About the production of these miniatures The material of the object is brass. Achieving such a high level of detail requires a very complex and time intensive production process: At the beginning moulds of wax were created. Including drains for air and melted brass. All that was covered with clay. The mould was dried and fired. At the same time the wax melted and created a hollow space which was later filled with molten bronze. Fabulous antique Franz Bergmann bronze of an owl resting on the book. Book opens into a jewelry box. This piece dates to early 20th century. Owl has beautiful dirty gold patina. On top of the brown book and fabulous glass eyes. Bronze Size- Height 10.5in. Base is 6in long by 4.5in wide. It is heavy- around 4.3kg(9.5lbs) It is marked Geschutzt on the bottom of the book as shown in one of the photos. It means patented in Austrian- mark common to many Bergman bronzes. I sold an owl just like this one last year that had BERG written in same location as Geschutzt. The eyes appear to be onyx and are probably replacements since no adhesives available 100 years ago could have survived till now. The aged patina is lovely with very few abrasions. Fantastic large cold painted bronze“Owl on the Book” by Franz Bergmann. Dating to the first quarter of the 20 th century. Owl is standing on the book which opens to reveal small compartment. Bronze is large and heavy enough to be used as bookend or door stop. Bronze is marked BERG for Bergmann representing the foundry where cast. These owls were marked either BERG or with Geschutzt as can be seen in my other listing for gilt patina version of the same bronze. Bronze Dimensions: Length 6 inches Height 10. 5 inches Width 5 inches Bronze weighs over 6 lbs and is very heavy for its size. Condition: Bronze is in excellent condition for its age other than minor rusting showing on the two bolt heads mounting owl feet to the book cover. They are not visible unless book cover is opened. Large and heavy gilt bronze“Owl on the Book” by Franz Bergmann. Dating to the first quarter of the 20 th century. Owl is standing on the book which open to reveal small compartment. Bronze is large and heavy enough to be used as bookend or door stop. Bronze is marked Geschutzt which means patented in Austrian as many Bergmann bronzes were. This particular bronze does not have BERG mark as my other listing for cold painted version of the same bronze. Bronze Dimensions: Length 6 inches Height 10. 5 inches Width 5 inches Bronze weighs over 6 lbs and is very heavy for its size. Condition: Excellent condition for its age other than minor rusting showing on the two bolt heads mounting owl feet to the book cover. They are not visible unless book cover is opened. The object bears the golden"FBW" mark(Fritz Bermann Wien) The object is 42mm wide and 30mm tall. As these figurines are produced and painted by hand. Small variations in color or detail are possible. About the production of these miniatures The material of the object is brass. Achieving such a high level of detail requires a very complex and time intensive production process: At the beginning moulds of wax were created. Including drains for air and melted brass. All that was covered with clay. The mould was dried and fired. At the same time the wax melted and created a hollow space which was later filled with molten bronze. After casting and cooling the ceramic ... moremould was destroyed and the brass core removed. The drains were then taken off and the whole surface was engraved by hammer and punch followed by the very costly and detailed painting.
