Vintage Cast Iron Doorstop Beautiful Colorful Flowers French Basket By Hubley For Your Antique Cast Iron Doorstop Collection Details Description: An antique cast iron doorstop cast in the form of a tall wicker basket having a braided handle with a bow on top. The basket is full of colorful flowers. The flowers are colored in red. Pink, gray, and blue. The entire piece still retains most of its original paint with minimum losses on the high points of the flowers. The gold colored basket has a black semispherical shaped base. It has a looped handle showing a braided branch design on top with a bow above it all. The back is colored in a gold color. Just a beautiful piece. See page 62 in John and Nancy Smith's book"The Doorstop Book: An Encyclopedia of Doorstop Collecting Published by Schiffer Books of Atglen, PA in 2006 for a similar ... moreexample. The piece is also shown in Jeanne Bertoia's Book"Doorstops: Identification& Values" Published by Collector Books of Paducah, KY in 1985 for a similar doorstop. Both references call the door stop French basket and give it dimensions of 11" and 6 3/4" and indicate the doorstop was made by Hubley. This particular doorstop is a bit smaller in dimensions measuring only 10 3/4" and 6 3/8" which could be an indication that this piece is a vintage reproduction. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of the description. Date: Uncertain but most likely early to mid 20th century. Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern. This is a nice antique cast iron doorstop(probably Hubley) The paint looks original and is in good condition. There are some chipped spots. All shown in the photos. It is comprised of two halves that are screwed together, so there is a very slight gap where the two sides meet in the middle. It is solid and sturdy and nothing is broken or missing. Vtg Cast Iron Hubley Boston Terrier Dog Right Facing Doorstop Nice Appearance
You're bidding on a nice vintage cast iron doorstop figural Boston Terrier- This is a known Hubley design. Although from what I can tell they were never marked so authenticating them can be difficult. The things he has going for him in terms of authenticity, to me, are that he is heavy- nearly 8 lbs- so no skimpage on metal, the two screws on the back are flatheads and not more modern screw types, and he does show paint overlap suggesting that he was airbrushed, although his collar looks as though it might be handpainted. He retains most of his paint, but does have some rust around the feet and some wear of the black paint along his sides that gives him a little bit of antique charm, in my opinion. Unfortunately, a flower was broken off in the upper left area. Hubley made many flower pot doorstops and this striped base is familiar. The flowers are cosmos and the piece is so known. The entire piece still retains most of its original paint. The gold colored basket is on a black round base. It has a looped handle on top. The flowers have yellow. Red, blue, cream coloring and green leaves. The back is colored in a gold color and has the number"182" impressed in it. Just a beautiful piece. See page 63 in John and Nancy Smith's book"The Doorstop Book: An Encyclopedia of Doorstop Collecting Published by Schiffer Books of Atglen, PA in 2006 for a similar example. Distinguishing Characteristics- Most Interesting About The Piece: This is definitely a nice antique doorstop. It weighs almost 3 3/4 pounds and has most of its paint. A beautiful piece which would display very well. Condition: This doorstop is in very good condition with no breaks or repairs. It does have some rust especially on the bottom of the base. It retains most of its paint(about 90% or more) with minimum losses. Which can be seen in the photos. Boston Terrier, Cast Iron Doorstop, Hubley? Vintage, Unique!
Yes there are over 200 Boston Terrier doorstops on eBay. But this one seems a bit different. First, I am no expert, just cleaning out a deceased relatives things. He is in the style of the famous Hubley terriers, perhaps he is a Hubley, but unlike all others on eBay, he has an open belly cavity, as shown in the photos. Two flathead screws with what appears to be original grout. Paint is chipped as one would expect for a vintage working doorstop, but his joints are super tight and he is a solid-feeling handsome fellow. Markings are realistic for the breed and he has a lovely expression. This has been in use in our family well before the 1950s, please give him a good home. This wonderful Hubley 1800's paper weight is in the shape of a resting cocker spaniel dog! He has a very RARE moveable head that can look from left to right.I was unable to find the Hubley signature but it has the Hubley look and feel. The screw is single slotted and there are 3 imprinted numbers underneath although I am unable to make out all of them- I think they are 129 or 8 or? The patina is mottled red and black- the predominate being red The condition is very good- there is a small hole on the bottom edge- see last picture. The eye color has been retained and is bright. This piece has what I would say is normal wear for a casually kept cast iron figure that is well over a hundred years old! Great detail on the coat- a true quality piece! The British manufactured large numbers of doorstops that were used to prop open heavy wooden doors to provide better room ventilation. This auction is for a Vintage Cast Iron Boston Terrier Statue/Doorstop. In excellent condition for it's age with no broken possibly some light chipping to the paint This was part of an estate sale. I am not an expert but do know these pieces are collectible. See the photos and please ask any questions prior to bidding.
