TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish The Lady in Medieval England ... more1000-1500 by Peter Coss. NOTE: We have 75.000 books in our library, almost 10,000 different titles. Odds are we have other copies of this same title in varying conditions, some less expensive, some better condition. We might also have different editions as well(some paperback, some hardcover, oftentimes international editions) If you don’t see what you want, please contact us and ask. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 214 pages. Publisher: Wrens Park Publishing; 1999) Although there have been many books written about medieval women. Few have focused specifically on the lady. In a book designed as a companion to the author's previous book. The Knight in Medieval England. Professor Coss attempts to remedy this with a work which concentrates on the role of the lady within medieval society, how she was perceived both by herself and by her male counterparts, how she related to and participated within the seemingly prevailing male culture of gentility, how the lives of lords and ladies inter-related, and how they behaved towards one another. The author begins by introducing the issues to be discussed through the example of the Pastons of the fifteenth century. The origins of the English lady are then considered and her position. Status and image during the eleventh and twelfth centuries examined, highlighting both changes and continuities. The book then develops this theme by looking at the widening gentility in England during the succeeding centuries, especially as expressed through a variety of visual media. Employing a variety of sources. Including double monumental effigies, brasses, and surviving letters, Professor Coss opens to popular scrutiny the affective relations between lord and lady, before turning to antagonistic relationships. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 167 pages. Publisher: Cameo/ Paul Hamlyn; 1966) When we see the range of marvelous objects produced by medieval goldsmiths. From brooches and belt clasps to crowns, chalices, reliquaries, and even altar frontals, we appreciate the multitude of skills they had at their fingertips. And when the author traces the various influences that contributed to medieval Europe through the Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic periods, we begin to understand why the production of medieval goldsmiths was so prolific. The ingenuity of the craftsmen was limitless, and they did not hesitate to use pearls, precious enameling, and cameos in abundance. We can imagine how medieval ceremonials must have glowed and glittered with the breathtaking magnificence of these extravagant creations. CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Lightly read hardcover w/dustjacket. Book looks like it has been flipped through a few times. Perhaps at worst, read once, very lightly. Pages are pristine; clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, seemingly only lightly browsed(i.e. someone browsed through it a few times looking at pictures) However the front and back end papers(the first and last blank pages in the book) show very mild age tanning. Likewise the edges of the closed pages show very faint age tanning(visible only when the book is closed, not to individual pages, only to the mass of closed page edges) Gray cloth covers are clean, however the upper and lower open corners of the front cover show faint damp-staining- though there is NO evidence of damp damage anywhere else in the book) Dustacket is likewise very clean, but does evidence very edgewear, principally at the spine head which shows mild chipping. Vintage Waterford Traditional Anglo-Irish Style Vase
An excellent vintage Irish Waterford vase with a complex cutting. This vase is based on examples of Irish cut glass from the 18th and 19th centuries. There are ring cuts which divide the vase into three registers. The lowest is a band of horizontal diamond cuts. the middle has waffle cuts which are overlaid with very fine diamond cutting(a signature decorative motif on early Waterford crystal) The upper most register. Near the mouth consists of notch cuts which are found only on the most complex and expensive pieces of Waterford. In between the notches are fan cuts, another 19th century trademark. This vase is illustrated in a 1963 Waterford catalog in our possession. It is catalog number#207/524 and retailed in the mid-1960's for $9.67. The complexity of the cutting dates it to that era(as Waterford became more popular in the 1970's. ... moreThey simplified their cuttings as labor costs rose; as vase of this complexity would have only been produced as part of a specialty line since 1975) The vase is 7" tall 3.75" in diameter at the mouth and 2.75" at the foot. Condition: light wear to the bottom edge of the foot. Otherwise fine. Mark: Gothic script"Waterford" mark acid-etched into the bottom of the foot. Shipping weight is 3.0 lbs. THOMAS WILLIAM ROBERTSON (1829-1871) WAS A WELL KNOWN ANGLO-IRISH DRAMATIST#5544
