Offered for Auction: Rare set of 4 Old Hand Forged Iron Soldier Style Shutter Dogs. The dogs feature a large lag screw and a long cylindrical shaft and spade shaped tail with a hole in order to secure it to the house. The iron has been japanned with black enamel and repainted at some point over the years. However it has flaked and worn off due to weather exposure. I am uncertain if they can be reused, however they would make a nice template for new ones to be fabricated from. I am uncertain of their age or origin but they could have been forged here in New England. Condition: Fair to Poor given their age. All of the dogs have surface rust. They are scratched and discolored from use and age. They are misshapen and bent as shown. Designed to mount into the exterior house wall at the edge of the shutter, holding it in place by overlapping the edge, keeping the shutter flat and in place- they could be pivoted up so that a shutter could be secured closed- this was standard architectural hardware on most older homes. 12 (6 pair) old hammer in shutter dogs (square nailed as well)
Up for your bid are these 6 pair(total of 12) old shutter dogs. The house these came from was built before 1870. size: extend into exterior of house 2 1/4 inches. 3" high and about 1 1/4 from house to outer tip. Has hole for securing more tightly to exterior surface by using the hole at the bottom. These were attached by using hand cut nails. AM leaving the old paint. Probably many coats and some putty or caulking that had been applied around them over time. I did one form another window and in just a short time I was able on a simple grinding wheel to remove everything from the surface of one like these. Please fell free to ask questions.

These are very rare antique shutter dogs. I was told they were taken off a house in Germany and were 19th century. They do not look as though they have been restored in any way. The maker's mark is in on of the pictures and looks like"AB" I have not bee able to find information on the mark. When the shutter dogs are locked in place the dimensions are approximately 6.5" x 3" US sales only.

Antique Propeller Shutter Dogs Hold Back Window Restoration Home Improvement
You are bidding on 7 very old Iron Shutter dogs or Shutter Hold Backs. These came from my house, I'm not sure how old they are but the house was built in the late 1920's. There are many coats of paint on the but they still spin freely. 3 of the propellers wiggle a little which makes them appear to be at an angle. One of them is missing the nut under the bolt on the top and that one bends the most, but I believe it can be repaired. There is very little to no rust on them, just a lot of paint. I've had them in the house for the past 15 years. The square base is 2 inches square. The propeller portion is 5 3/4 inches long and when flush against a wall it stands just about 3 inches off the wall including the base to the top of the bolt. This is for the antique hardware pieces you see here. I have no idea whatsoever what these are. They look pretty cool. Though, IMO, and could, maybe, be used for many different things. They are about 6-1/2" long and all have the original massive 4-1/2" screws with flat heads and washers attached. They all have some remnants of white and/or red paint in varying degrees of thickness. They are lighter in weight than I would have expected them to be so I'm not certain of the metal; I would think they are not cast iron but more likely steel. These are true antique. 2 old Shutter dogs stays hold backs wrought iron fan tail Rolled End Dog 1800’s This set of 2 shutter dogs were hand made in the 1800's by a blacksmith. The shutter dogs have hammer marks and joints in the iron from the blacksmith. It is normal for small differences in size and shape because they were handmade. This set of shutter stays are rustic and would give an authentic historical look. They are the hammer in type that were in brick. Stone, or the wood siding on a house. These are not reproductions!
