Washington Oregon 1897 huge hand color antique map Washington and Oregon Issued 1897. Philadelphia by Bradley Fine original antique engraved map. Made approximately 115 years ago. With full original hand color. Printed in the late-19th century, on quality thick heavy paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. A very uncommon huge oversize map. Bradley's atlas was monumental in scale and very expensive when issued. Making their maps somewhat uncommon in the market today. Not to be confused with more common printed color maps of this era. A very nice map when seen in person. In VG or better condition. Minor trivial light age wear, perfect for framing[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing. A nice impression of an interesting ... moreand very detailed map. Sheet measures c. 26" H x 19" W. Printed area measures c. 22 1/2" H x 15 1/2" W. 16523] Any defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. Please look carefully and make your decision knowing this antique image is nice. But it is not in perfect"like new" condition. However, with whatever flaws it possesses, it remains entirely worthy of ownership and inclusion in any related collection. We feel it will prove very pleasing to its new owner. This map is from the book Our Western Empire or the New West Beyond the Mississippi by L.P. Brockett. A.M. M.D. At this time. Washington is still a territory to enter the Union in 1889. Each of the counties is shown in different colors. The county structure is vastly different in Washington and Oregon than from today. All topographical features are detailed, including the Great Plateau of the Columbia, the mountains, streams, rivers, islands, coastline, lakes and rapids. The few then existing railroads are shown and named- including the Northern Pacific and the Oregon and California Railroad. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of the page is an impressive 18.5" x 16" The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the time of publication 157 years ago. This map includes primarily Washington and Oregon. Along with portions of Nebraska Territory. Portions of this area later comprised portions ... moreof Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the map is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. And the printing is sharp and clear. There are some very light shadows of printing from the advertisement that was on its opposite page at one time. Barely visible except in the areas with fewer physical features. The reverse side is blank. See the image for condition details. But frankly, the image really doesn't do it any justice. We are/will be offering many of these maps on eBay. Hand colored, separately bound and issued, Folding Pocket Map measures approx. 23 3/4" by 17 3/4" and is titled in the cartouche simply“Washington/ 1894” There is also a Legend reading“Explanation. Washington. with the key explaining the different line types and colors on the map. The Map features exceptionally attractive, bright and vibrant, hand applied colors and both the Map and the paper covers are exceptionally well preserved.