Thomas William Robertson(9 January 1829- 3 February 1871) Usually known professionally as T. W. Robertson, was an Anglo-Irish dramatist and innovative stage director best known for a series of realistic or naturalistic plays produced in London in the 1860s that broke new ground and inspired playwrights such as W.S. Gilbert and George Bernard Shaw. Autograph Letter Signed, n.d. 4 1/2 x 7 ALS: written, in blk ink with lovely age-toning seen and a lightly two-fold crease overall, fine condition. T.W. Robertson was a British playwright whose realistic social comedies and pioneering work as a producer-director helped establish the late-19th-century revival of drama in England. Born into a theatrical family that played a provincial circuit based on the city of Lincoln. Robertson in 1848 moved to London to become an actor. In 1854 he was engaged ... moreas prompter at the Lyceum Theatre by Mme Vestris. An enterprising and important manager. It was her work in refining the staging of comedy that he was eventually to perfect. After his marriage in 1856. Robertson gradually abandoned acting for writing. Some of his adaptations and translations had already been produced, and in 1861 a one-act farce called The Cantab, his first original play, was staged. From 1865 to 1870 a number of plays produced by Marie and Squire Bancroft made Robertson famous: Society. Ours, Caste, Play, School, and The M.P. The broader themes suggested by the titles are merely touched upon, but the plays give a convincing picture of the social scene and are marred only by a strain of sentimentality. Many of his plays long remained in the repertory. And Caste was among those most frequently performed. Generally speaking. Robertson’s characters are recognizable as individuals, his plots are skillfully manipulated, and his characters; dialogue is easy and conversational. As a director. Robertson stressed the performance as a whole, insisting upon adequate rehearsal, attention to detail, and ensemble playing. The rigorous domestic realism of both his plays

The hallmark in the circle may be a Y. The crystal has a star cut in the base and flat cut edges. There ... moreare four punties cut in the corners. Condition: The silver seems fine and undamaged. It is now tarnished and would respond beautifully to polishing. It is not excessively tarnished and is not pitted. The crystal flat cut edges have some significant chips which I have tried to show in the photos. The basket is a nice antique piece. Which has been in an Irish family for some generations now, but unfortunately is no longer wanted by their kids. Shipping with tracking and insurance to the lower 48 states will be $30. The cut pattern on the compote consists of an eight(8) pointed scallop top rim that is beveled. The side of the bowl has eleven(11) flat flute/punty band, a hexagon shape stem with an air trap teardrop, and the foot is hexagon shape with the outer top edge of the rim being tapered. The bowl is made of a flint/lead crystal glass that has a nice bell tone ring when lightly tapped. The compote is made in two separate pieces. Bowl& stem, that were joined together by pressing them together when the glass was still hot. The dish has excellent clarity and pattern detail with the only visible defects being a few pin-head size chips on the top rim. A few tiny air bubbles ... morein the glass that is a manufacturing flaw, and the bottom of the foot exhibits age appropriate wear marks. It measures 6-7/8" tall. The top rim is 6-1/2" diameter from point to point, and the foot is 3-1/2" diameter from point to point. Antique Anglo-Irish Panel Cut Champagne Flutes Flint Glass
From a large collection of EAPG and flint glass. We have these wonderful stems. The collection was mostly of a single pattern, with some interesting additions and excursions. It had mostly been assembled between the 1950s and the 1970s. We have a set of Anglo-Irish flint glass flute champagnes The have a blade knop stem and have been panel-cut around the bottom half of the bowls. Polished pontil on the foot. Rims fire-polished. They date to between 1820-40. Size: They're 6.5" tall. 2.375" at the top and 2.75" in diameter at the foot. Condition: acceptable wear to the bottom of each foot(without the amount of wear. I would question them) some rice-grain shaped seed bubbles in the glass. Otherwise fine, no chips, nicks cracks or repairs. There some minor variations in height. Width and thickness but this also to be expected. ... moreShipping weight will be 1.5 lbs per glass.
