Wonderful figural piece of an Arab warrior on his rearing horse. Probably inspired by Lawrence of Arabia. This is a single bookend but serves beautifully ... moreas a stand-alone art object. Designed by listed artist Paul Herzel. His name formed into the top of the base. Bronze clad. A manufacturing technique whereby a skin of bronze was made to adhere to a plaster form through the process of electro-plating. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900's to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel and heft of solid bronze pieces yet still were affordable by the middle class. One of those companies was Pompeian Bronze. Operating in NYC in the 1920's. An original label still is affixed to the bottom. Condition is excellent in terms of structure: no breaks in the cladding. No mashed corners on the base, no delicate elements of the design bent or cracked. More often than not, this piece is found with some damage to the rifle- BUT NONE HERE: it is not bent; no cracking in the cladding where his hand grasps the rifle; no cracking in the cladding where the rifle butt rests on his thigh. Paint is original. Does show chipping and wear in places, but mostly intact. The piece sits flat and stable. This is big: 11 ⅛ inches tall to the tip of the rifle; base is 6 ¼ X 2 ⅞. And heavy at just shy of 3 ¾ pounds. US shipping only. USPS parcel post with insurance. I pack with care and do not profit from S&H. I SPECIALIZE IN ANTIQUE BOOKENDS AND DECORATIVE OBJECTS. Antique German shepherd dog art statue Pompeian Bronze, Paul Herzel, mint, huge
Absolutely stunning decorative statue of a standing male Shepherd. Alert as they always are. Details are incredible. No surprise when the artist is Paul Herzel, name clearly incised on the top of the base. Herzel did numerous figures of people but is more celebrated for his life-like depictions of animals, and German Shepherds seem to have been a favorite subject: there are at least two sets of bookends with Herzel shepherds, one with the dog standing as in my piece; the other, with the dog sitting down. The name Dolf also is incised in the top of the base- I don't know who that is. This was electro-formed(more commonly known as bronze-clad) A manufacturing technique whereby a skin of bronze(sometimes copper) was made to adhere to a plaster figure by the chemical process of electro-plating. In my last photo, you can see the indentations ... moreon the bottom, the"wicks" where metal loops were embedded, those loops used for suspending the piece in a vat of electro-plating solution. The hooks later would be cut off. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900's to produce decorative household objects which had the look, feel and heft of solid bronze pieces but still were affordable by the middle class. One of those companies was Pompeian Bronze of NYC. No maker's mark on this piece. But it was Pompeian who created the bookends mentioned above as well as many other Herzel designs(I have 5 or 6 sets of bookends signed Herzel, all made by Pompeian Bronze) Circa early 1920's. Condition is nearly perfect. No breaks in the cladding. No scratches, one ear(his left one) has a gentle nick/dent; a few tiny flea-bite nicks here and there; and one base corner gently pushed in(front right) Finish is original, shows some wear appropriate to age, but even that is minimal. And it is huge: 14 inches tall. To the tip of his ear; base is 11 1/2 inches X 4 inches. And heavy at 12 pounds. Perfect gift for the Herzel collector or the dog lover. I simply do not believe you EVER will encounter this piece ag

Elephant Patinated bronze... ARTIST SIGNED Paul Herzel
I Purchased the Nice Antique Pompeian Bronze at a Local Estate Sale and below is the Appraisal! Valuation report Valuation reference V519069-2 Guarantee line Paul Herzel(American. 1876- Description Elephant Inscribed with signature Patinated bronze. Date 20th century. Auction Value $400- $600 Insurance Value $1.000 Extra Notes A similarly sized patinated bronze of a bison came up for sale and made $600 against an estimate of $500-800 and I would estimate this work comparatively. Bronze is an alloy consisting primarily of copper. Usually with tin as the main additive. It is hard material. And it was so significant in antiquity that the Bronze Age was named after the metal. However. Historical pieces were often made interchangeably of brasses(copper and zinc) And bronzes with different compositions. So modern museum and scholarly descriptions ... moreof older objects increasingly use the more inclusive term"copper alloy" instead. The word bronze is borrowed the Latin word Bronzium. Bronze is generally harder than wrought iron. But as ironworking improved, iron became cheaper; and as cultures advanced from wrought iron(typically forged by hand- wrought- by blacksmiths) to machine forged iron. They learned how to make steel, which is stronger than bronze. In any case bronze is a preferred material from making sculpture. Arms, medals etc as also the outside patina can be manipulated and fine-tuned into a warm or striking surface finish depending on what effect wanted to be achieved by the artist.
