TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish The Secret of the Hittites: The ... moreDiscovery of an Ancient Empire by C. W. Ceram. Translated from the German by Richard and Clara Winston. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 279 pages. Publisher: Knopf; 1956) ISBN: 0880295937. The Secret of the Hittites" returns to the startling panorama of the author's first book. Gods, Graves, and Scholars" in the continued examination of the most ancient world known to man. Since the publication of C. W. Ceram's famous first work, a new discovery of enormous significance transformed the perception of ancient history. The darkest archaeological riddle of the Orient is on the verge of an ultimate and improbable resolution. And this with dramatic suddenness in the space of a few momentous years. The mysterious ruins discovered in central Turkey in 1834 were perplexing. Yet no one was willing to ascribe them to the Hittites, a people given scant acknowledgement in the Bible and dismissed as a minor Syrian tribe. It was not until 1880 that a hero of archaeology advanced the dynamic theory that there had once been a mighty Hittite Empire stretching from the Black Sea to Damascus. By 1910, only archaeologists and historians had begun to gain a faint and fragile knowledge of its lost history. Furthermore. Only in the years since 1946 has there been any hope of reading the fantastic Hittite hieroglyphic inscriptions, and only recently has anyone actually done so. Finally, almost twenty centuries after Christ, we know that twenty centuries before Christ the Indo-European Hittites descended into Asia Minor. We may now establish a third great empire beside the Babylon of Hammurabi and the Egypt of Ramses II read the first fragments of a profound unknown literature, of which Mr. Ceram provides stirring excerpts. The truth about Kadesh as one of the few battles that truly shaped world history is now known to us. The first great political treaty. Betwee

CLASSIFICATION: Earthenware Jar/Vase. ATTRIBUTION: In the Style of Ancient China. Zhou Dynasty. Spring and Autumn Period(770 to 476 B.C. Possibly an 18th or 19th Century Revival Imitative. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 140 millimeters(5 5/8 inches) at bowl; 94 millimeters(3 3/4 inches) at top lip. Height: 98 millimeters(3 7/8 inches) CONDITION: Very good. Complete and unrepaired. Little blemishes consistent with wear and then burial since ancient times. A few small rim chips, a couple of tiny hairline cracks. The typical blemishes of hand production(warts and dimples, zits and pits) DETAIL: A complete. Unrepaired medium sized impressed earthenware jar seemingly attributable to the middle of the first millennium B.C. The term“impressed” means that a design was impressed into the still wet vessel before it was fired. More often than not this involved rolling the vase over a fibre mat, or pressing a piece of mat into the vessel, impressing a design into the still-wet clay. It is a good-sized piece, the size of a small melon. What’s really remarkable is that despite its age, it is entirely complete. There is of course a collection of small rim chips, virtually obligatory with a ceramic vessel this old. And from those chips two very slight hairline cracks have evolved, as can be seen in the images here. However considering the age of the vessel, these are rather minor(and entirely customary and acceptable) blemishes. As well there is an assortment of tiny scuffs and abrasions which one would expect with an earthenware household utensil which was used and then buried. Considering that the typical such specimen is recovered shattered into shards, this specimen is truly in remarkable condition. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative

NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: In ancient India. Afghanistan, Arabia and Persia, it was believed that the subtle variations in the color of the stone could be read as indications of the health of the person wearing it, and it was widely believed to change color to expose a woman's infidelity. Throughout ancient Persian turquoise amulets were worn around the neck or around the wrist in the belief that the wearer would be protected from an unnatural death. As talismans, turquoise also adorned daggers, sabres and the bridles of horses. It was also believed by the ancient Persians that the gemstone would change color to warn the wearer of impending danger. The ancient Sumerians commonly carved turquoise into pendants and beads as far back as 5,000 B.C. Some of the most magnificent ancient jewelry ever unearthed by archaeologists was found in Queen Pu-abi's tomb at Ur in Sumeria dating from the 3rd millennium B.C. Here is a gorgeous gemstone quality turquoise oval of the most sought-after"robin blue" variety. From ancient Persian mines in modern-day Iran. This particular variety of turquoise is found only in this region of the Middle East, and these gemstones possess exceptionally vibrant blue tones. This particular gemstone was hand shaped and polished by an 18th century Russian artisans into this vibrantly hued oval for use in indigenous jewelry. Though Russian turquoise was and remains plentiful in Siberia, Persian turquoise was traditionally used in the most costly jewel

Betwee

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 191 pages. Publisher: Time-Life Books Inc. 1968) The“Great Ages of Man” series was released in the mid-1960’s. Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period(or“age” in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. Equally noteworthy are the photographic collections of artifacts and relics attributed to the specific age, really exceptional. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books)

ANCIENT LURISTAN BRONZE STANDARD FINIAL, 1st MILLENNIUM BC, WITH STAND, RARE
Luristan Bronze Standard Finial with Stand. Thick Patina with Earthen Residue Caspian Sea Area. Ca. 1st Millennium BC A cast bronze finial depicting a- Master of the Animals- from the epic of Gilgamesh, having an upper stylized central anthropomorphic figure holding back a feline in either arm, thus mastering them. A lower standing figure and a central bearded head flanked by two bird heads. 8.25" Tall(with stand 14.25 inches tall) description: A high quality finial or standard top. Cast in the form of a tube which is partly anthropomorphic and partly theriomorphic, and which has a creature on either side, not unlike the later Roman Janus-headed figures. The creature depicted has the stylized face of a human or- more likely- of a god, with an elongated nose, large ears and large round eyes; it is, as often, impossible to tell whether ... moreit is a male or female creature(see Moorey 1971, p. 153-154) On either side of the figure we see the gaping mouth of a predator or a demonic creature, the throat of which the figure is gripping with its hands. Additional animal heads can be seen on the torso and near the waist, and birds heads are projecting from the necks of the other creatures. The lower part of the body of the figure seems to be that of an animal, with crooked legs resting on what could be the stylized head of another animal. The whole object depicts a scene of long-standing significance in ancient Near Eastern art. A scene which has often be called(confusingly, see Moorey 1971, p.154) the"Master of the Animals" In ancient times such objects would have been joined to a standard. A pole or other support. In this case it is supported by a tapering bell-shaped stand, which may or may not be belonging. It is not known with certainty how such standards were used. But attention has been drawn to the fact that this type of object has only been found in graves, which may be significant. culture: Luristan dating: Circa 9th-7th century B.C. dimensions: Height 8.25" inches(with stand 14.25 inches tall) LI
