Check out my other items! Be sure to add me to your favorites list! 2 Antique Mercury Glass Candlesticks. History of Mercury Glass: Silvered glass. Also know as Mercury Glass(or sometimes, Varnish Glass) is double-walled glassware with a silver coating inside the walls, similar to the silvering on a vacuum flask liner. The first patent for silvered glass was taken out in 1849 by Hale Thomson and Edward Varnish in England. Shortly afterwards, in 1855, Thomas Leighton of the New England Glass Company took out a patent in America. The demand for silvered glass led to production in glass-houses in England. Germany, France, Belgium, the USA, and Bohemia, many with their own production processes. In England Edward Varnish and his partners sold silvered glass for only about ten years. They had a major display at the The Great Exhibition in the Crystal ... morePalace in 1851. The main production from about 1860 onwards came from glassworks in the Bohemian forest. Huge quantities of silvered glass left the factories at Iglau and Haida. Where the whole region was geared for its production. In Germany this type of glass was known as Bauernsilber- farmer's silver or peasant silver. In England it was often called poor man's silver. The most common mixtures used to make silvered or mercury glass were solutions of silver nitrate with some form of glucose. At Whitefriars Glassworks in London they made silvered glass for Edward Varnish and Hale Thomson using silver nitrate mixed with grape juice. Each manufacturer had their own recipe. Which was a closely guarded secret. The silvering liquid was poured into the space between the walls of the glass vessel through a hole in the bottom, and it adhered to the glass. The residue was drained off, the inside dried, and some form of seal placed over the hole. Other finishing techniques included glass or metal discs or plugs, and the integrity of the finished ware depended to some extent on the seal. One of the vases had floral designs painted on and I couldn't tell if the other had been painted, but they are both pretty shabby looking. They are in fair condition with losses to the mercury finish, but no cracks or chips and these are heavy glass, so from what I've read, they are very old. This listing is for an unusual mercury glass car decanter set. The car is mercury glass with a crackled effect with a coralene beaded pattern on the exterior. The car is unmarked. The wheels are metal. Once the lid is opened there is a six(6) piece decanter set inside. This set is missing one(1) of the cordial glasses. The decanter and one glass retains a made in Czechoslovakia label on the bottom. It stands about 5 3/4" high to the top of the roof and measures about 9" long from the front wheels to the back end of the car. The one glass with ... morethe paper label is cracked as seen in the pictures. There are no other chips. Cracks or repairs to this set. There are some other issues to mention. Both axels are bent so the wheels will not roll. I have not tried to straighten them out. The lid or top of the car has sprung and will not close tightly. There are pink flowers missing in the coralene pattern. This coralene bead pattern on the exterior is fragil and is coming loose. I was told they are candlestick Holders for thin tapered candles. I also think may have been bottles with missing stoppers or even delicate bud vases. The bottoms have holes that do not go all the way through, so they will hold water or liquids. They measure about 6.5" high and the bases measure about 2-3/4" across. The top portion is clear glass. Centers are matte silver and the round bases are shiny polished mercury glass. The openings are about 1/2 of an inch in diameter. They are in very nice condition with no chips. Cracks or repairs. Note the buttons at both the beginning and ending points.That's the way these old home-made garlands were typically strung! At the white button. There is string left. Condition is good with some wear and missing wire and stones which can be replaced but there is a chip off the top. Being high on the top of a tree it wouldn't be that noticable. LARGE 7" antique GREEN mercury glass VASE germany 1890's ART DECO vaseline
THIS IS A FABULOUS ANTIQUE GREEN MERCURY ART GLASS VASE/VESSEL PROVENANCE: germany acid etched on the bottom AGE: c1890 SIZE: 7" tall/ mouth diameter 5 1/4" base diameter3 1/2" COLOR: a beautiful green. the rim- thinnest glass areas almost glow in the light reminiscent of beautiful quality vaseline glass CONDITION: overall excellent vintage condition. shows beautifully. a bit of silvering has broken away from an area on the footed pedestal leaving a small patch of clear glass. you can hear the rattle from the silvering inside when the vessel is handled. interior silver sloughing off is very typical of old mercury glass simply adding to the vintage charm. a little history: Silvered glass. Also know as Mercury Glass(or sometimes, Varnish Glass) is double-walled glassware with a silver coating inside the walls, similar to the ... moresilvering on a vacuum flask liner. The first patent for silvered glass was taken out in 1849 by Hale Thomson and Edward Varnish in England. Each manufacturer had their own recipe, which was a closely guarded secret. The silvering liquid was poured into the space between the walls of the glass vessel through a hole in the bottom, and it adhered to the glass. The residue was drained off, the inside dried, and some form of seal placed over the hole. Listed is a 6' strand of vintage silvery pink mercury glass beaded garland made in Japan. The beads are 3/8" in diameter. Beautiful pink color and where it has faded a beautiful silver remains. lot 2 Vtg Antique Multi Color Mercury Glass Bead Christmas Tree Garland 9" each
This is 2 separate vintage glass garlands. BOTH are multicolored. BUT THEY ARE NOT ALIKE. One has beads slightly smaller than the other. Both measure about 9 ft each- one is slightly longer. One slightly less(3 or 4 inches less) The smaller beads are in groups of 3, the larger beads in groups of 2. A few broken beads. Some color discoloration, but overall good condition for age. Antique - Red Mercury Glass Beaded Fringe – 69” x 4.5” - 1 ½” Pounds
Antique- Red Mercury Glass Beaded Fringe– 69” x 4.5” Approximately 1 ½” Pounds) The beads are red glass with a mercury or silvered coating inside of the holes which reflects the light. The fringe has been used and is in rough condition. The binding is twisted and stretched. And the string holding the beads has apparently stretched. See photos. The silvering inside of the beads is somewhat worn from the string. There are two lengths of fringe- 29 inches and 40 inches. The longer section shown at the bottom of the photo has some missing strands and beads. The shorter section is in a bit better condition. But it is still worn and may have some missing beads.

VINTAGE LARGE BEAD MERCURY GLASS CHRISTMAS GARLAND This is a vintage mercury glass multicolor bead garland. The garland measures 78 inches long. Beads are LARGE they measure approx; ½”in diameter, there is age related wear some paint loss and silvering loss that only time could create. After all the garland is 60 years old. I am including lots of pictures so you can see the condition of the garland.

Antique Victorian 19th C. Mercury Glass Gold Tree Topper~ Gold Tinsel
A pretty gold mercury glass tree topper having 3 gold sections in the middle and decorated with curled wire wrapped in silver/gold tinsel. There are 3 gold balls hanging off a few of the curled wire sections( one ball is missing) On the bottom section are 4 pieces of tinsel wired on. There is a bit of paint loss of gold on the 3 gold center sections but still appears to be in good condition considering its age. The topper measures 5" high( not counting the wire) The thick wire going through the center is a little oddly curled but necessary. I imagine, to attach the piece to the tree top. This great antique( 1890-1920) glass lamp is complete with the original burner and it stands 4 3/4 ins tall( burner included) This lamp has a mercury coated inner bowl while the base is clear. This looks like a pressed glass lamp There is wear to the inner coating as per usual with usage and the outside of the bowl has the remains of a flower painted on it. flower is very scratched and would clean off as it is not enameled to the glass) There is NO shade for this lamp.
