William Renton purchased property here and started a lumber mill in 1863. Blakely Harbor proved to be an ideal site for a mill and it quickly increased production. Bringing more immigrants to the area. In 1879, Renton also persuaded the Hall Brothers to relocate their shipyard to Port Blakely. The mill suffered it's first fire in 1888.
