There are even several"ghost towns" on this map, no longer in existence today. Elevations and drainages are shown with hachures, as was the practice in 19th Century cartography. 1895 color map Roseburg Quadrangle. Oregon This is an original map titled: Roseburg Quadrangle. Oregon. Land Classification and Density of Standing Timber. This is a rather large 12 7/8 by 17 ½ inch sheet map showing data from 1894-95 and published by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1900. The scale of the map is 1:125.000, and the contour interval 100 feet. The map is about 12 7/8 by 17 ½ inches on a sheet about 15 ½ by 20 1/8 inches. Folded to about 7 ¼ by 11 inches. This map is Plate CXXVIII from the U.S. Geological Survey publication: Twenty-First Annual Report 1899-1900 Part V Forest Reserves- Maps. It was issued folded to fit the size of the Report volumes. It is a nice looking map that shows an area about 26 by 35 miles in size around Roseburg. The Umpqua River runs through the center of the map. Oakland is near the ... morenorth edge of the map and Myrtle Creek is on the south edge. Lookingglass is on the west edge and Tioga is on the east edge. Some of the names on the map are: Myrtle Creek. Ruckels, Dillard, Winston, Greens, Brockway, Lookingglass, Roseburg, Wardton, Melrose, Cleveland, Winchester, Oak Creek, Glide, Tioga, Peel, Wilbur, Coles Valley, Umpqua Ferry, Stephens, and Oakland. This is a topographic map with roads and towns which is overprinted with patterns that show timber resources and land classifications. There are four land classes in the legend: 1. Cultivated land; 2. Grazing land; 3. Woodland(not merchantable) and 4. Merchantable timber land. This large map would make a great display item. Its reference value is enormous as this is the first professional survey of these forest reserves. Which later became National Forests and shows the conditions as of 100 years ago. Up for sale is a nice color map of Washington and Oregon published circa 1895 in The People's Cyclopedia of Universal Knowledge. Published by Hunt& Eaton. Map measures 11 by 13 inches. This is a one page map. Overall map is in fair- condition. Map has light browning. Darker around the edges, Some small rips and tears at boarder area. None impact actual map. A few dark stains/ foxing. Other small dings here and there. Map will look nice framed. Map has been stored flat and will ship that way. This is a real head turner with neutral colors to complement almost any décor. It will get noticed. Single sheet. About 14" x 11" with margins. Map in the border of about 9.25" x 12.5" The other side has the Montana map also dated 1895. Tremendous topographic detail including Indian reservations including Crow and Northern Cheyenne. Flathead, Blackfeet, railroad routes with the operator, and the Rocky Mountains. Even Custer's Battle Ground is marked and dated June 15. 1876, just 19 years previous to this map's copyright. Overall fine. Typical margin toning. The Idaho side has a tiny speck halfway up the right side just ... moreabove Yellowstone(photo 5) No big deal. You'll have to look twice to see it. This is an original map from the 1897 VI edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica. IT is a wonderful colored lithograph print and the map is dated 1895. It is creased where it was folded in the book.
