Of the first printed appearance, for all the many revised Mitchell issues which will follow. Lovely map from Mitchell's"New General Atlas" Which early in 1860 replaced the"New Universal Atlas" The contents were completely revised for the 1860 atlas, all the maps newly conceived and printed. Engraved. Lithographed, bold and detailed full original hand color. A pleasing ... moreexample of mid-19th century Mitchell cartographic printing. Blending the highest levels of American engraving with large-scale commercial lithography and high volume detailed hand-coloring. The 1860 first edition went through at least 2 variant printings in the first year alone. And the maps were continually revised over the following 33 years, often several times annually. Individual maps from the somewhat rare 1860 first issue are quite a bit scarcer than virtually all other Mitchell atlas maps. These early first issue maps have a striking visual appearance which is noticably different from all which follow. As noted by Rumsey. The maps from this 1860 first issue can be distinguished by the lack of a page number outside the engraved border area. More significantly[and not noted by Rumsey] the decorative borders for this 1860 issue are unique, dark and richly printed, with a three-dimensional, almost mezzotint feel, which disappears on most maps after this first issue. The second issue of the 1860 atlas has different borders, less richly printed than these. Indeed, a comparison of this ornately and beautifully engraved border[which are only found on this 1860 first issue]

The only minor defects are a tiny hole at the center of two different folds. And some darkening/foxing in a few areas just from age. Antique Map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of the page is an impressive 18.5" x 16" The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the time of publication 157 years ago. This map includes primarily Washington and Oregon. Along with portions of Nebraska Territory. Portions of this area later comprised portions ... moreof Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the map is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. And the printing is sharp and clear. There are some very light shadows of printing from the advertisement that was on its opposite page at one time. Barely visible except in the areas with fewer physical features. The reverse side is blank. See the image for condition details. But frankly, the image really doesn't do it any justice. We are/will be offering many of these maps on eBay.
