piece also has two small posts that stick up and these appear to be just decorative ... morein nature, but may have some sort of use as well. One piece shows one post shorter than the rest, and may have been broken off. These two pieces have engraved carvings all around though we don't believe they signify anything in particular. Each piece has a residue in the inside cavity. One has but a few spots and the other a build up all around the inside. The buildup is off white and crusty. Similar to soapstone or similar material. It does not have wax quality as it is very hard and crusty. We were able to scrape some off and it came off as a dusty powder. These two pieces are identical in appearance and size and were most likely part of a set and are being offered as a set. They look very nice together and will make a very nice addition to any antique collection and can be a conversation piece as well. Take a look at the pictures. Fresh from the fabulous estate of a 95-year-old CT collector comes this beautiful mirror- image pair of late 19th early 20th century signed Meiji Satsuma bottle vases with lids. They are 7" tall and nicely enameled and gilded. With some wear to the surface and overall light crazing, common in Satsu ma ware of this period. Unfortunately the neck of the vase on the right has been broken and glued just as it rises above the crown of the bottle. I didn't even see it until I went to measure it AFTER I had photographed it. I looked at the repair with a loop and I think it was done with an epoxy glue. Which has a shiny enamel-like surface. Because of the white enameled decoration around the repair, it's not so bad, visually. Priced accordingly. A rare and hard to find pair and still stunning, even with the boo-boos. The color is slightly different in the flower center, this one being more yellow. I am not certain that this is considered true majolica. But it has that look. Up for Auction is a pair of Nippon Vase made in the moriage style. Gold was used quite lavishly on the pieces exported during the time of 1891-1921. However. Much of this gold was not very durable and today we find that a number of these pieces have much of the gold worn off. Some dealers and collectors have a tendency to add gold paint to these items but generally it can be detected quite easily.Some pieces are decorated in a moriage fashion. This refers to applied clay(slip) relief decorations. There are three basic methods for applying the moriage designs. One is by hand rolling and shaping. The second makes use of tubing. The tubing was filled with softened clay and applied to the porcelain much as we decorate cakes today. The third technique is to reduce the clay to a liquid state and brush it on items. Moriage designs are innumerable ... moreand varied. The vases measure approximately 10" Tall and 16.5" Round. There are no chips. Cracks, repairs, or crazing. As you read above the moriage style did not hold up well. The gold moriage design on the two pieces in very good condition. Some gold is rubbed off the handles and lips, but not excessive.
